I was not a big fan of the original but I know many of you were.

Graphically, it does look pretty smart though. I'm holding out my order for reviews from you guys first.

So has anyone played this yet? :suspect: :D

Nope I'm waiting for Pal this time

Mainly cos I expect to be on Multiplayer a lot, it looks really hot. As does the Single Player.

Am a little worried about difficulty though, reports abound of them "dumbing it down" after the insane difficulty of the first. Bad thing IMO the first was rock hard and good for it, the last level was insane. Whether they will or not who knows, but the extra levels released for the first were dissapointingly easy, good fun but with little challenge. Doesn't bode too well for this IMO. Should still be a cracker though, can't wait

I did not think it was that hard, just time consuming, I have never enjoyed sneaking about in other games before, but I did in SC for some reason.

I thought Splinter Cell was excellent, it still looks amazing even today and the difficulty was about perfect imo.

I'm looking forward to SC2: PT.

I think the PAL version is out before the NTSC version. :suspect:

Matt KB

I'm getting seriously excited over the multiplayer. Basically it's only 2 vs 2 but looks absolute quality, sneaking around etc. And you can even listen in on the other teams conversations :D

with a little help from kelloggs branflakes of course!

cant wait for it- loved the first one - second best game on xbox after HALO.

Dunno, the last level was rock. Not impossible though.

Check out this multiplayer footage of Splinter Cell 2 - The Mercenaries - Availble from IGN here (http://xbox.ign.com/articles/496/496732p1.html).

Geoggy
07-03-2004, 12:38
looks top notch

if you are a merc in multiplayer it is in first person- if you are a spy its 3rd person.

cant wait for this now

Matt KB
07-03-2004, 12:53
I'll leave it up a bit longer then ;)

Yeah Geoggy got it nailed basically. As a spy (ala Fisher) you play in 3rd person, night vision, thermo goggles, electric stunners, can only kill in close combat.

Mercenaries are 3rd person, heavy firepower, tripwires etc, motion detectors and electromagnetic detector (see whe Night Vision is in use etc)

IGN did a good report on this here (http://xbox.ign.com/articles/496/496732p2.html). That's where I got the vids from - they are available for non Insiders but at a lower resolution.

Love the fact you can use gadgets to listen in on the others conversation. There's a thing at the moment so only a few details can be released about it. :D Looks so cool.

First impression - looks amazing, still suffers from that thing where the top refreshes slightly before the bottom which is a shame.

Controls have changed - left click sticks you to a wall, A is reload, white allows you to WHISTLE now which I'm sure will be useful. Gotta go learn stuff now though :(

Got this pre ordere from play. Cant wait to play it the first one was the hardest game I ever finished, that CIA level drove me nuts. The multi looks ace as well, I also heard that when the spy sneaks up on the merc the voice comms cut to the guy that you are going to kill and u get to say something before u kill him. sweeet

played this the last couple of nights myself, damn good game, fans of the first will be pleased

as for crappy beta, well if this is crappy, then i cannot wait for the "non-crappy" one ;)

anyways, few new features added that make it better..like the fact you can no longer run and hide 2 feet from your enemy who has spotted you..he no longer goes "hmm..must have been a fat cat knocking over milk bottles again" but instead puts a few rounds in your chest!

the red dot on your aim is good too, although last night it got me caught out, as they react to it!

the multiplayer element is good, very creepy environments, a good atmosphere, good maps (big maps). The fps bit is done well..if only the one player game allowed you to alternate views :(

role on the 26th!

Surely you mean GC original, seeing as the GBA SP and GBA versions would be the same :p

Just started playing PT tonight, seems pretty good if you liked the first one. Haven't got that far into it though.

Also tried the new Tenchu game - not impressed, still suffers from the jerky camera of previous versions... The first one is still the best for me.

Gamecentral did a review yesterday and a whole feature on the xbox live stuff. Sounded utterly cool and if the xbox was smaller I'd consider getting one now especially if Pro Evo 3 was XBL. I'm seriously considering getting an xbox 2 and if It's compatilble with GC2 in some way it might be my only purchase

Don't be put off by the size, use it's big and bulky but the PS2 is longer and the Cube is taller. Size is a poor reason to miss out IMO ;)

Oops, meant 4 not 3. XB1 is taller than the PS2 and far wider than the cube. It's by far the bulkiest console. Then there are the other reasons

No but you have to look at it (ugly) and you have to put it somewhere. My cube fits nicely under the desk and the xbox would be in the way. The xbox 2 is probably going to be a bit smaller. Of course if the GC2 has a decent online thing and some of the xbox games I'd only need one console.

