View Full Version : Where have all the TiVo's Gone?
Considering how Sky are pushind Sky+, and Tivo is the same thing, you cant buy a Tivo from anywhere.
Why did they dissapear from UK sales?
They are doing very well in the states I hear.
Tivo have not been on sale on a retail basis in the UK for a couple of years now.
Seems it just wasn't marketed properly and Tivo eventually lost interest :(
Subs management continues to be carried out by Sky :|
If you want one you will find them on Ebay in both original or more often modded [with extra/larger hard drives] basis. Some also will have the 'lifetime' sub.
The question is ... will there be a 'lifetime'? I have modded my own with a 120Gb hard drive [standard is just 40Mb] and pay my sub [£10] on a monthly basis.

That is the worry isn't it..how long will "lifetime" actually be for Tivo in the UK? I do hope they reconsider the UK market once more. Is a great service.

Thats the same question I asked myself when I got my Tivo 16 months ago. I paid the lifetime sub, a few more months now and the sub will start paying for itself. I thought that Tivo were committed to keeping the service going in the UK for paid up subscribers.

i probably got mine around the same time - oct 02, from a dixons 99pound offer. And i got a new one 6 months ago when i managed to break the modem (by prodding it i think when showing my dad the insides :suspect: ).
I assume the lifetime sub will be lifetime, the data is provided by Tribune i think, who provide data for loads of people, so thats solid. I think tivo might bring out another unit in the UK, the tivocommunity forums have more details.

There have been rumours about this for seemingly ages now ... but still nothing definate :oh-hum:
As I understand it the 'new' Tivo 2 available in the States for some time now is miles ahead in the technology stakes compared to our UK models. :brickwall
http://www.tivo.com/1.1.1.asp Even worse, it sells for just over £80!!
Wishful thinking, but I'll believe it when I see it, for Tivo to re-enter the UK market - especially as Sky+ continues to increase it's stranglehold here :|
We seem to be second class when it comes to technology
Compare that price on that Tivo 2, to the prices on these at Tivoland (http://www.floridavilla.com/tivoland/index.html).

Just a thought, but is the EU not bringing in to force a directive which stipulates that encryption methods for comercial TV must be made available ot others? In effect, they are aiming for other companies to be able to manufacture the equipment to enable competition since Sky just now have a stranglehold on their encryption system. If this is the case, and I am not mad, then Tivo would be able to release a system that would work the same way as Sky+ does, and the Tivo box would either come ready, or the buyer would simply cave to buy a cam and use their existing sub or get a new one.
I will have to go and dig to find where I read this, but I am sure it is in the pipeline. No idea how long an EU pipleline is though!!!!

Very, very long indeed, and they are also very prone to being "got at" by big business.
And since Murdoch is currently best pals with Blair, don't be surprised if the British government put a spanner in the works.
