OK, i run down the runway pressing up, after I take off I press A, I then have wings, I try a combination of up and down and only about of 10 rounds do i twice ever get near a target. I just end up in the water. How do I stay up?

try to not touch the control stick at all until you get close to the targets, this way you keep up your speed.

you need to be checking the speed and wind direction and making really fine adjustments until you get close to the targets, and then when you are close, push down on the controller and hover onto the target. this gives you more control over where you land

so just free glide for a bit? if theres wind, should i be letting it take me, a few times i end up miles away from the targets with the wind

The longer you leave it after take off before opening your wings the more initial speed you will get

Make subtle movements if you need to move at all. Sharp up or down movements will lose you speed very quickly.

It's quite interesting watching new people play it when I have a SMB session. Some people get it straight away, but some just get more and more frustrated as theycan't get the hang of staying in the air.

i can always stay in the air, but i cant land.

i got the impression i had to drop onto the targets ie close the wings.

obviosuly not :D so i just have to glide smoothly onto targets ?

SMB is such a great game !! :D

No.. you have to close your wings to get the points, but you can do that mere millimeteres off the target itself.

Coolio - Don't hit A as soon as you take off, wait for you to drop a fair bit to gain some speed, then hit A and pull up slightly.

One thing I always do is adjust your position at the top of the ramp so that you're on the right or left side where there's a banana on the end - use one before a jump and it removes the wind, or store them for better powerups such as brake ball, sticky ball, etc.

Like others have said, small movements are best, I try to only do occasional taps up to maintain height, then when nearing a target I start pulling up a lot to scrub off speed, then close the ball when I'm pretty much stalling.

dont! it took up like 10 goes each b4 one of us realised we had wings. we just thought we had to somehow get more speed off the ramp and go like a ball thru the air

Have you ever landed on the tiny island target?

500 points for it!

the 500points for is the way forward, especially with x3 score. its easiest to do when the wind is against you, but still quite difficult.

the best tactic we have developed is to try and have a x3 for the pryamid level, and go for the 300, as it is quite easy to get. top score in our house is about 2600 for 10levels. seems quite good to us. i remember when i was showing off cos i got 800

i've got 2 mates who are too good at target 2

they get 5x score on every level, and land with such precision....

their top score is like 25,000 or something after 5 rounds. it's so competetive.

i cant even get close. :(

Coolio, it just takes a bit of gliding practice. With any game involving gliding, there are basically two things to remember:

1. You need height, obviously - since if you have zero height you are on the ground!
2. You need speed, since if you stopped moving, you'd fall out of the sky!

Unfortunately, pulling back to gain height loses you speed, and pushing forwards to gain speed loses you height! So you have to find a balance between the two. If you start to slow down, dive down a bit to pick up some speed, then pull back a bit to regain the height you lost etc etc.

Monkey Target 2 is really good, never really liked the first Monkey target.

My tactic is to wait till I'm near the target and start to stall so that I lose height and speed then land softly on the target, get the 1000 each time :)

(i play with out the items, makes it more fun)

Target 1 is harder, bt ultimately more satisfying - 2,720 is my highest score (and I got over 12,000 on my first go on SMB target 2):|

The trick to landing is to land into the wind, pulling back on the stick to keep the target just above your wings until you are really close, and then close your wings to land gently.

On takeoff look at the speed - try to get around 200mph before opening your wings and you should be able to get to most places unless the wind is really strong (15mph+).

The trick to high scores on SMB 1 is to get the bananas - I can usually get 5 on each flght, which means x3 score on each landing.

I've got an urge to play Pilotwings 64 again now :)