I really don't know if I should get this for the PC or Xbox....decisions decisions....

I never played the original on the xbox so I don't know what the controls are like, but I would assume that in bits where you have to aim, the PC is best due to the mouse...does the PC version have multiplayer?

Matt KB
20-03-2004, 18:42
The aiming is done well on the Xbox version, it's not tricky and very responsive due to the analogue sticks. Also, if you get the Xbox version you can join in the fun on Live :D

Might have already been mentioned but PC Gamer gave SC2 around (85% - or there abouts). One of the criticisms in the "things it's not" was something like polished, or finished i can't remember which.

the pistol is tricky, I couldnt understand why I couldnt shoot out lights, only after switching to the infa-red crosshair you notice how wobby the aim is. Not a fault, its the way its supposed to be, maybe Sam just loses his nerve with a little gun. :D

Well I have not really heard anything about the PC version, TBH I thought SC2 was going to be xbox exclusive for a couple of months like the first one, until about a week when I looked it up.

I don't know if PC SC2 has multiplayer or what kind of modes it has....

For xbox I was actually talking about using XBLink as it is free. Live seems like a con to me.

But ultimately I want whichever version if best, I've not had my xbox long, and so far have only played ninja gaiden, i don't like the idea of FPS on a console, I gave halo a try and I hated it, I need my mouse, and it seems to me that in situations where i need to be precise (like shooting lights, or headshots) and I need to do it fast, that the mouse is best.

Heck, I didnt like Goldeneye on the N64 either.

Anyone know the cheapest option for purchase on launch day? I know amazon have it for £30 and supposedly they send it the day before release. I've got a £5 off voucher for HMV if anyone knows what there prices are like.

I've ordered from Amazon, the Estimated date is the weekend but they have to say that as you're not supposed to have it before street date, although if you pre-order they'll ship as soon as they receive it supposedly.

As for lag, I dont think they'll be any. Ubisoft have really nailed it with Rainbow 6 3, I can host up to 8 people at once inc. me with no lag, but I've player on both 10 and 16 people servers that have been full and run fine. SC2 has more detail than Rainbow but I'm confident there won't be any lag.

Ubisoft have really nailed it with Rainbow 6 3, I can host up to 8 people at once inc. me with no lag, but I've player on both 10 and 16 people servers that have been full and run fine. SC2 has more detail than Rainbow but I'm confident there won't be any lag.

Really looking forward to it.

I agree. On RS6, when you enter a 4 man 'Mission' or 'Terrorist Hunt' there is no lag - of course unless you're playing with someone from Oz or someone has a slow connection, then you may see a little.

So, seeing as they've limited these game types to 2vs2 it SC2 should be lag free.

Will this thread be renamed Splinter Cell 2 : Pandora Tomorrow Tomorrow on Thursday ? ;)

I intend to pick this up from Game on Friday, along with my shiny new Crystal Xbox :)

Looks like there'll be plenty of Forumites on Live with it then, shouldn't be a problem finding some decent folks to play it with :)

There's a single player demo on XB monthly and one on XBox world. Does anyone know if that's a multiplayer one?

I was wrong about the SC2 demo, it's only a trailer but they did have a SC1 demo. Took a while to get used to (I'm used to the A button being fire on the cube) but everything's laid out perfectly.

How easy is it to cancel with play. I don't want to end up paying twice?

I had a quick bash on Rainbow six 3 and the controls were a lot more complex. I also found it hard to move and aim at the same time

Matt KB
23-03-2004, 23:09
Rainbow takes a lot of getting used to mate, mess about with the sensitivity controls. I think mine are on 4 for both X and Y axis.

If you see the little X on outstanding orders, you can cancel with play. Just click it.

Thanks Matt, I'll give that a try.

Now ordered from play. I'll see what happens tomorrow and Thursday and I'll cancel one of them.

