View Full Version : Xbox Live Newbie Chat - what to sign up to? [Live discussion]
Right, xbox live is working like a blind man's dream, so what do I need to sign up to?
There's the thing for Links and something for Top Spin, wasn't there a clan thing for Rainbow 6 3 as well?
And what about that messenger thingy - something that shows who is on Xbox Live at the present time and playing what?
Btw, Gamertag is Party Boy Matt. Thanks to everyone who helped make this special day happen :cry:
Going back to Uni soon though :( but will be online some of Weds night, pretty much all day Thurs, Fri, some of Sat, and Sunday :D
You need to link your Gamertag to your MSN Passport. That way you can use the website to see who's online, and join the XSN tourney's for Top Spin and Links.
There isn't anything offical that runs locally to tell you who's online yet (although I posted a link to one that a Microsoft Dev had written).
Support for who's online through a tab in messenger is coming soon, apparently.
Go to www.xbox.com to link your Gamertag to your MSN Passport. (you can then use this site to see who is online in your friends list without switching on your xbox)

:lol: We were doing last man standing, where everyone starts in minis and whoever comes last gets to move up a class. The idea being that it evens out the racing as the better drivers will be stuck in the slower cars. In practice it doesn't work that well for the first few classes, some cars are definitely a downgrade from the mini!
I actually prefer the reverse way, where everyone starts in ultimates and whoever comes first has to drop a class - it becomes pretty hard to beat a GT1 in a Noble!

AFAIK it's possible, but not all games will run well and you won't be able to host any games. I've got a spare Xbox Live 2-month trial code if you want to test it...
Can't you go for the 600k, it's only £7pm more for 4x download/2x upload and would be fine for Live...
600k would be fine. Mine is great, only games that I get lag on are Top Spin :(

Nope, they don't take anything on the free trials, it's for security I think, plus if you want to download updates that you have to pay for ie one of the courses on links.

Is it really worth it? I started a thread ages ago on it and the general consensus was no, not really.
But after playing it myself the answer is "oooooooooooh hell yes :D"
It totally rocks, playing with people you know (albeit over the forums) was great fun, really added a new dimension to gaming. Love it. :thumbs:
Only £30 from amazon for headset and 12 months, can't go wrong with it really.

Personally I would say yes as it adds a whole new dimension to the gaming (and works really welll which always helps).
PGR2 = Project Gotham Racing 2
Recently a lot of new games had free 2 month Live trials included in them. I think they may be useable up until the end of the month. If you can get one (it's a code you enter) then you can try it for free and see what you think.
It does mean you tend to buy games that you may not have done just cos it's the next BIG Live thing though :searchme:
Good point about the trial though. You got till end of March, so that's two days. So set it up ASAP (I've got a code laying around I reckon, email me if you want it and don't have one yourself) and you got 2 months to have a play with it, albeit without headset.

Yeah pretty much mate. All new xboxs come with the live dash installed. Presuming you connect it, you just need the code.
That's all the live pack is really. A CD about what live can do etc which you don't need, a 12 month code and a headset.
Presuming you're gonna get something fairly recent with the console you should get a code inside it. Like I said, if you didn't get a trial code with anything and want to try out a game on Live (that you have that's live enabled, obviously) drop me a line I got one trial left.

Not for the trial. The code you enter gives a 2 month subsciption for free but no headset. A normal Live pack gives you a code lasting for 12 months plus the headset. Amazon is the cheapest place for this at £30.

I am completely useless at setting this stuff up - but cant I just unplug the ethernet cable from the back of my pc and plug it in the xbox?

I'm not sure about that NTL thing sorry mate I'm not with them. I suppose you could do that with your cable yeah but could be a bit of hassle unplugging all the time, plus then you can't be online at the same time, if you wanted to set up a game with a mate on MSN or whatever.
Midtown Madness is indeed Live enabled, don't think it'll have a code with it but it may well, MS are trying to promote live more and more.

Dave, don't bother subscribing to that NTL "service", you should be able to unplug the cable and stick it in the xbox. Depending on whether you've got a cable modem or STB you may need to reboot the CM/STB and possibly clone your PC's MAC address in the xbox live settings.
Alternatively get a router and leave everything plugged in, that's how mine is set up. I'd be happy to help out or give you a demo if you want :thumbs:

In short, no. I don't pay any extra to NTL. You will prolly want a headset though, and as I am sure yo will love online gaming via the xbox, you might be better getting an xbox live kit from town, fair enough it may cost a little more but you could playing ith us lot online tomorrow, oh BTW, you might also want to get a copy of PGR 2 as well, as it seem to be next big thing on here as its the greatest game ever. Just finished about 2 hours of cat and mouse, man that rocks.

