View Full Version : Toggle between RGB/AV1 and S-VHS/AV2?

Can I safely connect my DVD (Lecson) - or my Grundig Digibox for that matter - to the TV (Pan 28PK3) simultaneously and toggle between AV1 and AV2 to check whether I prefer RGB or S-VHS?

To be honest I would've thought this was a no-brainer "yes".
However, one of my manuals seems to address this...but is vague i.e. seems to be warning about connecting though RGB, S-VHS and composite.

Frankly I don't trust myself to see a noticeable difference if I have to fart about with many re-connections and a swift toggle (they can't touch you for it! ;) ) would be a much better "test".

Cheers

Oops - bit sad here...answering my own question.

I set this up and there was no ill effect.

Toggling back and forth with:

Jaws DTS R1
BTILC DTS R1
Spartacus Criterion
Blade R2

I was struck by how much I prefered the S-VHS feed.
The RGB feed looked like it had a blue-green tint to it in comparison to the "clean yet warmer" S-VHS feed.

One downside was that small text e.g. the menus in BTILC became almost unreadable with S-VHS; nice and crisp with RGB.

I can't imagine a problem with also having composite, since that's usually present along with an RGB or S-Video signal anyway (pretty much as a default signal so you get something even if your TV doesn't do RGB or S-Video). But RGB and S-Video share pins on a Scart connector, so it's probably not wise to, say, set the TV to expect S-Video and feed it RGB.

S-Video has extra signal noise over RGB, and that is most noticeable on sharp edges (such as text). My advice about your RGB connection is: try a better cable.

Thanks for reply.

I'm currently using the JVC branded flat, fully-wired, "24k" scarts you can get from (cough) Currys.
I know cost isn't necessarily a determining factor but it was about £12 IIRC.
Am I likely to see a big difference with, say, an Ixos, QED...or indeed B-Tech?
Bugger...I was quite happy with the RGB until I flirted with the S-VHS and I only went that way 'cos I can't do RGB pass-thru' anywhere and wanted best possible signal given my limited options.

It's not that I'm (just :D ) a tight-arse....just that I've bought quite a few of those JVCs recently to wire everything up etc etc.

Gawd - she's gonna kill me

A m8 of mine had the same cable as you and on Text (RED MOSTLY) it looked really poor. He tried my IXOS cable and was well impressed. He went out and bought a VIVANCO which was a bit cheaper but was still better than the JVC cable from curries.

TAKE IT BACK, and get a better cable..
