View Full Version : Help with Dixons please
Trying to help someone who bought a Kodak camera from Dixons :gag:
They bought it on Saturday I now realise it is 50 quid cheaper at amazon and at Dixons website (they paid £200).
Presumably they could say they don't like the colour etc and get a refund - but the packaging is damaged. How does this affect things?
I might try to negotiate some free memory for them - but I'm not very hopeful.
Any tips please?
Thanks.
Dixons do not have to refund because you have found it cheaper elsewhere, you will just have to see what they say but not be surprised if you are told to sling your hook.

Your only chance might be to take it back on a busy Saturday afternoon and claim its faulty. Having said that I got a Minidisc player for my wife from Dixons a while back, got it home and it wouldn't play discs recorded on my NetMD in LP2/4 mode. I took it back and Dixons refunded me no problem. I don't suppose you paid with a Barclaycard, don't they offer a price match deal ?
Happen to buy it on a barclaycard?
You could say it was an unwanted gift. Tends to work quite well.
Thanks for all the advice.
just want to clarify that I did not buy it at Dixons - it was someone else. I am not totally
They didn't use barclaycard either (even though they do have one)
Anyone know how the damaged packaging affects refunds? Presumably he could say it is not of merchantable quality (it is quite a bulky, plasticy kodak thing afterall)

Most retailers have a policy which say that the goods must be complete with all the packaging so they can resell it. Saying that it all depends on who you speak to on the day as some staff won't be bothered to argue.
In all honesty if I had tore open the packaging and used the item then I would say that it is tough titty if I saw it cheaper elsewhere (shouldn't be too hard with stuff from Dixons anyway)
lmao - phoned them up and they don't do refunds on goods that have already been used.
Didn't even mention the packaging.
Told them that is illegal but they don't care.

currys not accepting returns becasue goods aren't up to standard. i.e. i said it ws too plasticky, brittle and the screen was too dim for outside.
All well and good, but you already said in your first post that your friend wanted to return it as they have found it cheaper elsewhere. Your friend can either challenge it and ask to speak to a manager or learn a valuble lesson in our consumer economy to do their homework first and find the best deal for the item they want.
i didn't tell dixons it was cheaper elsewhere just that it was crap. Sorry for not making that clearer.
At least they didn't buy mastercare for 60 quid. :D
Dixons have a 14 day period to take good back if you dont like it, no lemon or something like that its called i noticed a small poster about a month back instore.

Go in to the store and kick up a fuss when they are busy, watch how fast they fall over themselves to help you.

I don't think they care because you sound like yet another in a long line of misinformed customers who try to quote laws that don't exist.
Unless you bought while protected by the Distance Selling regs, legally the shop does not have to give you a refund even if you turn around at the doorway and say that you have changed your mind.
Why should they give you a refund at all anyway? You are only doing it because you found it cheaper and then lied to them in order to get your own way. I bet you got the box out of the dustbin and scraped off all the baked beans and spag bol off it when you saw it cheaper. :D

That small poster will have even smaller small print which says something like "goods must be unused and complete with the packaging in original condition"...

Cant remember the exact wording but it definately implys you can try and if you dont like take back.
But if packaging is damaged i guess they can refuse.

You want to take it back with a vague hard to test fault. Something like it randomly powers down/cuts out. These sort of faults are hard to test instore and they'd have to dedicate a lot of time checking it.
Basically you go in saying "I'd like a refund on this it keeps cutting out at annoying times when I'm just about to take a photo". Then state "I had a search on the internet and someone else had the same problem with a similar kodak camera". I.e. build up a believable case. Then just as they lower their defences try a jab to the stomach followed by an elbow blow to the head and finish with a kick to the chest and then run out of the shop. Actually try it without the violence first it might work.

Try changing the date on the camera to a month ago then take some photos of your naked mate. Change the date back again and return it claiming that the camera has already been used and that you are now mentaly scarred due to the graphic images you found on the camera. :D

I'm sure Dixons have a price match policy. Dixons online store is effectively a normal store, and so they should either price match the web site, or give a refund.

Ah I get it...so you basically lie through your teeth and effectively try to defraud them? Cool!

This is Dixons man. How many people get shafted by them when genuine faults occur? Can't believe your sticking up for them.
Id have no quarms about doing whatever it takes to get refunded from them.

Same here, they regularly charge far more for products that can be found elsewhere online. Take the Canon A60 for example, £100 at Amazon yet £180 in store.

This is quite simple, if it is in the 14 days and they do want the camera...
Get the one that is £50 cheeper from where ever, then take that one back to Dixons, it will be sealled in it's original unused format, you get a full refund and Bob is your aunties live in lover.....

Dixons are scum. Shortly after the PS2 was released in this country (and it was quite hard to get hold of one,) Dixons had 25 just in. I went in to buy one (thought what the hell, looks interesting) and got to the checkout when I was stopped by the manager who said that she wouldn't let me buy the console on it's own.
She said I had to spend another £150 on games and accessories before I could have it (there were no notices about this anywhere.)
You can refund any item in Dixons within 14 days as long as it is in a saleable condition, i.e packaged back up as it was sold to you.
Dixons only pricematch local bricks and mortar stores and only if they have the product in stock. They will not pricematch online stores.
At the end of the day no one is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to shop there. If you don't like the prices don't go in then.
As for ramirez_uk, as your post points out it was very hard to get the PS2 so why shouldn't they make you buy things with it. As the machine was new what were you gonna do with it without any games.

Because the PS2 is backward compatible with the PS1, you do not have to spend money on loads of new games to use it. It also plays CD's. If Dixons did not have the PS2 bundled with other stuff, then what they did was treat consumers like scum.
