I watched The Phantom Menace for the 1st time last night and I cannot believe one character could ruin a film so comprehensively.
I thought the opinions on *** *** ***** might have been exaggerated, but no, he's every bit the 'c' word people said he was, and no-one warned me that there's a whole planet of the damn things.  :D. I don't know whats more annoying, his voice or his 'hilarious' slapstick comedy moments.
Overall the film was better than I thought it would be, stand out moments being the pod race and the Darth/Jedi fight. But *** *** ***** was more irritating than I ever thought possible.
Why didn't someone tell Lucas to scrap *** *** **** during production , I refuse to believe that there's one other person in the world that thinks he's a good character.

Ah come on, he's just a fun little charactzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I was called "evil" on another forum (r2-dvd) for daring to suggest that he is anything else than another nugget of gold from the great bearded Luca$ god.
And apparently we haven't seen the last of him...........

I didn't think he was too bad.
Natalie Portman nearly makes up for most of the mistakes anyway. :)

Yeah, and did you notice how unhappy and grumpy she was all throughout the film. She should play a hitwoman in The Professional 2019: Attack on the Clones

i dont agree. I thought NAtalie portman was just wooden and un interested - like she's wondered onto the stage and was reading off a cue card. I really couldn't see what lucus found so amazing about her past performances... Every line she spouts is COMPLETELY without emotion or feeling - and the worst thing is, you know she's trying quite the opppsite.
Onto Jar Jar - agreed here. The Jamaican fish character. Absolutely awful. It was his annoying "jamaican" accent (let's be honest that's what it was).. i think lucus has momments of insanity sometimes...
BUT the character who REALLY annoys me is the all-american rosey cheeked kid.. JAke Loyd as Anakin - what the hell was lucas thinking? has anyone seen the 1 hour DVD documentary on the TPM? Jake Loyd comes across as a brat who keeps forgetting his lines.. the parents and the production team were busy going "awwwww, how cute" to see how bad it really was. Lucas said it himself that Jake loyd needs loads of takes to get it romotely decent. Of course i know he's only a kid, but anakin was just bland. The momments with him & his mother in the film remindind me of a cheap and badly acted american soap drama... YUK.
lucas, get your ********* act together, sunshine!!!! DOnt's let the Star Wars Prequels turn into complete crud for the remaining 2 films!!! let's get back to what we know and love.. let's get over to the DARK side and get there quickly.. I wanna se the downfall of Anakin early on in the second. I want a sinister trilogy (or whats left of it).. UNF**KING likely, i know.
rant over...

Jar Jar makes 5 year old children laugh. This is why he is in the film. The sad thing about The Phantom Menace is that it is a CHILDRENS film, meaning only children can enjoy it fully. A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back could be enjoyed equally by all age groups. But here we have most of the slapstick humour aimed at 5 year olds, and anyone over the age of 5 will have developed enough intelligence to see Jar Jar for what he is: a cross between Jamie Oliver, Jeremy Beadle and Chris Tucker.

I wasn't really talking about her acting ability, she's just fantastic eye candy......, well, at least when she's not in her royal gear. :D

No Natalie Portman was playing the queen monotonously and without moving her head or making any face expressions because that's what the character required, she was articulate however when she went with them to the city as one of the helpers.

I love the Phantom Menace, it's great.
And Jar Jar Binks is funny.
Without him it would be too serious a film.
He make me laugh :)

Oh Please..........
How on earth can you single out Natalie Portman for being to wooden & uninterested in a film like TPM ?.
I mean, there's not alot of soul searching required by any of the characters.
Idle Child

i didnt ask for a soul searcher. I asked for a GOOD actress.
PS. i've hardly singled out Nat portman if i've also complained about: Lucas, Jar Jar & Jake Lloyd. Infact, while we're at it, McGregor wasn't much cop either.

Surely its the same thing.
You got a good actress, its not her fault (or any cast members fault) that the parts required no great amount of emotional imput.

So it wasnt you that said -

Your only targeting Portman.
You go on to have a dig at Anakin, but thats for being a little gobsh1te, not shoddy acting.
All of the acting in TPM is basic, simply because the film didnt require anything more.
Mcgregor,Nieson,Portman have already proved their capable of more demanding roles in other projects.

Sit down and watch the film with a bunch of 4 to 7 year olds and everything will become clear.

I thought that Phantom Menace fitted in quite well with the like of Return Of The Jedi and A New Hope, but wasn't a patch on Empire. Probably because Empire was the only one with any character depth.
Things that I would like to change in Phantom Menace:
Jake Lloyd - Out of the three kids that Lucas had left, Lloyd came across as the most wooden in the documentary. I would definately have chosen either of the other two. Also his very wooden hellos and goodbyes (and any other role that needed compassion). For example when he says his farewells to the woman on the market stall, that he has known all his life, he doesn't even look at her. He mumbles and walks off screen. It was basically the same when he left his own mother.
Also the very annoying Yippee's and Whoopee's that Mr Lucas no doubt made him say.
Jar Jar Binks - I don't detest this character as much as most of you, I just don't understand why the silly slapstick was needed. Examples are: When at the dinner table. Neeson's Jedi catches Jar Jar's tongue and the lets it go, Jar Jar then very sillyly (?)shakes his head. Another is when Jar Jar is leading the way to the underwater kingdom, he tells the Jedi to follow him, he then does some stupid slapstick spin and then goes in the right direction.
These little touches ruin what otherwise would have been a half decent character.
I thought Jar Jar was quite amusing on occasion IMO
I`ve heard that Howard the Duck is making a cameo in the second one.
I didn't particularly like Jar Jar. But not for the reasons most people don't like him.
I think the fact that he was CG does the character no favours. He is too 'wooden' and badly animated.
Now, if he was a bloke dressed up in a furry suit, you could see the humour; but a ray traced thing?
The only film that I think has managed to get away with CG characters is Toy Story. The only reason they get away with the CG is that they are toys, and your mind doesn't try and make them too human. They are meant to be a little different.
But then again, maybe that's what Lucas wanted out of Jar Jar. An instant marketing opportunity for a crappy toy.
