Okay, I'm definitely up for this.
Incidentally, if people want to make it the Friday after (and I haven't gone to check if the 29th May is next to another meet) my mates are running a night at the Verge (up the road from Camden Town tube, themed around the period the Pixies were big. This is what Sean had to say about it to me:
it'll be called Planet Of Sound, and it's basically devoted to the indie-rock scene between 1987 and 1992, i.e. the time the Pixies were originally around. So there'll be three bands playing live, plus DJs (including Lucy and I) playing the likes of the Pixies, Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, etc, etc.
As yet I couldn't for a moment vouch for the night's quality so judge on what's written there, not on my knowing people involved: I doubt the bands will be of any better or worse quality than an average night at the Dublin Castle, for example! The venue is a good one, but no nicer than any other...
When I find out more, I'll tell you...

That sounds like a good idea Theo. The other idea I had was to see what bands were playing at all the Camden music venues around the date of the meet and go and see an established up and coming band who are on tour.
Lot's of good bands like that only charge a fiver entrance fee for instance in places like the Camden Barfly. I'll check out the other venues to see who's playing but will not know until nearer the time as that's when the bands are announced and booked.
I'll add you to the list of people interested in going and will take your idea on board. :)
BTW, still haven't managed to get round to listening to the demos you pointed me in the direction of. I'll listen to them tonight.
yup. beer, music and london is always a good combo for me so i'll probably be there again if i'm free
like the idea of going to something people know, but so far all i've seen on the 22nd is the streets :|

Hi Shufty,
Great, I'll add you to the list of people interested in going. The Streets were the only thing I saw as well but not to worry there's still lots of gigs to be announced long before then.
If there's nothing good then we could do what we did the last time and go to The Dublin Castle or somewhere like that.
Stick me on the list, Jon. I'll be there this time :D

From what I've heard, Madonna hasn't sold many tickets due to the extortionate ticket prices she's charging (Only just getting into triple figures to be precise!)
I'll add you to the list. Thanks for your interest in coming along.

I should be able to make this one as long as its not the weekend of the 15th of May as I'll be in Scotland celebrating my birthday...

Hello
That's great. :)
I've updated the original post with updated gig details and put down 6PM as the time of the meet. Same kickoff time as the last meet.
Go check out what's on see if there's one you want to go to and we'll get an idea of the one that everyone wants to go to. If anyone else has gig info then post it and I'll update the thread.

I'll phone The Dublin Castle and see what's on there.
Have phoned and their posters only go up to 20th may. :brickwall
The person had no programmes to look up either. That's organisation for you.

Have updated the gig details. Have a look. :)
jmdomain
04-05-2004, 13:43
Have updated the pub details and links.
It's looking like a gig in Camden or for somewhere different, a gig at The Garage.
Still to find out what's on at The Dublin Castle.
What would people like to go to? Any opinions?
I'll have to give them a good look over this evening. :)
is anyone *actually* going to this?

oooohhhh!!! Hot of the phone to the dublin castle something's happening!
In non excited gibberish, I've just got off the phone speaking to someone from The Dublin Castle and something's happpening on 22nd May. Don't know what. Person was being all coy about who was playing. She wouldn't say as she wasn't allowed to tell me.
Tried sweetalkin' her but that didn't work. Offered her cash. That didn't work. Offered her brandy and that didn't work either so I don't know who is playing. :(
Well I'm going to put my hat on and call a few people and see if I can get a name or 2.
Hold onto your hair i'll be back with more info.
jmdomain
04-05-2004, 15:11
Columbo would be proud. :D
Here's the word on the grapevine as to who's playing:
Dublin Castle Gig Listings
WEDNESDAY 19TH MAY... nb these four dates are subject to unfolding events....
THURSDAY 20TH MAY... it may be that The Wurzels are playing...
FRIDAY 21ST MAY... or that some other crazy thing will be happening..
SATURDAY 22ND MAY... well, something like that
SATURDAY 22ND MAY... DANGERMEN
DANGERMEN.... what's all this then?? Can't tell ya mate...
So 4 nights have been reserved for 'Something'. I reckon we should book tickets now for the Sat 22nd May.
jmdomain
04-05-2004, 15:28
Just got off the phone from Bugbear bookings.
Managed to get some info from the person on the phone: it's a secret gig!
He wouldn't tell me either. He said it would definitely be worth it.
£10 a ticket though. Cripes!
Who's up for going to this? I think I was about 3 posts ago. :D
jmdomain
04-05-2004, 15:42
I've an idea as to who it might be. :D
It can't be them surely. Stranger things have happened.

