View Full Version : Speaker cabling query (Justin?)

If I were to order the Tannoy MXAV4 Home Cinema speaker package from Homecinemaheaven, what leads would I need to purchase aswell?
I can't afford to buy the Speaker set and the Amp in the same month, so I was going to buy the speakers first, which I can at least wire up through the Toshibas built-in DD 5.1 Decoder
Do I just need Standard phono cables, or something better? And if so how much will that all set me back?

Well I'd buy that a month later, but surely I can just wire them upto the Toshiba speaker outputs on the TV in the meantime?

...when you said Toshiba 5.1 dd outputs, I thought you meant a Tosh DVD player.
:)

Hehe, no. I may be new too all this Amp malarky, but I'm not THAT dumb ;)
I've got a 28" Widescreen Toshiba tv with built in DD 5.1 decoding (I forget the model number)
I think it's got outputs for 5 external speakers (but not a Seperate Sub), but the Tannoy set only contains the 5 speakers anyway.

If it's got regular spring-clip jacks, then it will take regular speaker wire. I doubt the TV would have enough grunt to do the speakers justice though.

Heh, no it wouldn't, it's 65W RMS
But it's better than them sitting there doing nothing.
Do Tannoys have standard spring jacks for phono leads then? If so that makes life simple.

Not phono leads.
Standard speaker jacks, that take either banana plugs or bare speaker wire.

Sorry, that WAS me being dumb, I mean normal speaker wire.
But errm, what are Bannana plugs?

We usually chuck in some speaker cable FOC on packs to get you started:)
Erm, not sure what you mean by wiring to the toshibas onboard decoder, are you refering to a DVD player or a TV? DVD players no chance, TV you probably coulddo it, but the amp onboard would not be up to the job of powering the tannoys anyway! So you would probably be better saving and getting them both together, or having said that, the site should go live this weekend with instant no deposit credit on anything over £200.

Regardless of the actual quoted TV output, it would damge the speakers if you try to drive them on the TV amp.
You really do need a decent AV amp, otherwise, you might as well just buy some basic AV surround speakers. Putting "proper" hifi speakers ont he TV is just going to pop the amp or damage the crossovers in the speakers:(