Yeah a router is the best option it is so easy, and it makes everything so much more secure. It is literally plug and play.

Networking doesn't work like that, each device needs its own IP address, and the standard NTL service only gives you one. The £5pm service gives you two IP addresses, one for the PC and one for the xbox.
A router takes the IP address assigned by NTL but can then assign internal address to a number of PCs/xboxes/etc and then route the network traffic to/from the internal network to NTL.
The other option is to stick another network card in your PC, then use internet connection sharing, but obviously your PC would need to be on when going on xbox live.

You can buy a router which the NTL box plugs in to, and then this goes off to your PC and Xbox seperately. Or (and this would be cheaper- it's what I did) you can put another network card in your PC and link that to the Xbox. The only thing there is that the PC has to be switched on when you want to go on Xbox Live.

I am getting a new PC on Thursday (one of the Aldi ones - i know the manager at my local and he is saving me one) - its got wireless technology - can i use this with the xbox as my PC is upstairs but I wanted the xbox down stairs?
I must sound completely thick.................
Also I am getting it chipped, all software (media centre etc) put on and 120 gig hd put in it for £110.00 - does this sound okay?

If your PC is wireless then you should consider a wireless router such as this one (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=45023) - I have it and it works very well. It's the faster 54G standard, but is backwards compatible with 11Mbps 802.11b. If these terms are alien to you just do a search in here, there's loads of wireless threads :)
You can also get a wireless bridge to go with that, which is a small box with an antenna and an ethernet port - it basically makes any ethernet device a wireless one, such as an xbox - matt's got one here, as do a few others and they are supposed to work well. Personally I have the router in the same room as the xbox, so that is wired while my PC upstairs is wireless.
A MAC address is a unique serial number on every network card/device that is used to identify each piece of hardware on a network. NTL use it to only allow certain PCs broadband access - you may remember having to register your PC's details when you first got NTL before you could access the net. In the Live settings on the xbox there's an option to clone a MAC address, i.e. the one from your PC, so NTL think that the same device is connected and you still have broadband access from the xbox, even though it is a different device!

Yep I've got one here. Works like a charm after a quick phone call to Linksys tech support. Best thing really is decide where you want everything, then look at the best options to set it up. ie You want PC here, xbox here, broadband point is here, you do/don't want wires etc.
And then go from there.

Xbox Live doesn't really need the higher speed, but usually if you have a mixed speed network, the whole thing runs at the slower speed, so it affects any other device on the network. Also the higher speed would be better for FTP transfers between PC-Xbox.
Also, it's not strictly necessary to get everything the same brand, but it can minimse any problems you might have. In my experience the router is the main thing though, I used to have a Netgear one and that could be a bit flakey with xbox live...

In regards to the extra fee for NTL, that fee is becuase with the hardware they use, they give you 2 IP addresses to use, one for your PC and one for your console. Just get a router and that will get it sorted. D-Link 604 is the one I use, now costs £30 or so, as everything is in the same room for my setup.

Think it was Rob and Martin I was playing against tonight for a few races. You guys are damn good though, I had no sound or mic though as I couldn't find my mic and had to have tele noise off.

Had a quick burst of PGR2 last night which was excellent, especially as I was hosting so could kick off the irritating Yank who kept shouting ALL the time! Couple of quick questions for a Live Newbie - after 30 mins or so PGR2 completely locked up. Does this happen often? I guess the Xbox is prone to crashing as much as anything else?
Secondly, whilst I was signing up to Live - the missus turned the PC on upstairs and Norton AV thru a wobbler. Am using a wireless router, I should be able to use both at the same time shouldn't I?

re: the xbox locking up. This is not usual. I've had the Dirty disc error (DDE) on PGR2 once and sometimes it takes ages to load a track but this is not usual.

Re: Antivirus - I go on live with a laptop running XP and PC running ME all online. No problems here. That's with AVG and McAfee though.

