View Full Version : Good King Arthur movies
One of my essays has me comparing Le Morte Darthur with a modern-day "text" (where text constitutes a film)
So far I have
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (which I'm buying anyway ;p)
Excalibur
Big no-no to First Knight. Any other good Arthur movies out there or is to worth plumping out 11.99 for Excalibur?

Well, there's always Arthur 2: on the rocks... ;)
Seriously, Excalibur's easily the best loose adaption of Morte d'Arthur that exists, as well as being a cracking film.
Because I trust you, I'm off to order it now
;)
Cheers mate
I finally got around to watching Excalibur (hey I'm lazy! ;)) the other day and can confirm it is certainly an enjoyable romp

You could also try Bresson's Lancelot du Lac 1974 (A.K.A. Le Graal). It's a fine film if a little austere and provides an interesting and unusual spin on the Arthurian legend.

Sadly, no Bresson films are available on DVD (is there any other director of his stature who's <U>totally</U> unrepresented in the medium?), though <I>Lancelot du Lac</I> was released on VHS by Artificial Eye. I think it's out of print, but any video shop with a half-decent foreign language section should be able to help.
I second the recommendation, by the way - it's probably the most intelligent and incisive Arthurian adaptation, even if it's very hard to watch it today without giggling. This is absolutely not Bresson's fault - it's just that it's visually <U>very</U> close to the Python film (I initially thought it was an influence, though it now seems that it was released months after the Pythons had finished shooting), so you do have to make some rather huge allowances!
