View Full Version : Australia v Sri Lanka [Cricket]
Aussies bowled out for 220 with Muli taking 6 for 59. Interesting side issue both shane Warne and Muli are closing in on Courtney Walsh's all time wicket record of 519. Warne was on 491 before the start of the 3 test series and Muli on 485 (so level now)
Muli taking his wickets in 85 tests as opposed to Warne's 107.
I really think muli doesn't get the adulation he deserves, You could argue he is the greatest bowler ever to play the game. probably a lot to do with the doubters over his action.

In my books Murali is the best bowler currently palying the game. I would hesitat to call him the greatest ever simply because there is so much more test cricket nowdays. He would definately be in the running for the title though. Simply fantastic to watch.

Totally agree :)
I am going to stick my neck on the line and say that Murali will get to 519 wickets first ahead of Warnie mainly because he has been a regular in the team whereby Warne has had to serve that suspension.
Back to the action this could be an interesting series because we all know that Sri Lanka are a force at home. The first day has definitely been won by Sri Lanka and Australia will face an up hill task to get back in the game but don't write those Aussies off just yet ;)
Curious team selection from the Aussies.
Bringing back Lehman (again) and playing Symonds (essentially a one-day hitter) at no.6 in a Test match
To be honest I agree with Lehman selection because when he is on top of his game he can be a destructive batsman, Symonds on the hand is a different matter, I think the only reason he is there is because of his good one day form in the VB series, I have never seen this guy as a test player just a good one day player really.
Whilst we are discussing Australian cricket yesterday was a sad day for all Aussie fans when the Waugh's played their final first class games for their state New South Wales:

And end of a era :(
Massive counter attack from the Aussies. 353 for 3 at lunch - now 150+ ahead.

Australia have turned this one right around. Sri Lanka now need 352 to win. Currrently 3-0.
And after more bowling heroics from Murali, he and Warne are level at 496 wickets each. If Warne bowls well tomorrow on a very helpful pitch, then the 500 should be his.
You've got to hand it to the Aussies. Turning a seemingly losing position into likely victory. Respect is due. :notworthy

What was I saying about Lehman :D
You can never write the Australians off and I can't see anyway Sri Lanka can win this now.
Warne claims 500th Test wicket as the Aussies win by 197 runs.

Correct yet again :D
A superb victory for Australia given the pressure they were under after their poor start to the match. A great personal match for Shane Warne who has become the first spin bowler in history to pick up 500 test wickets, he also took 10 wickets in the match - it must feel like he hasn't been away from the team.

To be honest 3 Aussie batsmen got tons in the 2nd innings and saying Sri Lanka couldn't win after the end of the 4th day was not exactly sticking your neck out
:D
Yeah but I was right though ;)
Ok, I will stick my neck out even further by saying the Australians will win both the test and one day series', howzat :D
A punter who took a gamble on Shane Warne passing 500 wickets 10 years ago nearly missed out on a bumper pay day.
Former professional cricketer Simon Massey shelled out £50 in 1994 at odds of 8/1 that Warne would reach the milestone.
But he lost his betting slip six years ago and gave up any hope of seeing it again.
When he realised the Australian was just two wickets away from the figure in the second innings against Sri Lanka, Massey had one last desperate look and amazingly unearthed it.
Needless to say, the slip didn't leave his sight again until the bookies handed over the small matter of £450 for its safe return.
Massey, now a cricket coach, said: "I can't believe it, I lost the slip when I moved house six years ago and had all but given up finding it.
"I decided to have another look for it on the morning of the achievement and found it after 30 seconds! Someone up there must have a sense of humour!"
Warne's achievement proved to be a costly business for bookmakers Ladbroke's - setting them back more than £10,000.
Spokesman Warren Lush admitted: "Simon is a very lucky punter. We hold our hands up and say that the price we gave out on Shane Warne was a wrong'un, the bookies are now in a spin."
At 8/1 the odds were pretty lousy though.
Australia all out for 120, with Muttiah Muralitharan taking his 500th test wicket. Sri Lanka in reply are 49-4 still 71 runs behind. This is looking like it could be another interesting match with Australia again on the back foot but there are fighting back.

Looks like Australia could have turned this one around too. Sri Lanka finished on 211 thanks to Murali's inspired slogging (43 from 28 balls  ) - a lead of 91, but Australia are now 221-2 with Gilchrist (promoted up the order) on 140no.
And Shane Warne has managed yet another 5-wicket haul. That now makes it 506 to Murali's 500.
I wished Sky would have shown this series but the first test and this one so far would have made great viewing.
I can image the big grin of Murali's face has he hit those three six's. But what can you say about Australia that we haven't before, they just don't know when they are beaten and are very dangerous when they have their backs to the wall. I do reckon they will be disappointed that Sri Lanka manged to post 220 after having them at 88-7.
Good to hear that Gilchrist is back to form though and Martyn is no starting to produce the runs again after a disappointing VB series.
I can't see anything other than a Aussie win in this match after rattling up a large score in this innings.
Looks like this test is following a similar patter to the last one - Sri Lanka gaining the upper hand after the first innings but Australia bouncing back immediately with a gutsy batting display in the second. A target of 352 will be tricky to say the least. :(
Well Sri Lanka have started well because they are currently 160 - 3 with Jayasuriya 96 not out off just 105 balls, so it looks like his playing his normal game and scoring at a one day rate. Much will depend on him and if he can keep going because I would have thought that if Australia can dismiss him then I can't see anyway Sri Lanka can win it, but they are giving it a good go.
Now 204-4 with Jayasuriya on 124.
I still take the Aussies to win though. They rarely slip up when they can sniff victory.
243-6 now with Jayasuriya out for a 131, as I said above it is only a matter of time as the Sri Lankans are still 109 runs behind.

At stumps, Sri Lanka are 301-7 with another 51 runs to get. Australia are undoubtedly favourites, but they shouldn't take anything for granted - especially after the performance of the Sri Lankan tail in the 1st innings.
Vaas looks like the dangerman to the Aussies, if they can get rid of him cheaply then I wouldn't have thought they will have to many problems unless Murli can throw his bat again with some success. Whatever happens you have to applaud Sri Lanka for taking Australia right to the wire.
