View Full Version : Re-releases - DEPRESSING :(

just had a look here (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html) - how depressing is that - so many titles that are being superceeded.
True Lies 5 Star
Goodfellas
Usual Suspects
Raging Bull
Starship Troopers
Tombstone
The Sixth Sense
Jackie Brown
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Unforgiven
The above is a list of titles I currently own that are to be (re)re-released and I will have to decide whether or not to upgrade, specification depending I guess:(
I myself am not too bothered by whizzy jolly new SE's - DVD's very generally tend to keep their value fairly well and I would flog 'em on Ebay and replace with the new ones. If it means a much better version - then yes please!
However, there are a few which probably are just a cash-in, but I personally can't wait for the Goodfellas SE, even if I'd bought the flipper!!
It's all a question of whether the new SE is justified based on the improvements.....

Goodfellas & One Flew Over.. have been crying out for it though.
I've been holding off buying Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction for ages, so the sooner the SE the better for me!

If there's a film I like, but it has an uninspiring disc, then I tend to wait and get a film I like that exists in SE form instead. It's not like my wishlist is running low on entries at the moment anyway.
I know re-releases have always grated with a lot of the DVD buying public (well, us lot anyway) but the manufacturers are in real danger of a consumer backlash if every disc gets re-released every couple of years.
Although when I started collecting I would be prepared to sell on my old copy to fund purchasing an SE, I'm becoming increasingly disillusioned by the process - even if a disc has a bundle load of extras I'll only look at half of them and, at that, only the once.
Suppose we've got the choice tho...and a better disc is a better disc. I hate seeing both sides of an issue
Goodfellas SE - drool.......! Been waiting forever for this!
Also looking forward to a funky version of True Lies and the new SE of Fargo!

Fair enough for new versions of Goodfella's, cockoo's nest ect as their disc were more barren than good jokes at a Bobby Davro gig.
But what exactly is wrong with the 6th Sense, Starship Troopers and Raging Bull special editions that are already out?

Isnt Starship a flipper too ?.

Isnt Starship a flipper too ?.
It was.
The R2's recently been rereleased with all the gubbins from the R1.
It makes me want to spit it happened with videos the directors cut then the directors brothers cut followed by a special edition, I was hoping it wouldn't happen with dvds.
Its just away of making more money out of us poor fools who enjoy our films.
I dont mind upgrading DVD's if they are upgrading to an anamorphic picture or dts sound etc, but wont touch them for extras alone. My region 4 pulp fiction will do me but cant wait for goodfellas and perhaps an nice anamorphic raging bull.
The sixth sense BTW is the same disc packed in a crappy cardboard case. Why?

Sixth Sense will in fact have extra extras, as well as now including a DTS soundtrack.
http://www.dvdfile.com/software/dvd-video/index.html#10232001 (LINK!)
Text from Link: "Also, more news on that Vista Series reissue of The Sixth Sense. We've received updated specs from Buena Vista, and it turns out it will not be a simple repackaging of the previous version. This new edition will be a two-disc set with additional extras to be announced, and the inclusion of a new DTS track. Stay tuned for full specs..."
The Sixth Sense wouldn't really benefit from a DTS soundtrack anyway.......the Matrix would though.
Starship Troopers got reissue on R2 as a non flipper months ago.
Whilst on the subject of re-issues, anyone know anything about "The Last Seduction" (Linda Fiorentino)?

I concur - the current R2 of One Flew Over is attrocious!! Smearing, grain, print damage and incredibly soft. Most of the picture problems are unsurprising as with the bitrate graph of my Sony player on, the highest I noticed was under 5Mbits even during heavy movement. Though bought for £8 in the WB Play sale so I wont complain too much :)

At least with DVDs we get additional extras unlike the poor sorry fools who re-buy every release of the Star Wars or Aliens series on VHS :D
There are some people I've spoken too who moan about re-releases but to be fair:
1) They are usually announced 6 months to a year beforehand meaning its easy to flog any existing version
2) Most importantly, re-releases make the studios a lot of money, which remember is the whole point and reason for these things to ever exisit in the first place!
By far, the most exciting is The Usual Suspects with reportedly:-
Commentary
2 Documentries (hopefull one being the scene by scene breakdown doc that was on the VHS)
Unseen Footage
Isolated Score
and of course, the obligatory....etc
It's been crying out for it since the invention of the format...
Funny, you don't hear people complaining when their DVD player, PC, or software is out of date after 6 months, and replaced by a newer version.
If you are not happy with the contents of a current DVD, and you think that a better version may be released in the future, don't buy it!
If you are happy with the current version, don't bother upgrading.

What...you mean the exact same commentary as the current DVD? :D ;)
It was just the film with commentary on top - it had never been done before on VHS (to my knowledge), so they just called it a scene-by-scene breakdown instead of non-optional audio commentary.
I agree it is annoying when a good dvd like Raging Bull, but people can't complain when a bare bones disc, such as Goodfellas, gets a re-release. People should be very wary buying bare bones, because it is almost certain to get a far superior re-release.

Good news for me cos I'd don't give a gnat's ass about extras so I'll buy everyone's 'old' DVDs :D

The most infuriating thing about the whole situation is that, with the massive catalogues most distributors could call on, they choose to go on and on and on re-re-reissuing the same relative handful of titles instead of giving folk a first go at some other (brilliant) stuff.
Does anyone know if there will a SE of grossepoint blank for region 2 in the foreseable futuree ever.

I only own one of those at the moment and that's Starship Troopers which is a flipper and is long overdue replacing. I've been holding off buying the Tarantino films because there were rumours ages ago they were being revamped.
Hmmm... I have Reservoir Dogs (Limited edition) - won't bother upgrading
One flew over the Cuckoos Nest - may upgrade if OAR
aqnd sixth sence - won't bother

The existing R1 & R2 versions of 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' are both in the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio - why would they change it for a special edition?
BTW, the special edition of Cuckoo's Nest will most likely feature the commentary track and documentary from the previous laserdisc.
Oh OK, I thought that it was in 4:3 I must be getting confused with something else.

It says 4:3 on the back of the case - typical Warner Bros mis-labeling :D