So who is it?
Yeah, I'm flummoxed if I know. But if it's good then £10 ain't much. I know Blur did a secret gig there once...Really wish I could've been to that! :D
Supergrass are playing that night, do you think they'll be gettin back to their roots??
Certainly up fo the secret gig,
how do we get tickets?

Only thing I'll say is that it might be a warm up gig. ;)

Bugbear don't know when they're going to be selling tickets for the gig. Nearer the time probably. Guy on the phone who sounded like the big head honcho just said keep your ear to the ground.
He also asked me where did I hear about this? I didn't want to say I coaxed it out of his subordinate yesterday so I just said I put 2 and 2 together and guessed! :p

Okay I'd like to start getting confirmations from people who are definitely coming along to the meet.
It'll be £10 for The Dublin Castle that night. If things don't work out and we don't get tickets then that's fine we'll go to another gig venue in Camden.
I've now put the place of the meet down. Same place as last time seemed sensible: The Man In The Moon pub in Camden.
So then, can people confirm their attendance please. :)

Hmm. Well it seems a bit of a gamble. Given that we (a) don't yet know how we'll get tickets and (b) don't know if we'll all get them, I'll still say 'yes' I suppose.
The way I see it, any band that decides to have their warmup gig at the Dublin Castle can't be too bad, can it?
i'm still a maybe. until i know who it is, i'm not going to commit to spending a minimum of 30 quid on travel and a ticket. sorry

10-05-2004, 17:03
That's a shame shufty.
I've not actually got round to doing a backup plan in case:
a. I, or someone else finds out who the mystery band that is playing and find that they aren't a band we would want to go and see.
b. If everyone can't get a ticket in advance which might be the case.
c. I, or someone else recommends another band to go and see (Am just about to do this and it'll be cheap!)
Will now rustle up a backup plan.
jmdomain
10-05-2004, 17:52
I've now put details of an alternative gig. What do people think?
It's difficult to organise this meet due to not knowing who the band is playing at The Dublin Castle.
Won't know nearer the time who's playing and ticket details etc that's why i've updated the original post at the beginning of the thread with a backup gig but if people want to go to that one then we'll go to that one.
Now that I think about it is £10 too much? Should we switch to the alternative gig? It's cheap and good thing about The Garage is that there's a club on afterwards.
Your thoughts please. :)

I don't mind either way, Johnny. I can see why some might not fancy the £10 gig, especially as it might be naff (and is a long way for some to travel) but most of all I enjoyed the company last time and I expect that this will be just the same, a good laugh with some nice people and hopefully some decent music thrown in too.
sorry, should have explained. i have to travel back that evening so apart from the fact that i need to be out of there around 10:30 :| its going to cost me about 25 quid in parking, train and tube fares (might be a bit less since its off peak but i've no idea) before i even get to the ticket and drinks bit so just a case of bad timing i'm afraid.
much as i love you all, youre not worth 35 quid :D

Have emailed you At The Gates.
Ticket wise I have 2 reserved: one for me and one for KRW.
Lorne.t has 2 and 1 spare I imagine could go to darthballs or At The Gates.
I've updated the start of the thread with more details of the other gig that a few people are going to the next night (Sat 22nd May).
So if some people can't come along to see The Dangermen then they can go along the next night for the other gig which I've put details for.

I now know that darthballs can't make the second gig at The Garage.
TheoGB has said he can come along but will be confirming later on in the week for the second gig.
So for The Dangermen gig (Which is sold out) it looks like the people that are going are:
jmdomain
KRW
Lorne.t +1 (Maybe to darthballs or At The Gates?)
and for The Priscillas gig at the garage it's:

KRW
TheoGB
and anyone else who would like to come along.
Details are at the start of the thread. :)

Well The Dangermen aka Madness were superb tonight. Didn't have my camera as it was getting used elsewhere so no photos of the night. Was a good meet. Hit the spread eagle pub after a couple at the wetherspoons and then went off to The Dublin Castle.
Then lost Lorne.t. One minute he was there and then as if by magic 'gone' but found out what happened to him when I met him in the tube station! (He met Mr Bean!)
Top night all round, nice bunch of lads. And Madness were chuffin' fantastic. Most of their set was old ska covers in preperation for their covers album coming out this summer but quite a few old Madness classics were brought out to the fore. One step beyond was amazing. Place just went crazy! Including me! Seeing a band like Madness in a pub was superb!
Was moshing with darthballs and phil jupitus down at the front as you do and came out a few pounds lighter but was worth it as it really was a great gig.
Thanks for coming out lads and here's to tomorrow!