I used to get lockups on PGR2 quite a lot, but have just swapped my xbox's DVD drive from a Thomson to a Samsung and it's a world of difference - games load faster and it copes with older discs that I used to have problems with.
My GT is r1skbreak3r, feel free to add me to your friends list. I mainly play on PGR2, but also have Rainbow Six 3, Top Spin, Links, Crimson Skies, Unreal Tournament, Counterstrike, Midtown Madness and Xiii.

Online is much faster really. Faster than RS3 going by my limited experience and more precise. Someone was saying that in RS3 you can't run away from a grenade if one lands at your feet.

I'm thinking about getting MotoGP2, but mainly for Live. Is there anyone still playing this game on Live, and is there anywhere I can check on this? I don't want to buy a game that's dead on live :(
I play Moto GP 2 online :)
It had a quite hardcore following on live, it's not as easy to find a game as say, PGR2, but there's often about 4 or 5 games going when I log on, usually the evenings for Moto Gp 2. The thing is you need to play a fair bit of the single player to get your stats up to stand anywhere near a chance of competing online. The best bet is to do the stunt challenges - fairly easy and will take about an hour before you can get a reasonable bike to take online. If you want to do a career to get your stats up though, and stand a chance of winning it'll take a while, one because you need to do all the tracks and win them on the medium difficulty (not amazingly hard but there are a fair few tracks) and because you'll need to do the challenges to learn the game - which are super hard. Very rewarding though, most of my time on it is time trial against my friends list. If you can pick it up cheap it might be worth it (£20 in Woolies) depending how much time you are willing to invest offline first.
It's quite nifty with the old bandwidth too, I can happily host 16 on my 512/256 connection. Talking in game is limited to person in front and person behind though.

I've got a couple of quick questions and this thread seemed appropriate!
1) If I got on LIVE using a trial can I then buy a starter kit and add the 12 months sub to the end of my initial 2 months sub?
2) I seem to recall reading somewhere that the MotoGP trial version that comes with the starter kit "unlocks" to the full game if you have a MotoGP save on your XBox. Is that correct?

I made another attempt with Google for the MotoGP query and turned this up:
If you have a MotoGP save file on your Xbox hard drive, the demo will detect it, and open up all the levels from the original game for use on Xbox Live.
So it gives you all the levels for playing on LIVE, not off-line. Which is nice. Mind you, does anyone play this game now it's been superceded by MotoGP2?

A headset might help. How come you don't have a headset though? Are you on a trial code?
SC2 is playable without a headset but it is a bit of a handicap. You'll basically have to listen to your team mate and let them take charge to a certain extent. It's certainly worth a go though, it seems strange that people will buy a game but not play on-line with it.

I think you mentioned you were buying it so I added you then. You may need to d/l an update because they did one sometime last week.

Depends what you like mate. Personally I don't think you could go far wrong with Project Gotham Racing 2.

Oh yes.... it's street racing not track racing, and it's more arcadey but still keeping within the bounds of realism. Tbh if you're quite into racing game there's no reason why you shouldn't own this.
Choices: Get PGR2 and a trial (ask on classifieds I'm sure someone will give you one) or buy the PGR2 Live Starter Pack - game, 12 months and headset. Tbh the headset is a big part of the fun of xbox live but of course it's more money and if you dont like the service you've paid for 12 months.
Don't forget PGR2 is £18.99 from CD-Wow. :)
Just used the Game "4 game trade in" and got PGR2 Live Starter Pack for £20.99

You can go straight on Live but you'll probably spend a few races bouncing off barriers, plus you'll only have the starter cars to choose from, which are pants. I'd play some of the offline mode to start with, earn a few Kudos tokens and buy a few cars.

When I bought my Live Kit the geek behind the counter was adament my Visa Debit Card wouldn't work "It HAS to be a CREDIT card".
Put the number in and it worked straight off. Idiot.
So, if your card has a VISA or MASTERCARD logo on it, and it's not a SOLO or ELECTRON card, chances are it'll work.
Electron is visa though :confused:

Okay, totally off-topic here, but this is why...
Electron cards are designed for people with poor/no credit history. All transactions carried out using an Electron card have to be verified between the retailer and your bank AT THE TIME OF THE TRANSACTION. This is so that you ONLY spend funds in your account and do not go overdrawn.
A lot of purchases on "normal" VISA cards (i.e. Delta and Credit) are not verified in this way as the strain of sending every single transaction across the VISA network would bring the whole thing to it's knees.
This is why the majority of e-tailers and other on-line payment systems won't / can't accept Electron cards as they are not setup to verify the transaction when you click your "order" button.
