Just watched this Ace movie which is on the rhino label, after the initial speckly start it settles down to good quality, however as I had bought this to replace the crap full frame R2 I noticed a few differences.
After Jimmy meets up with Kevin (the biker) at the cafe the R1 cuts to the boys turning up for a party at the house omitting a 3 minute sequence where Jimmy goes to the tailors, meets Steph at the supermarket, pops some pills in his bedroom ,meets up with the lads in the bogs discussing Brighton followed by a meet in the pub afterwards where they talk about the party at the house.
Later on there is 2 more scenes cut just after Jimmys mum tells him to make sure he gets a line from the doctors the R2 cuts to a scene where Jim talks to his mate from the bill !! And a further scene at Jims workplace is also omitted.A total of about SIX minutes I make it

'Tis a pity. :(

Mind you, Franc Roddam doesn't really seem to have noticed on his commentary track. Was this a director's cut, like Picnic at Hanging Rock and Blood Simple where stuff was removed?

The missing scenes do very much sound like more of the same and not exactly integral to the plot, so perhaps they were trimmed for the new DVD restoration re-release to make the film much tighter?

Anyhow, the film flows just fine without them, and the excellent widescreen transfer, sound mix, and extensive extras make up for them.

It might have been nice to have seen them included as additional scenes, but Rhino's DVD version and cinema re-release in the US seems to have had Franc Roddam's approval, so who are we to complain?

Having watched this movie dozens of times i must say i never noticed the scenes were missing at all.
A lot of bad reviews about the quality of this release but its nice to see a positive reaction
Is it true that the original negative was found in a washing machine?
If this is the best this film is gonna look we should be thankful
you would think Townsend and roddam would have done a commentry would'nt that be somethin special.
The opening few mins are very very bad but this is down to the state of the film and it has not been cared for
Anyway looks sort 'Authentic' instead of 'dated'
great movie and good memories

I thought the disc was an all-round winner. As far as I know, there's only one review on the internet, over at DVD Angle, and that was very positive too!

I agree the dvd is a winner, people moaned about the speckles on the opening beach scene however I thought it added a bit of a dated feeling to the movie,at least it aint like vhs the more you watch the worse it gets !!!!!!!
ps
Did any other sad person notice during the riots when Jimmy shouts I was there he appears to be standing next to a set of traffic lights ?? Didnt think they were on the go in 1964 ???
