Why are R3s generally non-anamorphic and accepted ?.

I dont think anywhere else would accept non-anamorphic discs as standard, why R3 ?.

Perhaps people don't mind the loss of quality in exchange for extremely low prices. After all, they still seem to sell a lot of VCDs over there (low quality but dirt cheap).

VCDs are being slowly phased out in China as DVD players now cost about £80 and DVDs can be picked up for 50p in Shenzhen economic zone (yeah pirate).

Maybe Wide Screen TVs never took off in HK? If there's bugger all WS TVs on the market, there's not much point in doing anamorphic DVDs. :confused:

Well, WS sets haven't exactly been a roaring success in the US either, so that's no excuse. :/

Two reasons, as far as I can see:

1. Lack of widespread widescreen TV usage;
2. Recycled laserdisc transfers keeping prices down.

There are <U>some</U> anamorphic HK discs, but they're in a very tiny minority.

As mentioned, Hong Kong has an AV economy driven by piracy.

The ligit distributers just cannot compete on the same level as they do in the West hence the less effort going into R3 discs to keep costs down.


My brother is in HK and he can get perfectly good quality pirate DVDs for that often heard price "3 for HK$100". Those of you who have been to HK will surely recognise that phrase!!
