Which of these sfx makeup experts have done the best work?

Both excellent pre CGI old school frightmeisters.

I'd say Bottin, if only because I much prefer "The Howling" to "American Werewolf In London". This was a contentious issue for debate amongst slightly sad movie-crazed students back in 1981.

I also think Bottin's work on "The Thing" is quite extraordinary.

Can't choose between those two - in their time they have both pushed the boundaries of what was possible with make-up and animatronics. As has Stan Winston so he has to be included... unless this is just the first round of a battle to determine the all time SFX Supremo.

I would also add that Winston wins hands down... purely for having the sanest hair out of the three.

Mike, when you say you prefer The Howling to American Werewolf... are you talking about the films themselves or the special effects? If it's the SFX then I would have to disagree ;)

Bottin for me simply because of The Thing. His work in Robocop should also get a mention

Bottin because of The Thing, his work on that is outstanding.

I'd have to go for Baker over Bottin.

I much prefer the film generally. But I like the style of effects in The Howling better, even though technically they lack the panache of Baker's work on AW.

Rob Bottin - Not just because his makeup/puppets are better, but because he also is a superb conceptual artist. His Robocop, ED-209, Cain and Innerspace pod are design classics.

Bottin for me, his effects for The Thing are astounding and waaay ahead of their time :notworthy . In fact, I urge everyone who's interested in horror movie effects to watch the excellent 80 minute doco on The Thing R1/R2 DVD's as it gives you an indepth look at the making of the film and also has interviews with Bottin and he explains how he did all his SFX in the film.

Bottin for The Thing & for making a ultra cool guest cameo in The Fog.. Baker for Werewolf in London.. before he went Ape :)

Savini for what he has done for the horror genre as a whole in terms of slasher films (Burning & Maniac effects at the time were mind blowing).

Did Bottin do the sfx for 'Videodrome'?

I thought this had amazing sfx, really weird amazing imagery.

Baker did the Videodrome sfx.

Baker just edges it for me, although I can understand many people here choosing Bottin mainly for his work on The Thing - truly exceptional stuff.

What's Bottin up to these days? The last thing I remember seeing his name on was Mimic, but I'm sure he must have done more since then.

EDIT:

Can't have a thread like this without mention of the great Dick Smith :notworthy

Last thing Bottin did was Adam Sandler's remake of Mr. Deeds, why they needed Bottin's work on that movie I have no idea (not exactly an SFX driven movie was it :searchme: )

Agreed Dick Smith is the daddy IMO :notworthy

Baker for me, though Bottin is a genius as well. I can't believe Baker wasn't even nominated for an Oscar for his Planet Of the Apes work :oh-hum:

I prefer Bottin's work over Rick Baker, plus Bottin has put so much into his work that he has nearly been hospitalised before.
Stan Winston, I only thought of as 'third rate' before I saw his work in Aliens (and Pumpkinhead, an underrated film IMO).
Dick Smith is /was an inspriation for all the above and has produced some amazing work.

Sitting on a fence on this one, both are SPFX guru's in my view and both deserve all the credit they have earned.;)
