Has anyone compared these 2 version and can tell me which one is the better?

Presuming you mean the R2 UK version and the R1 then although i've not personally seen the R2 there is a thread here (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26822&highlight=mononoke) that confirms there are no literal subtitles....if this doesn't bother you then I guess the R2 is the best choice...

also look to this excellent site (http://website.lineone.net/~lawrencium/ukmon.html) for a look at the R2 in comparison to the R1 (Beware a little language though, like many others the writer is none too happy regarding the subtitles!)

not quite sure in what context that question was in but yes, the R1 has literal subs (as literal as we're gonna get anyway, the R1 actually has both sets of subtitles), the R2 UK does not.

its just an amazing screwup on the account of Buena Vista.

The R1 is pretty much perfect in respects to film presentation....from the Menu you either choose English version with optional English Subtitles (in this case you'll be presented with the dubtitle track so it matches the English dub) or the Japanese Version with Literal English Subtitles....on the R2 it seems as though they included a hard of hearing subtitle set instead of the literal subtitles!

should i take it back and get the R1 ? i havent watched it yet, dont know how good the dubtitles are.

thats your choice really. I'd say yes, as unless i'm watching with family/friends I always choose the Original Language track and unless a dubtitle is the only option (like with the R2 releases - but then we have the joy of scripts!) literal subs are a must. If you watch Japanese films regularly you'll notice differences, most obvious is text onscreen when no-one is speaking!

:D I should hope so :D especially that comparison link I gave you, he would never miss something like that!

oh yeah - where did you get your English script for Mononoke (from other thread) - if it was Scriptclub then that won't synch with the film as its timed for NTSC - and timing is a biiiitch (trust me, i'm attempting a subtitle track myself for another film!).
