... That'll be the day... Made you look though :) But seriously, wouldn't everyone else like to see the greatest film ever made get a bit better treatment than it did? I can almost guarantee that a 2 disc special edition would become an overnight best-seller the minute they announced it! I for one would order it... :) Who else? Let's make a petition!! LOL :D

Wouldn't everyone else like to see the greatest film ever made get a bit better treatment than it did? YES! Pulp Fiction deserves better! - Thank god the SE comes out in January!
PS I am quite happy with my R2 copy of Shawshank (the THIRD best film ever made):D.

and who is Mike ? :)
That would be Mike Sutton....
"The Shawshank Redemption" is, in my oh so humble opinion, total nonsense from beginning to end, nothing more than the packaging of cliches glued together with the sort of sentimental manipulation that might have made even King Vidor blush.
As for it's "director", he couldn't direct traffic without making the cars go at half speed so we can admire how carefully they are constructed. If he ever makes the mistake of adapting King again, the film will presumably last three weeks.
Why do you refer to me yet again by the way - it's very nice of you to give me the excuse for another rant against this overrated rubbish however.
 :D
I did enjoy Shawshank but saw nothing in it that warrant "the greatest film ever made" tag. For one thing, I don't see how anyone can make such a claim unless they've seen every other film that ever existed. It's a good film for sure, and it'd probably come in my top 20, but that's about it (imho of course ;) ).
I prefer SE's on little known films. Stuff like the Star Wars Trilogy, the Tarantino films and Shawshank are so well documented everywhere that there's little left to find out about them.
I'm not especially bothered about the extras on any of the above, although nice transfers would do nicely. The R1 Shawshank is great on the transfer front (Freeman's narration sounds fantastic) - shame about the snapper case though (one reason for Mike to get it then ;))
You had me all excited for a minute then, you swine
I think a Criterion Evil Dead would be a good idea followed by the Matrix

Just out of curiosity, is there any correlation between people who think The Shawshank Redemption is the greatest film ever made and people who've seen A Man Escaped?
I saw the latter only just before I saw Shawshank for the first time, and there's absolutely no contest - Shawshank is certainly very watchable, but, as Mike says, it piles on just about all the standard prison cliches as though they've gone out of fashion - I don't think Darabont leaves a single one out!
By contrast, the Bresson is electrifying throughout, largely because it doesn't resort to that kind of obvious button-pushing - and the climax makes your heart literally leap for joy (whereas at the end of Shawshank my jaw was on the floor as I wondered whether Darabont seriously expected us to believe that prison guards didn't notice... well, those who've seen the film will know what I mean!)

Well it looks like i've started quite a thread here! Glad to see all your opinions, but they won't change mine :) And sure, fair enough, I can't really say it's the geratest film ever made coz I haven't seen every single one :) Not yet anyway... give it a year or so :) hehe.... :D

You'll probably like 'Midnight Express' (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0077928). If you haven't seen it, you can get it for about £8 at dvdoo.dk. :)

Yep, already watched it.... absolutely amazing!! :) Ain't got the DVD yet, just the video... can someone say if the DVD is particularly any good or not? Also Papillon is great and had a decent (if short) featurette as well :)
the cheap reissue r2 is a wierd disc the widescreen version is very bad quality while the standard side is superb? anyone else found this?
