View Full Version : Best Horror DVD for Halloween ?
I'm after two DVD's for Halloween at least one needs to be suitable for a 12 year old. So what is the best horror out at the mo - if it is a bit uncommon a link to somewhere to get it from would be damn handy too.
Cheers.
Russ.

I'd say "Halloween" ;). I must have seen it about that age, but it's going to depend how sensitive the kid is. If you want to stick to BBFC ages limits, then I'm afraid it's an 18, but if only one has to be limited to 12 and the other is open to any age, get it.
Don't have any links, but possibly R1 is best at the moment? Not sure, but the version I got is damn good (Anchor Bay I think? - has a hologram sort of cover on it).
deadkenny is right halloween is the greatest horror of all time. i first saw the movie when i was just 11 years old so i would say it's fine for a 12 year old to watch, and don't forget that in america it's a R which means young children can watch it as long as the're with an adult.

I saw Halloween when I was about 10 and it scared the living daylights out of me. :D
The creepy old Myers house, and especially these bits:
Where Michael dissapears behind that hedge, and when he's in amongst the washing line.
When that kid runs into him outside the school.
Near the end when the kid keeps looking across the road and sees Michael on the porch etc etc.
Not to mention the best horror music score......ever.
Maybe kids these days won't find it scary, I dunno.
Although I love Halloween, I prefer A Nightmare On Elm Street.
As for the choice for a 12 year old, I don't think there's many "horror" films out there classified 12, I'd go for a mild 15, maybe The Sixth Sense?

The Evil Dead.
Scared the ***** out of me when I was a lad.
Yeah I know...
Cannibal Holocaust is kid friendly - lots of cute animals in it too.
Pork Chop Express

Poltergeist freaked me out when I was younger. Part 2 does as well, esp Rev Kane the guy who played him was wicked in that role.
My favourite Halloween horrors:
Sisters
Suspiria
Halloween
Let Sleeping Corpses Lie
Dusk Til Dawn or Fright Night
Wish that 'Night of the Demon' was available on DVD (also known as 'Curse of the Demon'). Always my fave Halloween flick.
It's in the trees!

If you're alone:
1) Black Christmas
2) Halloween
3) The Exorcist
4) The Blair Witch Project
If not try:
1) The Evil Dead - for a laugh and a scare
2) Suspiria - for a laugh at it's crapness:D
3) The Haunting - because you simply can't watch alone.
Or:
Just watch 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' - :p

I'd go for the Exorcist - but in no way suitable for a 12 year old.
(cue several "I saw the Exorcist when I was seven and its rubbish" posts)
Still for me the scariest film ever, bar none, (and I'm an aethesist).

Totally agree.
And for the 12 year old - you can't beat - 'Hocus Pocus'

Oh I didn't see that, I'd take the Exorcist out of my list, definately not suitable for a 12 year old.
I admit to it... I'm 13. My fave horror film is:
Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman...
*Tear* *riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiip* *splash*
...
But Candyman isn't suitable for someone my age - hence my mental state...:) ... and the DVD's crap.
The Exorcist is good but depending on how seriously your 12 year old takes it they'll:
a) Laugh
b) Sleep (out of boredom)
c) Stay up all night shaking
or d) Throw up pea soup everywhere
12 friendlies:
The Frighteners (ignore the 15 cert. it's a family film) and
The Sixth Sense
Hope that helps...

For a 12 year old I would say
Evil Dead 2 or The Monster Squad ....The lost boys maybe
I know those above are a wee bit wimpy but its always best to be on the safe side
I have a little Brother and I know theres nothing worse than being woke up in the middle of the night .
:D
How about Spy Hard - truely scary - scary that it was ever made!
Seriously though, Scream 1 or 2 - quality scary movies, unforunately Scream 3 fits into the Spy Hard series of scary movies! Another contender is What Lies Beneath which is quite a suspensful movie to watch.
What about the 'Freighteners', with Michael J Fox. It has ghosts in it. Although it's pretty funny in places too. Fits in with the Halloween theme. And I think it's rated '12'.

The Thing. Scary atmosphere and a lot of very impressive latex FX. It's gory, but it's not at all sadistic, so a 12 year old will probably love it. R1 is best.

Have to agree with
Candy man
and
The Frighteners ( how could I forget it!?)
Great movies:cool:

My faves for halloween...
Halloween, Suspiria, Evil Dead 2, Dawn of the Dead, The Haunting (Robert Wise version)
but I wouldn't show them to a 12 year old.
Try:
The Frighteners
Arachnaphobia
Encounters of the Spooky Kind (subtitle alert!)
Mr Vampire (ditto on the subs)
Mr Perfect

Definately go for Killer Klowns From Outer Space if you're multi-region, featuring the greatest use of pies ever:D :D
i don't think anyone's mentioned Ginger Snaps yet.. that is an excellent film :)
You could try these
Halloween
Evil Dead
Candy Man
or if you fancy a laugh as well
Amercian Werewolf In London
The Lost boys
Perhaps not really suitable for a 12 year old
Horror for a 12 year old, not so easy
Hocus Pocus
The Thing (not so scary these days)

Yeah, thanks to BBFC cuts... boo :(
Actually it's a 15 according to the BBFC database, still I'd say it's harmless enough for a 12 year old. I'd say the same about The Exorcist - it's only the language which might concern some parents though, not so much the 'horror' element.
I saw The Omen when I was about 9. Was quite scary at the time.
Don't Look Now? That might be a bit too much.
My favourite would be The Shining though, but none of these have any 'Halloweeen' plot to them.

On the subject of Halloween (the film that is), I spotted a R2 in HMV with the same Hollogram-ish cover that the R1 has got and has the same Widescreen + Full screen versions. Not sure if the extras are the same, but if PAL is your thing... (P.S. It's also Anchor Bay).

how many holograms went out ?
i have not seen a single copy without the hologram
Thanks for all the suggestions folks! It seems as though most people like Halloween and The Exorcist. Unfortunately we all know these backwards. I've not heard of Suspiria though so I'll check that out. I'd also forgotten about American Werewolf in London, what a cool film, I'll have to get that for the 12 yr old. Then when they've cleared off to bed I've already got Day of the Dead, which is pretty poor but has good teenage memories attached to its goryness.
