I've recently been looking at the new Marantz AV amps (5200) and have noticed that they have a single speaker binding for the rear centre channel.
What I want to know is, can you buy speakers singly ? All I've ever seen is price "per pair". What about buying a stand for it ? those also come in pairs right ?
Or are you supposed to buy another front centre and stick it to the wall or something ?

The rear centre is only a channel for sound effects so a centre speaker really isn't the perfect choice. In all fairness though you'll prolly find a centre is fine.

What is then?

Ideally an extra speaker of the type you've already got as your rear surrounds, to keep the tonal balance.

Yeah but that's my point. You can only buy them in pairs !!!
I don't want to have to buy 4 surrounds and then only use 3 of them ! Bit of a waste wouldn't you say ?
Unless anyone knows different ?
Maybe you could buy direct from a manufacturer ?

Which if you think about it, is even more of a waste, as your paying for an extra channel of amplification, which is unneccessary as the rear centre is still a mono source.
Hmmmmmm....

not having rear surround back centre with dts ES dvd,
is like useing 5.1 dolby digital dvd without the centre channel
= (4.1). Think about it.
with it .
u now have 3 channel up front like 5.1
and 3 rear channe unlike 5.1.
u need 2 surround back centre because in 5.1 most of the sound are send to left and right channel at the same time for big impack(mono). Think about it.
1 surround back centre speaker will not have the same impack
that why u need 2.
I hope that help.

THX recommend the use of 2 back surround speakers despite the fact the source is mono.
Part of this is for psychoacoustic reasons: a speaker placed directly behind the listener can give the impression of sounding forward centre of the listener.
Either buy 2 and connect up in parallel - the equivalent 4ohm average should be ok on this non full range channel, or find a reputable dealer who will sell single speakers. (Speakers in the 'States are priced singly for example).
If you do use a single centre rear, ideally it should be BI-polar; not mono, di or tri; only this will fire sound out along the back wall in phase.

That kinda makes sense.
I guess I'll have to go and talk to my local hifi store and see what they have to say. Or go for a more expensive AV receiver with two rear centre amps.
Connecting up in parallel sounds a bit dubious to me. It might unbalance the AMP.
Does anyone know frequency range of the rear centre channel ?
There is an interesting supplement in this month's Home Cinema Choice giving you the technical reasons why you should use two "rear centre" speakers and not one.
My Sony 1070 has the facility for one centre rear speaker and I posted questions on various forums and ngs asking for opinions from people who had set theirs up this way with no response.
I have the additional problem that my settee is flush against the back wall and positioning would be a problem.
I did get responses from people who were talking theory but not from anyone who had actually done it.
Mission M7DS seem to be popular rears at the moment and I was thinking of buying a pair and selling on the other one to a like minded person but have shelved the plan for the moment and will continue with 5.1

This one has caused me grief as well ivj.
I went from having 2 rears in parallel to having one rear centre. I was also a little bothered about the 4 ohms thing and didn't want to screw up my amp.
I'm not particularly happy with the rear centre I have at the mo - my mind is convincing me that the two rears were better! One of my main probs is that the rear centre is 8ft away and I have to turn it to max to hear the bugger.
btw ivj - I'm interested in the Missions!

Plus you can get “Sonic Whole Overhead Sound” out of this, I’m planning to install it for STAR WARS episode 3, before the release of the DVD this October 31st 2005….
That will take my set-up to 8.1 with left extra and right extra, planed for a future event presentation… ;)
