Silly question really, Im in the proccess of upgrading my HC, and was thinking about getting a 7.1 reciever - so later on i can upgrade to 7.1 without having to buy a new one. But since my current room is small i think 7.1 might be abit overpowering for the size, so id stick with 5.1 for now.

If i got a 7.1 reciever, does it have to ouput to 8 sources .. or is it alright just throwing out 5.1 ... ie the sound doesnt get EDITED up.

These amps are backwards-compatible, so yes you will still be able to output DD 5.1 or dts 5.1.

You'll just have to go through the amp's setup routine telling it how many speakers are connected to it and their sizes etc.

As soon as you get extra speakers etc. and you've re-set it up again, the amp will automatically output to the extra ones if the material is encoded with 7.1 flags...
