Lord of the Rings - Return of the King (Extended Edition)

Does anyone know when this will be released?

Surely it will not be too long after the release of the theatrical edition.

it will be released no sooner than November maybe even in December, because they say holiday season, that is november/december time.

Around November time, although it hasn't been announced yet.

It's a bit cruel they are going to make us wait so long after the release of the theatrical edition just to get the extended edition. Ah well just have to be patient I guess. :|

With all the talk that this extended release could be up to 5 hours long () does this mean the release will be five discs? Three for the film, and two discs for the extras?

Ian it has already been confirmed that the Extended edition will be 4 hrs 15min long, however no mention if that is with or without credits. This comes from Peter Jackson himself.

Have they been that definitive about not releasing it before Nov? Nothing i've read as seemed that clear. I can't see why they would wait till Nov again, the main reason they did that previously was to hype the next film, which obviously there's no need now. Its gonna be a big seller whenever its released, and the sooner you get it out there (given a decent period after the TE) the sooner you get your money in...

I still hold out hope for August!

It might make sense to leave it until November, though. You get all the Christmas sales - and remember that it's going to be pretty expensive at retail, so it's less likely to be an impulse buy than a normal-priced DVD.

You also have the time to sell tons of the theatrical version, then drop the price and sell more to the people who were holding out for November but couldn't resist any longer.

Personally I'd be happier if they released it next week, but that's just me.

I disagree there - November is too late to maximise Xmas sales, as a lot of people do their Xmas shopping before then. I would have thought Sept/Oct would be a better time to release it.

Probably because Mr Jackson and a lot of the LOTR team are now heavily into the pre production of 'King Kong';)

All the more reason to get the extended edition out sooner rather than later I would say. Should put it out at the same time as the theatrical cut, or wouldn't that fit with the marketing strategy! :suspect:

Won't it take some time for WETA to compete the effects work for the extended edition? And will Howard Shore be recording some new music? I heard that Jackson had approved the final edit but I'm sure that doesn't mean the film is finished.

I think September is a realistic date but they may not want to clash with the SW trilogy release.

The New Line press release for the Theatrical Cut states that the EE will be out in the Holiday season at the end of the year. In America the holiday season is Thanksgiving which is November so the EE is going to be released then. As a previous post has stated Peter Jackson may have finalised the cut, but Weta still need to do all the effects, Howard Shore needs to get the new music done (being done this month), the cast and crew need to record the commentaries and all the documentaries have to be put together. This is quite a time consuming business all in all so November is a very realistic date in my view. As I have stated before, I am quite prepared to wait until November to get a product that is as polished as the previous two EE's have been rather than get something a little earlier that is not as special.

Hear hear!

At least the theatrical cut is out early. I'm buying that as I love the film so much:notworthy. It will tide me over nicely until November.

Also they'll probably release all 3 extended editions at the pictures again in December.

Was in the States before Xmas and the extended Two Towers & Fellowship releases were big releases during that period - dunno what the reaction to them was here? If all 3 are released this year they're definately worth going to see! (I was lucky enough to see them as part of the trilogy tuesday event  )

Heard a rumour today from a mate who works in the retail industry, specifically home entertainment and he said that they have heard that the EE will be out in September. If true then what a month that is going to be what with ROTK and the Star Wars Original Trilogy both being released.
