View Full Version : Chasing Amy... WOW!
I have been meaning to see a Kevin Smith film for some time now and I had the chance to read the Chasing Amy screenplay... WOW! I was hooked from the first word and read the entire thing in around three quarters of an hour savouring every page... My only complaint was the constant use of extremely explicit sexual language.
What I want to know now is which KS film I should watch first - preferably NOT something with that amount of profanity - what's Dogma like in comparison?
I would recommend going to this page (http://www.godamongdirectors.com) if you want to read some good scripts - including Chasing Amy.

They all have that amount of profanity/sexually explicit language in them. Dogma maybe less so in the main, but it's still riddled with swear words.
Anyway, I'd watch them in this order -
Clerks
Chasing Amy
Dogma
Mallrats
Just Call Me Wanda

I'd watch them in the order they were made:
Clerks - his low budget black and white film
Mallrats - critics largely hate this but I personally think it's fantastic.
Chasing Amy - a very presonal film, probably his best
Dogma - worst of the bunch IMHO but still worth watching
They’re all brilliant. Watch them all NOW!
and "jay and silent bob strike back" will be in the cinema at the end of november, you'll appreciate it a lot more after watching all the other films :)

I'd have to agree with Just Call Me Wanda - watch them in the order they were made. I'd take issue with Dogma being the worst one, but I can't really place any of them above the others - they are all top-notch :D
Snoochie Boochie!!!
I too would recommend watching them in order even tho I didn't I saw Mallrats, Dogma then Clerks and finally Chasing Amy. I remember watching mallrats on tv before I saw dogma at the cinema which actually had nothing to do with each other and at that point I wasn't aware that silent bob directed them. I'm not as ignorant now tho as I own them all :)
I'd also say that of the films Chasing Amy is the one that has the most plot and relies least on the profanity (although I agree with Kevin Smith that there was no need for the c word in it) and if profanity is a problem for you, then you may have a problem with clerks. That said Clerks animated doesn't have ANY swearing in it but if you listen to the commentary or watch the intro's then they make up for it :)
Anyway I love them all and look forward to JASBSB.

Profanity? PROFANITY??... I could give you that whole Warren Beatty speech from Bulworth, but there is too much... eh, profanity in it, anyway, that's part of Kevin Smith's movies, and lots of humour is based on it. You gotta take it or go watch saturday morning cartoons :D

As much as I loved Clerks and I disliked Mallrats and hated Dogma I thought Chasing Amy was very flat and complete pants.
The story is just naff. Good actors no doubt but the last 30mins feels like it was tagged on.
I think Smith's films are for adults that haven't grown up (me included).
He does nowt for me though -apart from Clerks.
Look, I don't mind swearing in films (Pulp Fiction is my favourite film) I just thought there was an unnessesary amount of sexually explicit language in Chasing Amy... IMO of course...
Clerks in on Film FOur every couple of weeks I'll catch it then...
Thanks for your help.

It'll all slot into place when you actually watch it. As it's only certain characters that actually swear and it's easier to understand why once you've watched the film.
