is this dreadful film about. it has taken me awhile to watch this film and i must say that i wish i hadn't bothered. the acting (what there was of it) is dreadful, denise richards is f** p***poor, someone should just kill her. can anyone remember the days when paul verhoeven could make decent movies like robocop and flesh and blood. micheal ironside what happened to him?

what do you think?

It was a very tongue in cheek film.

Especially amusing was the fact none of the actors realised this.

It's not high art, is it. As a satire on a militaristic state though I think it works well.

My one criticism though is that it outstays it's welcome by about 20 minutes.

That you had better remove the offensive language within your post.

So tell me homerj what films DO you like then. I know we can scrap the Matrix off your list as well as Starship Troopers?

I didn't mind ST although it's not one i would want to watch over again unlike the Matrix. The effects weren't bad but the acting and pacing left a bit to be desired.

I LOVE Starship Troopers - it's one of the funniest films I've seen in ages.....we're always quoting from our hero, Johnny Rico!

It's a great film that I could quite happily watch all day.......well, maybe not, but you get my point!

Is it something seasonal that's caused this recent flurry of bilious attacks on various films on these pages ? For my money, it's a tremendous film and I've grown ever more appreciative over the years. I think it's as observational as sci-fi has been in recent years. The problem with satire is that if it's well done and carried over with a minimum of sign-posting, then the audience often stands back, scratches its head and generally becomes indignant when spoon-feeding obviously isn't on offer.

And, as John Patterson pointed out on his 'Hollywood Reporter' column in the Guardian a few weeks ago, any sci-fi these days that aims higher than cutesy, syrupy simple-minded wonderment should be treasured as the rarity it invariably is.

if starship troopers is the way si-fi films are going, well god help as all.

Well if you're asking ..! Because I'm in a good mood, I'll be kind and say you've picked 4 or 5 films I probably know back to front and love passionately (Goodfellas, ANTR, Halloween, Godfather I/II) and the remainder bring to mind the old chestnut about eyes and needles. (Well, actually, I might let EFNY through the gate but I'd have to ignore at least half a dozen true Carpenter classics before stepping out that far ...)

I have to say homerj i've only seen three of your favs. SW, ESB and Halloween. It's not through lack of interest it's just those movies that always evade me. I've wanyed to see the Godfather in ages and have never got round to it, hopefully that should be rectified soon as it's now on dvd.

My favourite movies change like my underpants. I just like movies full stop, but a couple off the top of my head.....

Fight Club
Dumb & Dumber
Gridlock'd
Se7en
Once upon a time in America
Out of Sight
Beverly Hills Cop
Traffic
Beavis and Butthead do America

Anything really, i can find good points in most movies. I do find it hard to criticise movies as i always get some enjoyment out of whatever i watch. That's why i find it interesting reading why people dislike certain films.

Starship Troopers is a work of pure genius and i will not have any body dare soil it's name.

Obviously the ( not very ) subtle satire gets lost on some ( mainly American's ) but for those of us that do 'get it' love the film with a passion that's illegal in Costa Rica.

They sucked out his brain

C'mon what's not to love? :)

I've already enthused about Starship Troopers more than enough times in these forums and elsewhere, but it's still comfortably one of my favourite big-budget American films of the last few years, and welcome proof that it's still possible to be genuinely subversive within a supposedly totally controlled and commercialised framework. The more I see it the funnier it gets - most recently a month or so ago, where its all too pointed satire of brain-dead knee-jerk US militarism couldn't help but ring that much truer.

It's not my favourite Verhoeven - that would probably be either The Fourth Man or RoboCop - but it's a damn sight more interesting than anything else he's done in the US.

Starship Troopers gets repeated viewing in my household because me and my girlfriend love it so much. The satire and wit was all but lost on the US audiences, it is altogether a more European film - a real classic.

the film is really bad. it is with out one of the worst films ever made, even worse than ed woods plan 9 from outer space, but at least that had good actors in it.

robby: good films, i've seen all of them, but one that is gridlock'd.

How can a film that has:

Absolutely stunning CGI effects;

Giant brain-sucking bugs;

Non-stop ****-takes of right-wing propagandist drivel (clear references to both Nazi and American examples);

Non-stop ****-takes of gung-ho action movies;

Non-stop ****-takes of American popular culture in general;

Hysterically funny performances, delivering deliberately ludicrous dialogue with a totally straight face (just check out Michael Ironside's solemn lecture on the importance of violence at the beginning);

Doogie Howser MD in what can only be described as a Nazi uniform, despite supposedly being a sympathetic character;

possibly be "one of the worst films ever made"?

Just because you clearly didn't get any of the jokes doesn't mean that they aren't there!

I can remember seeing Dougie Howser in the Nazi uniform and being the only person laughing at it in a packed cinema. Its so over the top i just burst out laughing.

IMHO Michael Ironside can do no wrong!! I think he adds so much to anything he appears in. I mean, V the TV series was watchable until he left before the last season.

As to the movie, my son and I watch Starship Troopers very often. A very rewatchable film, and as said above it must have gone over the heads of the average US audience.

If you get the satire it's a really entertaining movie.

DeadKenny

It's one of those films where you have a split between those who "get it", and those who don't. The latter think it's utter crap, and the former understand the satire and the deliberate "crappiness" and "bad acting" feel (a trademark of Verhoeven - some of which is at the expense of the actors who may not be aware they're being having the **** taken out of).

I've seen people convert between the two also, where they've really hated it until it's been pointed out what it's about and then they love it, and more so if they watch other Verhoeven films.

Similar thing happened with Total Recall.

Still, as with all films, some people just won't like it for reasons of personal taste.

On the other hand, it truly could be that Verhoeven really is a bad filmaker and people have over-hyped him by trying to turn poor filmaking into genius. ;) (I don't agree with this myself).

Homerj,

I really hate saying what I'm about to say, because I know it is an annoying thing to say to someone, and I know I should respect people's opinions. But I have to say it:

You just don't GET the film.

There. Sorry. Starship Troopers is a great film on every level. The best thing is that people of all intellectual levels can walk out of the cinema (or press "stop" on their remote control") and be satisfied with what they saw. People who just want a dumb visual-effects action film can be awe-struck by the CG and all the violence. People who think a little deeper will get the condemnation of jingoism and the references to communism.

Like I said, I HATE saying, "You just didn't get it", because I know how insulting that sounds. But in the particular case of Starship Troopers, people who say, "The film is crap because the acting is so bad" really just don't get it.

Gotta love the news report with the kids stamping on cockraches, doing their part for the war effort...

Talking of which, there's an advert for Ford out in the States at the moment which reminded me of this. The advert keeps saying things like "We're doing our part", etc. Made me laugh :).

An excellent film, well executed. This was one of the first dvd's I bought and i did enjoy it the more I watched it, you need to get past the superficial scifi theme and maybe you'll pick up on all the pastiche in it.

I really must get round to replacing my 'flipper' copy.