21-05-2004, 23:54
Quality meet Johnny and a major thank you (again) for organising this superb night and doing the legwork to find out that Madness were indeed playing a secret gig. :)
Also big thanks to Lorne.t for the ticket and his company and to KRW too, nice one.
Much bouncing up and down, and cramped moonstomping galore and Johnny and I even managed to blag some of Phil Jupitus's pint as he bounced around with us, top stuff
Lorne T what happened to you, one minute you were there and the next puff he was gone. Your not "Keyser Sose" are you? :suspect:
All together now, "madness, madness, they call it madness..."
Can I just finally say that I am cream crackered...

No probs darth. :)
Was a great night all round. Suggs giving out free tickets at The Spread Eagle was awfully nice of him. Top bloke.
Thanks to darthballs, lorne.t and KRW for coming along.
Without you guys there is no meet. So give youself a pat on the back. Am off to have a shower as I smell of skanky madness mosh pit stale punk sweat. :D
Okay, goodnight ska bless.
Thanks for arranging this it was a good night out.
As I said on the tube,I came back from the toilet and couldn't see anybody so I ended up in the second row at the left hand side.
It was a great disco before the band came on - The Clash,P.I.L and The Ruts especially.
I have to say I wasn't to impressed with the covers Madness played but I enjoyed the early singles they did.
I went to the bar in the venue for a drink and got chatting to some Irish lad and watched the rest of the gig from the bar.
I then chatted (talked rubbish!) for a couple of minutes to Sean Bean who was looking very grungey in a kurt Cobain cardie and baseball hat.
Decided to skip busking this morning as I feel a bit rough even though I need the money so it looks like a no show for this evening.
I wanted a long lie but was rudely awakened at 8am by neighbours blasting thumping techno out in their garden, probably in preperation for a barbie this evening. No sleep for me tonight then... :(
Twas an excellent night. Many thanks to Jon for sorting out the tickets. I missed jumping about at the front with Phil Jupitous cos I'm old and I might fall and break a hip or something.

Excuse the football news. :D
Tonight went well. KRW and TheoGB turned up (Thanks!)
At The Gates, no show. :( (Where were you?)
All met at The Famous Cock Tavern. Barman was playin the Franz Ferdinand album constantly (I like their music but not that much Mr Barman)
After me scaring a few folk with the line 'Are you At The Gates?' we conveniently left the building. :D
Upstairs at The Garage to see the bands was 'different'. Girls walking about in their knickers wearing tight tops, bikini tops and really not much else and that was just the support band Toxic Slut! Who I might add had a few decent numbers in their set coupled with a dominant stage presence courtesy of the sans many clothes frontwoman. Lovely jubbly!
And so to The Priscillas. Four sassy young girls playing nothing but 'Here you go, want some punk rock with a twist?' to which they played to what seemed like an already fervent fanbase. TheoGB has got some pics of the bands as I didn't have my camera with me.
They're definitely photogenic!
A terrific night all round and a great double header over the two nights. Just got to say thanks very much to KRW and TheoGB and everyone else for coming along and At The Gates, sorry we missed you but come along next time.
Cheers guys. :)
Hi.
I had a good night! :D
Here are the pics I took of the bands:

Enjoy!! :)
(Good to finally meet KRW, who I've seen around the forums often!)
Yeah, was nice to meet you Theo, hope you got home OK. We'll have to do it again some time. Great pics.
That Toxic Sluts CD we bought turned out to be very good, I thought. :D
The priscillas look pretty rough!
That last photo reminds me of a "Celebrity Stars in their eyes" rock special featuring the cast of Coronation street!!

Some cracking pics you took Theo. (How inebriated do The Priscillas look in one of them)

Looks like you had fun, sorry that I couldn't make this one I've been completely snowed under at home trying to sort various things out and find a job.
Apologies to Jmdomain for not returning your email, I was unfortunate enough to be hit by the bug in the original Half-Life which wipes your entire hard drive. I've only just got my PC back to stable usable state.

That's alright Blu3Flame, these things happen. Very annoying when they do. Maybe you can come to the next one.
Oh and TheoGB and KRW, the track I couldn't remember the name of last night was 'Lullaby'. Tis a very fine song.
TheoGB, I do believe you've won a prize.

Woah!!
What bug? I've installed that game countless times after wiping my HDD and nothing like that ever occurred!
Harsh, man. Glad to hear it's all sorted now.
Jonny: I got a text about 2am off my mate telling me it was Lullaby, actually! :D

Hmm. But great performers, though. They didn't come out so well on my pics. :(

In the very first version, its a bug in the sierra utilities application. The game wants to normally install to say
d:\games\sierra\hl
the uninstall would delete \hl and the parent directory \sierra, I went and installed the game in d:\hl for the sake of being quick and then decided I didn't want to play it so uninstalled without patching it. It went and removed d:\hl and the parent dir d:\

I still don't know what happened to At The Gates?
Someone must have scared him away, Jon. Maybe he's Rattail? ;)
