I was in the V Shop this morning glancing around the DVD section (as always :)) and noticed Blair Witch 2 and the cover is unbelievably horrible, I just can't even describe it, you have to see it for yourself! And I hate the landscape view on the back, just urgh!!
Ahem :)
So what DVD covers do you hate? What covers do you think you could **** out a better picture?

Anything by E.I.V.

There design dept is obviously run by Bin Laden.

I was in the States when Magnolia came out - I would have bought a copy then but had the R2 on order for when I got back. Imagine my horror when I saw the miserable, tacky effort EIV had done compared to the lovely US packaging!

Another EiV effort - Bring It On.

R1 - white background, picture of some cheerleaders.

R2 - blurred cheerleaders set against fluorescent orange & purple.

No contest.

Who cares about the sodding cover ?.

I don't remember anybody having this conversation about CD covers.

Broadly speaking, I'd prefer not to have tacky quotes splashed all over covers. The US covers tend not to have them but here we end up with messy covers like Magnolia, or Chopper, where the quotes draw more attention than the actual title. Dark City is another offender, but the UK release loses on other points too.

Then I guess you're not old enough to remember when CDs first came out. Some people felt that CD covers were rather lacking compared with LP covers.

I agree with the sentiment that it's the content that counts rather than the packaging containing it, but graphic designers aren't paid peanuts to create sleeve artwork. If the end result is shoddy then what's wrong with saying so?

Some people didnt like the obvious size reduction in the cover from LP to CD, which is completely different to having a problem with the actual design.

Agreed EIV need shooting for their covers. I also hate the quotes they rip from critics and papers. I don't really need the News of the World, or jonathon Ross to tell me what a good movie i've just bought.

I didn't like the blue case that came with Me, Myself and Irene either, especially as there is chapter listings on the opposite side of the cover so you can't see it.

EiV are definitely annoying for putting review quotes all over the packaging. It works pretty well for budget VHS videos, when any dumb 'tard is cruising for £3.99 crappy crap. But people buying DVDs already know what they are looking for... I would guess most people only buy a DVD if they've already seen the film. So it is inappropriate to try and sway the DVD buyer with review quotes from the Star and the Mirror.

I also don't like DVD cases where the back cover is in landscape rather than portrait. The Evil Dead 2 cover does that, and it is oddly crappy-looking.

And another thing I hate is the presentation of DVDs by "serious cinema" distributors. You know... the kind of packaging where the title of the film is in really small print in the upper corner, and the rest of the case is filled with technical details about the Director of Photography and stuff. It's like the polar opposite of EiV, but equally annoying.

Lusty Lucy's Luscious Lips.

The cover on that is horrendous (you'd be amazed what you can do with a traffic cone and a jar of Vaseline... :D   )

(Before anyone starts looking for that title, I should mention that I made it up. So don't bother looking for it :) )

"Night On Earth" R2 is pretty cheap and cruddy-looking. The cover design being suggested by EzyDVD right now for the upcoming (£10-11!) R4 looks much nicer. :)
