View Full Version : Movie locations
HI - I was wondering if there exists on the web a site that lists movie locations from actual films.
Reason I ask is because while I was in New York last week I found the exact street that was used in the famous poster for "Once upon a Time in America". It was an amazing sight to tell the truth.
Please tell me you got a photo?! :D

Sweet! I'm sure Spike Lee did that long take crane/steadicam shot from <i>25th Hour</i> here too!
Nice!
I love the idea of checking out locations from favourite movies / TV shows. A couple of years ago me and some friends hired out 'Thornley Manor' for a weekend, the mansion renovated in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet Series Two. It hadn't changed a bit and the owner was the same from filming in 1985, with loads of anecdotes. While we were there we also checked out 'The Barley Mow', the bar run by Arthur 'Tiger' Pringle in the same series. Oddly enough, Maurice Roeves was having a drink in there at the time - star of Tutti Frutti, another 80's TV diamond. It was quite a memorable trip! I've also been to the Dusseldorf bar from Series One where Michael Elphick, Tim Healy and Jimmy Nail start a riot.
If I can get a confirmation on a few exact locations I may do a Walk To Remember location hunt in the summer (North Carolina). Who's the man?
Yeah it is good fun.
I also tracked down the very alley is the scene in "Reservoir Dogs" where Mr Brown dies and Mr White starts shooting cops...
I just watched "Somewhere in Time" and apparently they have a lot of people go to the Grand Hotel for the same reasons.

I did the Sopranos tour when I was in NY a few weeks back. It was sweet! Got a cannoli and got to visit loads of locations icluding teh Bada Bing (which in the real world is called Satin Dolls!) and it looks exactly the same as the Bing in the show as obviosuly they film there. Recomend it heartily.
Check out this site for details of locations from Dirty Harry, Play Misty for Me and Sudden Impact:
http://www.movietours.com/
I'm going to San Fransisco for my honeymoon soon, and I think the Dirty Harry tour will be done... even if it does end in a swift divorce.
Also, Pennan, where they filmed Local Hero is about an hour from where I live. And you can still use the phone box.

Any recommendations for movie locations to see in LA?
There must be loads in LA. eg:
The pier for the final scene of "Falling down"
The alley detailed above in "Reservoir Dogs"
Loads of Pulp Fiction and other Dogs ones
The Greek observatory in "Rebel without a cause"
The Hard Rock cafe in "LA Story"
must be hundreds !!!
I'd liked to see some of the places in "Heat"
I shot parts of a short film of mine in London and it was only afterwards when I was watching A Fish Called Wanda that I realised we'd filmed a scene in the same place as one of theirs! It's the scene with the lock-up under the railway arches.
I used to have a comparison picture with a side-by-side shot of a still from Fish Called Wanda next to a still from mine, and they're almost identical!
Also I was on a bike ride near my house in the area where I know they shot the opening of Gladiator, and then suddenly I was in that big clearing where the barbarians charge at the Romans! It hasn't changed much & was very recognisable...
It's quite fun finding movie locations by accident... :)
I've posted this before, but Jude Law's flat in The Wisdom of Crocodiles was the flat I was living in at the time. The interior was filmed somewhere else, but the exterior was mine. They were there for about a week in December 1997. The location was chosen for its old style Angel Heart elevator (which only serviced one flat). I didn't see any actual filming or Law, although I don't think he was famous at the time. This was in Denmark Hill, London. The film itself is pure torture!

