Cool! Hope it's as good as his last one - Strange Beautiful Music. Hope it's not like Engine's of Creation though. I hate that CD even more than you hate "Vapour Trails" :D
Can't be too long to the next Steve Vai studio effort either.
Speaking of guitar, I was in a bar in Belfast last night drowning my Shamrock (The Point - Ballyhackamore) and there was a cracking guitarist playing all sorts of cool rocky acoustic stuff like Zep's Bron y ur and Triumph's Midsummer Daydream. Very tasty playing.

I don't HATE 'Vapor Trails' at all ... I just think it's woefully average on the song front & shoddily produced compared to most of the RUSH catalogue; hell, I even like 'Test For Echo' more ;)
That said it's still better than most of the rock stuff that's currently knocking about :D
On the Satch front I have to agree that 'Engines ...' was a bit of a disappointment but at least there were 4 decent tracks of which 3 turned up in better shape on his 'Live In San Francisco' set.
Memo to Steve Vai as well ... for heaven's sake please stop singing !!!
I've only got 2 Joe Satriani CD's atm ("Surfing With The Alien" and "Flying In A Blue Dream" ) Both of which I think are great  :notworthy
Which one would you recommend I buy next ?

The albums most in keeping with those two I would say are "The Extremist" (1992) & "Crystal Planet" (1998) ... outside of these he has tended to be a bit more experimental & varied with his playing & songwriting.

I really like Engines of Creation. Some really cool stuff in there. Though i think Crystal Planet is his best work. Really lookign forward to the G3 tour:thumbs:
Like the cover, although i wish satch would stop wearing those daft hats...he looks cooler bald

I like the self-titled 'Joe Satriani' album, I think it came out after 'Time Machine', although that's a lot more jazzy than his earlier stuff.
'The Extremist' is good but Matt & Gregg Bissonnette are the 'ploddiest' rhthym section in the world (they were bound to sound a bit rubbish after Jonathon Mover/Simon Phillips and Stu Hamm though). Saying that it must be Matt as Gregg was fine on his own with DLR, then they turned crap when Matt joined !
Saying that 'War' (I think it's called) off 'The Extremist' rocks like a mother !:)
I'll put "The Extremist" and "Crystal Planet" on my to buy list then.
 :)

Totally agree your Satch choices there RDNZL!
> Saying that 'War' (I think it's called) off 'The Extremist' rocks like a mother !
Oh true indeed!
As for Vai's voice. I actually think he's getting quite good vocally. I love the song Silent Within on Ultra Zone. Great song with a killer sublime howling solo. Satch can sing natch though! :D

At least he realised as much after one album (4 songs) & one b-side ;)
Mr. Vai still insists on wasting up to half an album with his insipid vocal witterings though

I've got my G3 ticket for Bournemouth on 27th June.
Robert Fripp seems a strange choice to me. Anyone able to elucidate why ?

:searchme:
Do you mean why he seems odd or why he is on tour with them
Cannot answer the first but i can vaguely answer the latter. Fripp has often acted as a warm up act on previous US G3 tours. Seems they couldnt get anyone else for this tour so he is elevated to a full G.
Fail to see why Fripp wont play in england with King Crimson yet is happy to do solo (sort of) bits though.
I am going to brum :D

I think the addition of Fripp is to provide a greater level of diversity to the bill. As amazing as Yngwie would be I think having 3 scarily fast players on the same bill could be overkill. Having Robert Fripp (and, imho, his amazing 'friptronics' playing) will be great.
I didn't realise satch was releasing soon. Looks like a good year for guitar-fans
Can't wait for the G3 tour either - be drooling over this coming to Europe since its inception

Thank heavens it's only appears to be a couple of tracks & that both of those were pretty weak anyway :D
after seeing Yngwie on the G3 Live in Denver DVD I'm glad he's not playing, saw him years ago at Hammersmith and he was bad enough then :D
got a ticket for G3 at Albert Hall

Yngwie was so awful in the King's Hall in Belfast that the audience threw all the plectrums he flicked off his mike stand into the audience back at him.
He was not a happy bunny. :D
I remember his desperate attempts to get the crowd going when I saw him, it didn't work.... the only ones chanting "yngwie, yngwie" were his band, all he got back silence
the sound was terrible which can't have helped, they sounded great from the bogs. The highlight was one of his band doing some classical stuff, the rest was crap :D

Worth a bump to say you can order the satch cd at cdwow now. They dont tend to stock satriani/vai etc cds for that long in my experience
Just got my copy today & it's excellent ... probably his best effort since 'The Extremist'

CD-WOW still havent posted mine :( Really looking forward to this...
Are there some really good rocking tracks RDNZL? I prefer songs when he lets rip, like War for example. Top tune that one:thumbs:
Most tracks are of the mid-paced variety but rock out nevertheless :)
Generally it touches upon aspects of a lot the playing styles of previous albums (esp. 'Crystal Planet' but with a far better production job) without ever sounding like a tired rehash .... the epic 'Searching' (10.07) is fantastic :notworthy
I only have his last release, can't even remember what that was called. Better or worse than that?? :D

I don't like Satriani but have had to listen to the new album all week.
Is it just me or does he repeatedly play part of the Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy theme tune in the third track?
I only have his last release, can't even remember what that was called
Strange Beautiful Music was last studio album, think the new one is better, though he can do nothing wrong afaic :D

Sound wise it is top notch. The picture is good apart from some crappy 80s video effects added over the top. They spoil it a bit, but you get used to it. It is still a really good watch and I dont want to put anyone off. Shame it is only 4:3 too.

Wot? You even liked Engines Of Creation? I could only get into 1 song on that whole album!
yep, only a few duff tracks, the rest are great :D esp Attack
some of his stuff takes a few more listens but I like the way he changes the sound of each album, though many fans dont. can't wait till June at Albert Hall.

I would echo thomasc1982's comments, but add that they failed to adequately brief the camera operators and consequently there was a lack of availability of shots of Steve's left and right hands. Where you would want a great closeup of Steve pulling off one of his superb monents, you may get a shot of Bill Sheehan pulling a funny face.
Some of Tony Macalpine's sound is totally lost in the 5.1 mix. He plays some great parts, but it is a strain to hear them.
Worth buying though in my opinion, but as I was there on one of the nights it is particularly special and I might be biased.

Aaah. Just finished the first spin. Nice one Satch! Definitely as good as Strange Beautiful Music, possibly better.
I'll have a cuppa, leave it an hour and give it another spin. :)

Well, it's in tune and harmonious and fits the song. What more dja want? Maria Callas? Dave Lee Roth? The Goodies?

To use BOC as an example since you're also a fan ... I'm sure Eric Bloom knows a few guitar chops but it's Buck Dharma you wanna hear playing the solos ;)

.. or Aldo Nova if he's doing a guest spot! Man, I LOVE that solo on "Take Me Away".
Aye. And Eric should stick to EVIL vocals. Let Buck to do the nicey girly GOOD ones.
I Like The Rain - "The Big Bad rain's comin' down on me tonight!" :D

I wonder if he plays that solo when he's part of Celine Dion's touring band

Why do I have a horrible feeling you are being serious? Poor Aldo. What a guitar hero street cred crusher.
I'm sitting here listening to Strange beautiful music in anticipation of the arrival of the new album tomorrow :)

Standout track for me is the title track "Is There Love In Space?". A beautiful beautiful song with some spine tingly good guitar playing.
The main riff in the vocal verses in "Lifestyle" really gets me groovin' too. Simple and effective in a dirty AC/DC meets Stevie Ray sorta way which in my book is no bad thing!
