Hi,

Just watched Matchstick Men - fabulous I thought, and it got me thinking about which Ridley Scott films are missing from my collection.

I think basically its all the ones that haven't been given 'proper' releases (i.e. dodgy picture - Black Rain, from what I read, or no extras, like 1492).

Anyone have news on possible re-issues of his films? I'm being very patient over Blade Runner, and glancing at the shelf I have:

Someone to Watch Over Me
Blade Runner
Thelma and Louise
Hannibal
Gladiator
Legend
Alien
Matchstick Men

Which reminds me - what's the best version of Black Hawk Down to get again? ;)

Cheers,
A.

R3 superbit deluxe is the boy.

still waiting for Blade Runner, but it probably won't happen.

There was an extended cut of Gladiator on TV. (The DVD has the theatrical cut, with deleted scenes on Disc 2.)

Best version of Black Hawk Down is the Superbit Deluxe Edition...

Alien
Theres two theatrical cut releases with different commnetaries, 2 different directors cut's and 2 different discs of extras between the last 2 box sets + whatever was originally issued.
There can't be much more left !

Still - you can't have too much Alien

yeah, the new one is not as good as the old commentary. I liked the old commentary on my Alien: Special Edition of my previous Alien boxed set. You can't have too much Alien...

"So you haven't seen the Duellists then?"

I assume that one was directed at me?

Er, no.. I haven't, but I hadn't forgotten it wasn't on the shelf!

There's a good edition of 1492 available in R4.

No info, but it's being considered for sometime in 2005 by Paramount.

doh. just bought this too..ah well...

I am only missing one Ridley film now, 1492. Seems to be deleted on R1, sounds like a rerelease is needed.

Ridley is one of the few directors out there who doesn't edit and cut the dvd extras to make him look good. Watch out for Spider-man 2 love-fest extras :( to see what the director has done to protect his image.

There is a 2 disc Blade Runner SE expected Early 2005. It just has a re-mastered high def print of DC and another disc with the CH4 MK docu and supposedly other goodies (definatly a 5.1 with a DTS being on my wishlist)

I must admit to a soft spot for SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME. I'd like to see a Ridley commentary on that some day. Gorgeous visuals and a nice story, fine acting. Can't believe the same director would later debase himself with BLACK RAIN and GI JANE. Good grief, what was Ridley thinking?

I quite like Black Rain in a tacky, Greg-Allman croonin', Douglas' mullet a-blowin' way...

It's naff, yes, but enjoyably naff; and it has the great Takakura Ken in it... :notworthy

Garcia's decapitation by katana is genuinely still quite effective, even if the plot device necessitating it is crap...

Big fan of Black Rain, heard about the bad picture of current release, waiting for a better version.

I can't believe anybody cares about BLACK RAIN. If ever Ridley did a film just to pay the bills, this was it.

It's better than GI Jane or White Squall... it has its moments... and Douglas's mullet is not to be underestimated.

And, of course, it features the inestimably great Takakura Ken. Reason One to own.

Actually thought it was one of Michael Douglases best performances, and the hong kong actor was great, Andy Garcia was super as well, Scott's artisitic vision, cool soundtrack, buddy cop film, a well played realistic looking villain in Sato, a interesting look into Hong Kong darker elements in the way Tony Scott looked into Mexico in his film revenge. Sure Ridely has done better films, but even less the best ones beat other people best efforts.

Guess I'm alone in really liking "White Squall" then...

It picked up near the end but mostly I found it a trudge... and I'm all for Scott doing something that doesn't involve sandals, motorcycles, aliens or serial killers (I love The Duellists and I couldn't possibly count all the naysayers that cite that as being deathly dull) but White Squall just didn't do it for me.

I've only ever watched it the once though, on original rental release, so I could be persuaded to give it another chance.

You're not alone. I thought it was quite good as well. Id like to see 1492 as well. Good, nasty history lesson.

I don't know why but I found it incredibly moving. Might have been the mood I was in when I watched it, but I really enjoyed it.

Just saw on IMDB that 1492 only got a PG13 rating in America!?! From what i remember it was a very violent movie. Headshots, bloody stabbings, arrows in faces, neck snappings etc. Did we get a different version than America?

No chance on DTS, this is Warner we're talking about here ;)

From The DVD Talk Forum - Upcoming Re-Releases List (http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=89464)...
Blade Runner (SE, TC?, DC?, Definitive DC, workprint?, COM [Scott]?, 3D?)
Some sort of release is coming in 2005, but it ain’t the BIG edition that is in Limbo due to legal issues. Maybe just a 2 disc set of the current DC. NY Times (12/13/2003): The avidly awaited, definitive version of Ridley Scott's science-fiction classic, "Blade Runner," won't be out on DVD anytime soon for stranger reasons. When "Blade Runner" was being shot in the early 1980's, Bud Yorkin, a veteran television comedy producer, and Jerry Perenchio, now the C.E.O. of Univision, were the film's bond-completion guarantors. When the film went over budget, by contract they assumed ownership of the film. Paul Sammon wrote in his book "Future Noir: The Making of `Blade Runner' " that they hated the film, had bitter disputes with Mr. Scott and tried to take it away from him altogether. The studio release, in 1982, contained superfluous narration and a tacked-on rosy ending. Mr. Scott removed both when he was allowed to make a "director's cut" in 1992, but it was, by his own account, a rush job. Three years ago, Mr. Scott announced that he was working on a three-disc box set, which would offer all the versions of the film, including a new and polished director's cut with previously unseen footage and scads of bonus features. Then, at the end of 2001, Warner Brothers, which was planning to distribute the discs, pulled the plug. It did so, according to a producer who worked on the project, because Mr. Perenchio gave no sign that he would let them be released. Mr. Perenchio, speaking through an assistant, had no comment on the situation."

Here, here, Douglas is so compelling. Black Rain is a cop film that deserves to be mentioned in a list such as The French Connection and To Live and Die in L.A.

I've got a soft spot for Dark Blue as well.

With all the legal squabbling over the DC after all these years I'll believe a BR:SE copy being released when one is being held in my hand & I see it with my own eyes. :dork:  :suspect:

DTS sound & Warner Brothers? Forget it mate....

I'll settle for WB to get a decent copy out this time, with a WETA style cleanup of the print & 5.1 sound. Not too much to ask for is it :?: :brickwall

I love Black Rain. That and Tony's Days Of Thunder are the two films I'd most like to see redone with good anamorphic transfers. I'd also shell out for a White Squall and a better 1492 (the R4 is ok but a bit soft I thought). I think all the other Scott brothers films are now covered.

I think they went easy on it because of it's historical significance and the fact it came out on the anniversary of the events. Bit like giving Micheal Collins a PG in Ireland.

I just got the bare-bones R2 Black Rain cheap, and it's hands down the worst transfer I've ever seen of a big studio movie. I hope the SE comes out soon so I can chuck this one in the bin where it belongs.

Black Rain was a terrible film, as was White Squall and GI Jane..1492 left a lot to be desired also, but excellent Vangelis score. Legend is complete rubbish but superb Goldsmith score. I seem to remember liking Someone To Watch Over Me but that was a long time ago..its Blade Runner, thats the classic..thats the DVD for me, hopefully in a spinner shaped case that plays "Home again, home again, jiggidy-jig!" every time it is opened.