Dosen't IMDB have a locations section?
I travelled around the US last year, and took loads photos of movie locations.
The cemetary from Night of the Living Dead in Evans City, near Pittsburgh, PA. Still looks almost identical to how it did 35 years ago. It was very eery being in the location of one of my favourite films, after seeing the place on the small screen for so many years:

...and loads more - Dawn of the Dead, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street...... I keep meaning to put together a movie location website, but it's a matter of finding the time (and enthusiasm!) to put it all together.
Beautiful picture, CRB, via Garry Cowell - thanks for that.
I was in New York last November and came across the street corner, off Central Park's Eastside, where Gwyneth Paltrow walks back to Michael Douglas at the start of "A Perfect Murder".
.... and I think it's the same street where the lorry oil tanker blows up at the start of "The Marathon Man" (that was on late last night.)
On another USA visit, I found the Safeways supermarket store, that's got a distinctive curved roof, near Fort Mason (?), in San Fransisco, that Steve McQueen drives by (micro-second duration though!!) during THAT car chase in "Bullitt".
Whenever I see these films, and I often do, it really adds to my pleasure to have actually stood at the location.
Just as a starter, the locations I'd like to have visited are :-
Any of the Hertfordshire sets the built for "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band Of Brothers"
The village set they built for "Ryan's Daughter" in S.W. Ireland.
Just to even stand outside the Precinct House they use in "NYPD Blue" would be a dream come true - but I'm not sure if it's a real location.

Nice pictures, CRB and Corrus.
There's some Scottish movie locations here (http://www.scotlandthemovie.com/movies/fintro.html).
Although they aren't mentioned on that site, I'm sure parts of Mary Reilly were shot in Calton Road in Edinburgh and some of Looking After Jojo was shot at the tower blocks in Sighthill, Edinburgh.
Thanks guys, this is really interesting!
Hey- Corrus - I would love to go to the Lighthouse in "The Fog" - can you tell me where it is ?
As for "Ryans Daughter" - I have a picture taken of the beach that one of the scenes was filmed on. I think the set has long since gone - I think I drove past where it was supposed to be and went "er what where'd it go ?". There may be one building left I think.
Another easy scene are the Liverpool St Station scenes from "Mission Impossible" - the phone Tom Cruise calls from has long since gone too though (about 1996)
I was trying to organise a Ghostbusters trip to NYC
I went a few years ago but never managed to see what I wanted to see.
Locations here (http://members.tripod.com/~Adam_P_B/ghostbusters/shooting.html)
In fact this (http://www.fast-rewind.com/) site has some 80's locations on the individual movie pages.

The lighthouse is on a peninsular on the Point Reyes National Seashore in Marin County, about an hour drive north of San Francisco. It's literally in the middle of nowhere along a very long, desolate, wind-y road.
And it really is very very foggy out there!
To get there, you will have to pass through Inverness, which is the town also used in the Fog, on the way to the lighthouse.

Garry, you right about there being this same shot in 25th Hour. It is the same street. Nice pic btw!
Corrus - Brilliant! - I am out north of SF way at the end of March. I will visit for sure! Thanks.
That "Once Upon a Time in America" street has also been used very quickly in "Scent of a Woman"

I saw <i>Roxanne</i> and <i>Housekeeping</i> in the same afternoon and realised they had both been filmed in the same town. (In British Columbia, I think.) Given differences in photographic style, there were even identical shots down the main street!

corrus - good work, excellent picture
hope you don't mind but i've set it as a background (having just watched ouatia just the other day)
is that the brooklyn bridge?
is it difficult to track down these locations?
i'm planning a trip to ny later this year and would love to find some of the scenes from my favourite films but don't want to spend half my trip wandering round like a muppet (and probably getting mugged in the process)
Not very difficult, I know - but spot the location (was here last year):
EDIT
Tried to post some pics, but it wouldn't let me! :(
Brunny78 - first of all you wont get mugged ! NY isnt that bad anymore. haha!
Gary kindly put the photo on for me as I have no webspace. I actuallyl took that photo last week. It is in Brooklyn, ie not Manhattan. The exact name of the road I can't quite remember. I tracked it down by myself, no website etc. The bridge is very distinctive - it's Manhattan Bridge. I knew where to go as you can work out the angle and obviously it has to be near the shore. I took the blue subway line from Manhattan to - I think the stop was called York Street (it's a few after Delancy St). Once out of there you walk down York street and to tell the truth, after you've walked under bridge, keep checking the roads on your right and it won't be long before you recognise the street - its only a few minutes. There's a pretty good coffee shop there now too. Incidentally there is a small park at the bottom where you can go to get a magnificent view of the the Manhattan skyline with the Brooklyn bridge spanning it - that's where all those postcard photos come from.
Saying all that, I wouldn't really want to venture down ther at night!
This link shows a map of that area...

