Just curious - what's the general consensus of opinion on Dolby Pro Logic II for music? I quite enjoy the effect. Is it a big no-no with purists?

Whether it's good enough for purists is neither here nor there. It all comes down to you being happy and not someone else dictating which settings you should use.

FYI, I listen to music in direct stereo mode. It's the only way except when I listen to the odd SACD.

I find DPL2 is less than ideal for music, tbh I find the sound becomes very muddled and the mid-range clarity is cut to ribbons.

Lexicon's Logic7 and Meridian's Trifield processing are supposed to be superb for music though.

Malabbey is right. If you like the sound that PLII gives out then listen to it like that. Everyone has their own opinion.

I usually listen in stereo mode unless the music is actually multi-channel but then that's my preference.

Remember music is to be enjoyed.

I find DPLII Music sounds good with some material, less so with others, so I use it sometimes, but not all the time. I am a fan of multi-channel music though :)

I quite enjoy DPLII but with one caveat; I find I prefer the centre width cranked right up to 5 or 6, so the centre is only just audible and the front soundstage is largely mains only.

I still prefer stereo mostly though.

Agreeing with earlier post that, be happy with what you enjoy and don't worry about how other people listen to music, yes experiment and try different things and if you like it then hey! there you go....

I personally am not a fan of PLII for general listenting. However I find it adds a touch of atmosphere to live recordings....
