Just some pieces of information for the fans and the uninititated...
There is in Japan a recently released Boxset - VIXEN BOX, no less... - containing the following films:
- Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
- Vixen
- Supervixens
- Beneath the Valley of the Ultravixens
- Up!
- Good morning...and goodbye!
- Pandora's Peaks
and an extra Bonus disc (yummy set...:norty: )
While browsing through a german Forum I discovered that in May we'll be getting:
- Mondo Topless
- Motorpsycho
- Lorna
- Mudhoney
- Eve and the Handymen
and if this isn't enough for all you Meyer starved fiends, The Criterion Collection is preparing the release of (a hopefully Special Edition! of) Meyer's classic BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS!!!!
RUSS MEYER RULES!!!:notworthy

A very reserved: yay!
Hope the Criterion disc has trailers for all his other films on like they've done in the past. This is the only one I'll be getting for the moment. Never seen a Meyer film but read that Beyond... is the best place to start.

The Japanese set is overpriced for basically five features. Discs 6, 7 & 8 aren’t really worth the money and only discs 1-5 are Meyer classics. Transfers on the German editions thus far have been mediocre and AFAIK Criterion doing Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is still only wishful thinking.
The R1 releases are only average at best but represent a much better deal and, with the exception of Faster Pussycat..., comprise the key works. Other titles such as Mondo Topless are good as period curiosity pieces only. Shame that the commentaries from the old laserdiscs weren‘t ported over to the DVDs but that aside I would recommend the R1s at approx £15 apiece from DVDPacific

earl roberts,
it's funny you say that because that's exactly you're getting on the japanese boxset extras disc: a truckload of Meyer trailers! oh, and some featurettes and interviews as well...
jonathan e.,
apparently the Criterion is a go, because Roger Ebert has recently said he recorded a commentary for it. No date has been announced and I'm thinking we should not expect this any sooner than late 2004/early 2005.

It'a a shame Johnthan Ross 'Incredibly strange film show' episode on Russ Meyer isn't included, where Ross went and stayed with Russ for a while.

Beyond the valley of the dolls is a mental film. Cant believe Roger Ebert wrote this. The mind boggles.

Which contains one of my all time fave Movie Quotes:
JR: Wuss Meyer, a pleasure to meet you, let me say I'm a huge fan and begin by asking: Why are you obsessed with large bweasted women ?
RM: Well Jonathan, it makes the [insert the shorthand for "Richard" here] hard !
Wonderful !

Russ could ask the same question of Ross! Have you seen his wife?
Am I right in thinking that JR named his first kid Kitten, after Kitten Natividad, one of Russ Meyer`s pneumatic starlets?
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is the worst Russ Meyer I've seen. Rather odd choice by Criterion if you ask me. It's out on MGM's big deal label over here. I also have all 6 available French Meyer dvds, the quality is not so good but they are very cheap. Faster Pussycat and Motor Psycho are much, much, much better than all those Vixen films. If Criterion is releasing any Russ Meyer, it should be one of those 2.