From the southern tip of Manhatten you can easily get to the Helipad seen at the end of The Thomas Crown Affair remake (with Pierce Brosnan). It is clearly marked on most maps. Very cool!
Visited the Ghostbusters Firehouse when I was in NYC last year.
Also watched the movie in Central Park with an intro by Ivan Reitman) for the 150th anniversary of the park, which was an unexpected bonus.
Does anyone try to go to see famous places where movies have been filmed?
I was at the Bar Vitelli in Savoca last week where the Godfather was filmed and sat in the same chair that was featured in the Movie. Also walked up to the church where they were married.
I am hoping to go to the Grand Bazaar this week where The International was filmed.
Anyone else got any favourites?
Oh and I managed to get to Santa Cruz boardwalk a year or two ago to see where The Lost Boys was filmed.

Saw the courthouse in NYC where Barzini was capped and was in the hotel where the Luca Brasi death scene was filmed.

A couple of years ago I did a series of photos of film locations in San Francisco. Unfortunately I only had a very cheap digital camera and no lense options, but here are some of them:

I have an apartment at Lake Como, Italy. When there I always visit Villa del Balbianello. The villa is one of THE most gorgeous places in the world. The following movies (that I know of) have been shot at the villa:
Month by the Lake (whole movie)
Star Wars I & II
007 Casino Royale
Also, at Lake Como, Villa Erba were the setting for:
Luzhin Defence (whole movie)
Ocean´s Twelve
Furthermore, just arrived back from a week in Rome where I visited places where the following movies were shot:
Besieged
Duplicity
Gladiator
Only You
Angels and Demons
Three Coins in the Fountain
Belly of an Architect
PS.
As I love Italy, and have been to Italy 100+ times during my life, I could mention a dozen more locations I have visted where movies were filmed. Most locations has been used after my visits.
Death in Venice
Dangerous Beauty
Much Ado About Nothing
Under the Tuscan Sun
Up at the Villa
My House in Umbria
I´m Not Scared
Wings of the Dove
Where Angels fear to Thread
Talented Mr. Ripley
Ripley´s Game
Beyond the Clouds
Tea with Mussolini
Heaven
Golden Door
Enchanted April
Stealing Beauty
The Thief Lord
+ many, many more.
Just got back from NYC last week where I was finally able to do this...

Next time I head home I'll have to take some pictures .. The various villages and pubs etc in my home area were used (among other places) during the filming of The Wicker Man (1973) version. Like most films the movie locations are actually a hodgepodge of various distant places but some places of note..
Ellen Gowan Hotel in Creetown was the indoor shots of The green man (and there's still a picture of Edward Woodward behind the bar) and which was my local for a while.
The Palm trees etc that E.W. flies over at the opening credits are actually part of Logan botanical gardens (http://www.rbge.org.uk/the-gardens/logan)
The Old Police Station in Kirkcudbright is in there too.. But I forget exactly which fictitious place it portrays.
Burrow Head, Isle of Whithorn is where they actually burnt the wicker effigy.
Not that I'm working for the South west scotland tourist board or anything but it's a great place to visit especially if you like books (http://www.wigtown-booktown.co.uk/) ;)
As a bit of a Bond fan, I've been to quite a few locations recently although sadly none of the more exotic ones!
There are loads all within a fairly short distance of Pinewood studios. In the space of a day I visited:
Stoke Park (in Stoke Poges) where Bond plays golf with Goldfinger.
Stoke Poges Church - visited by Bond at the start of For Your Eyes Only
Black Park Country Park where the Aston Martin chase scene was filmed (also used for the jungle scenes early on in Casino Royale)
Chalfont Park house which was used as the 'Shrublands' Health clinic in Thunderball.
The Saracens Head pub in Beaconsfield which also featured in Thunderball.
