Just watced this on TV and its got me thinking, does anyone know how many horses actually die in this race? It seems terribly hard on the horses and the fences are pretty high. I saw about 8 fall includng hedge hunter who was leading all the way up to the last fence when he fell. After he fell he didnt get up, and i just wondered what happens to them?

every year i watch it and wonder what happens to all the horses that fall.

thanks

It depends how badly they're injured. If they break a leg or something then a trip to the glue factory is usually in order.

If you see some screens brought onto the course then it's usually bad news.

i thought if they broke their leg, they were no good for racing anymore and were usually shot?

If the bring a screen on the course, do they put the horse down there and then? how do they do it?

Yep thats where it is done, im not too sure on how it is done, but i would of thought a shot to the head :|

If you want to know how many die, it will usually tell you on teletext on ch 4 or the beeb.

2 died, one at the first and one at the last. Hedgehunter was ok though, he's walking now.

What an exciting finish to the race!

My horse in the office sweepstake fell halfway though, but I had some money each-way on Monty's Pass :) Marvelous finish by Amberleigh House though

well done amberleigh house, my money was on clan royal and monty's pass (each way, thankfully!) so I've made a tidy sum and will be treating the o/h to a nice meal out and the flicks tonight. :D Felt a little bit sorry for the backers of hedgehunter since he was leading virtually the whole way, but hey, c'est la vie! Glad he's ok.

None of the horses in this years race died, they are all fine and so are the jockeys although one has been taken to hospital with a suspected broken wrist. I used to think the Grand National was a cruel race but over the last few years I have changed my mind, the fences although high are unlike those for the Gold Cup being pretty soft as evidenced by a lot of them ending up on the floor as the horses jumped them.

Just won £70 after betting £5 on Amberleigh to win.
Mate at work is over-joyed. He accidently bet a stake of £20 online because he didn't realise £10 each-way is £20. Best mistake he ever made. :notworthy:

can someone help me.

I placed £1.64 each way on Amberleigh at odds of 14/1

i worked out that i should have won around £54 but i only won about half of this.

Can someone explain this to me?

The reason a each way bet is double your stake is because, £1.64 is on the win, the other £1.64 goes on a place, so it is worked out like this

£1.64 @ 14/1 pays £24-60

£1.64 @ 1/5 of the odds on the place of 14/1 could be either 2/1 or 3/1 =£4.92 or £6.56

So you will get back either £29.52 or £31.16 neither arent a bad return on a stake of £3.28, now if you had put it on win it would of returned £49.20

Well thats the way i see it

Thought they paid out on each way if they finished 5th in the National

They only ever pay for the first 4 places. However, A couple of bookies were also paying out for 5th this year (Paddy power and Victor Chandler), but this is not the norm.

thanks that explains it.. I know it's stupid but i was convinced that i had won around £55. now it feels like i am £20 down. Stupid logic but I'm sure when i colelct my winnings i'll forget all about it
