View Full Version : Think I've just been stung by one of those mobile scams

I've just looked at my phone and noticed a missed call this afternoon. I though it was the ex-girlfriends mother as she phoned me on monday (the number stored from monday's call was almost identical) but when I phoned it all I got was a strange sounding "ringing" tone.
Is this one of those mobile scams - the call lasted about 3 seconds, so I'm not sure how much it'll cost if it is a scam number.
07030xxxxxx
Edit : A quick search on Yahoo shows that 07030 is a "personal number" which is charged at 30p/min on BT so that call shouldn't amount to much.
i got the same at 6.45pm tonight, 07030xxxx. didn't call it back as i was busy but normally would do. will do a google search later to check.
yep, it's a scam. phone call costs 50p/min to call back from your mobiel :(

if it is 0790****, phone call costs 50 pounds per minute.
i had a call - it was a recorded message saying I had won a prize and to press 0 to speak to an operator.
Now I know that I won't have won a prize - but what sort of scam is it?
Will i get charged anyting if i was to press 0 or can I use an Arnold Soundboard on them for my entertainment?

That must be rubbish. Offcom (or whatever the regularor is called) said that all UK numbers are regulated by them, and that their dearest number is £1.50/minute (they said this on Watchdog). They did however say they knew of a number which they weren't able to regulate which was £5 for the first minute then some afterwards - it was a London-based number.

We had an e-mail round at work about these numbers.
Some people actually believe that this is true and were 'warning' others :cuckoo:
It's another urban myth like the many gone before and no doubt the many to come in the future.

Ah, that was some porno based sex line, its still costs via Bt whatever a London call costs BUt they take your CC details and charge the rest to that. So you do know get caught unawares. I think on wtachdog is was some kid ringing it and charging his parents card (or phone bill) - perhaps they got him to ring another number, but it definately was not the case that you cna ring a london number and be charged a bomb without you doing something else or giving your cc number. Else all us londoners would be doing it!!
[Edit]
Well it seems everyone is fully aware of this and would never be caught by what I think is a very sly mobile/premium rate scam so I've removed the post to avoid people continuing to post "I'm far too smart and clever to be caught by this"...

I have nearly three hundred contact numbers stored on my phone and if I get a call from a number I don't recognise, I simply leave it to ring until the voicemail cuts in. If it's genuine, they can leave a message and I can call them back later.

Why call any number back ever? If it was that important, they would leave a message and/or try again

thought numbers were changing so all 07 numbers were mobiles and 09 numbers premium rated ones?
I can never understand people who call back numbers. What's the point? "Did you just call me?", "Yes but I decided against it and put the phone down", "What did you want?", "Nothing - that's why I put the phone down". Pointless. As is 1471 whatever it is.

BUT MR DARCY MAY HAVE CALLED
I've been getting calls from a 02920368705 which is apparently a con to try and get me to give contract details from my supposed mobile operator and try and trick me into a 12 month contract. Had 6 missed calls from them today, so waiting on them to ring back so I can record it and give them a piece of my mind

I never answer a number if I don't recognise it or it's withheld. As said before, if it's important they'll keep trying.
Just received a call on my house phone.
Guy on the other end said that my phione number has won a prize.(I didn't know my phone had entered a competition! :)
I'll be getting a new phone delivered tomorrow between 8am -11am.
Whats all that about?
Got to be a scam but i don't know how.

Same here. If they want me to answer it they shouldn't have their no. blocked.
