Which is the best version to get? I was wondering about ordering the new region 4 CE release which comes out 7 Nov. Anyone have details?

At the moment the Criterion (http://www.criteriondvd.com/details.asp?spine=108) version is the best. I doubt the R4 will be anywhere near as comprehensive.

The Criterion version is superb. Amazing transfer and top quality DTS soundtrack (there is a DD5.1 track also) and good extras, definately the version to get even though a little pricey.

The R2 is quite heavily cut so the R4 may be as well.

But interestingly EzyDVD are showing the criterion cover for this here (http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/219223/id=rLwn7:6JcXI)

Buena Vista are releasing a two disc version in the UK in Spring next year. This should be similar to their re-issue of Armageddon, not sure exactly what extras will be on it, but should be very close to the Criterion version. Might be worth waiting for this version instead.

Look at the features list:

Dual Layer Disc
Featurette
Interactive Film
Scene Selection
Theatrical Trailer

Get the Criterion!.

Judging by the extras list and price, this looks to be equivalent to the version recently released here - i.e. very few extras, and may well be cut (if it's the MA-rated version or the UK version as both are cut - but the edits are different - details here - Spoiler Warning (http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Censorship/CensorshipDetail.asp?ID=218))

And unfortunately all subsequent UK releases will also have to be rated "15" as per BBFC guidelines, so unless the BBFC decides that the uncut version is a "15" (unlikely) any future releases will also be cut. :(

Thanks for everyone's input. Think I'll leave this one on the wish list for now and wait for the UK 2 disc in the Spring. Criterion's a bit pricey for me.

The R4 version is out now, and according to the review and links here (http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Reviews/Reviews.asp?ReviewID=770) the film is UNCUT. The extras do not match the Criterion edition however.

There is R1 NTSC on the box. Is it actually R1 or R0 - can't tell. My player is not telling me ;-)

Quote from Michael Brooke on another thread:

It seems to be Criterion's policy not to region-code their discs unless they're forced to by the rights holder.

So most Criterion discs are region-free, but exceptions include titles licenced from Buena Vista (Armageddon, The Rock, Chasing Amy) or Toho in Japan (the Kurosawa titles, Kwaidan) and a few one-off oddities like The Passion of Joan of Arc and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie.

Criterion's <I>The Rock</I> is 100% definitely R1 NTSC.

I'm with everyone else on this one, the Criterion edition is superb. Fantastic picture and sound, with tons of extras. Worth the extra money, and you'd better get it while you can 'cos when Criterion lose the rights they'll be nigh on impossible to get hold of...