I've now signed up for Xbox Live and my tag is camaj (is it case sensitve?). I've added Matt to my friends list

The stuff I listed earlier:
1 x Scart with Optical Output
1 x Optical Lead
1 x Controller
2 x Controller S
1 x Official Microsoft Xbox Live! (unused and still has the 12 months subscription free)
Games:
Project Gotham Racing
Colin Mcraey Rally 3
Midnight Club 2
Dead Or Alive 3
Dead Or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball
House Of The Dead 3
Toca Race Driver

Was £130 inc. p&p. I thought it was a decent price. The only downside is I've just tried the code and it's invalid so it seems like the guy has stitched me up (possibly inadvertantly)

Also looks like some free maps are on there way for SC2 very soon

I entered the code under subscription in the xbox live thing on the dashboard.

No virgin near me since they closed the brent cross one down. There's one in Watford and used to be one in stevenage but I really can't be bothered to go all that way. I don't know about mint but I can't see any damage.

If you enterred the trial one that would show an expiry date on the dashboard (31/03/04??).

You can then enter a Yearly sub code at anytime which will just extend the expiry date.

Re the GAME thing. I doubt they'll accept that.

You go back to them saying the code is used, they'll want to replace it with a new one. It would look blatantly obvious if you returned a scratched code and wanted a refund - or wanted to swap it for a Live game.

That's terrible. It's no wonder that genuine customers that have a real reason for taking things back to other stores are turned away. It's due to abuse like this.

The only time I've taken games back to game is if I didn't like it and even then it's been once or twice.

It annoys me how people take advantage of good customer service.

Yep it's a pain but he's been screwed anyway hasn't he? He bought that set and it's clearly already been used. They sold it to him.

Thinking about it, don't even need to buy a new one, he could just take the old one back and tell them this is what it was when he opened it - the code was already in use/not valid. Dunno why I thought of buying a new one for the same reasoning.

None taken. Clearly he's got to get a refund/replacement Live set from somewhere as the code is muffed. I assumed that's where he got the set from, if not Virgin would do - they have a good returns policy, that's where the buy a new one comes in - sure it's taking the mick but they'd get it back anyway. Capitalism never loses out in these situations. GAME would resell it anyway under new shrink wrap :oh-hum:

Xbox Live bug will be corrected soon

A bug where the Xbox game crashed if you rested ten seconds on the "optimatch" option will soon be resolved. The bug does not prevent players from playing online, and it does not occur during gameplay. Therefore we expect that players will still enjoy playing Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow while we look into resolving this issue.

Just finished the first mission. Was well easy. Mainly because health points are absolutely everywhere.

There's also that terrible thing where the top refreshes slightly before the bottom. That make sense? I'm sure people will know what I mean. It's everywhere. Doesn't really effect the game too much, but at first you really notice it.

This is on normal difficulty btw. Maybe it's cos I played the first one to death, or because it's part level 1, part training level.

Looks awesome apart from that refresh problem though.

Yeah i've noticed that. It's kind of like playing a PC game without the vertical-sync turned on.

Haven't quite got the hang of multiplayer yet but i'm sure it'll be great once i'm used to it. Plus most the people i've played have been foreign so it's hard to communicate.

Damn XMCC clan seem to have gotten the hang of it quite quickly. Got taken from behind :norty: about 3 times in the space of a minute!

I've noticed during the tutorial that the controls are slightly different for spies on this as well which I imagine would take a bit of getting used to.

Just been doing the training missions, on the Merc one I thought there were spys around so I was going back and forth looking for them only to find a tunnel I'd missed that lead to the exit :cuckoo:

Read the manual? Noob!!! ;)

Even though I'm currently really crap at multiplayer I'm really enjoying it. I haven't actually won anything or neutralised anything yet :help: My main objective has been to attach a spy bullet!

My first game was in the cinema. Got to the screen and then to the door when a merc charged round the corner. That was me dead. Then I was a merc and I spotted a spy running for a ladder I'd found earlier. I badly tried to follow him up and eventually made it. I tried shooting him (God that was loud!) and he threw a grenade, ran behind me and broke my neck. :brickwall

Then we tried the office block level. Several times I got mown down trying to disable a laser beam. Another time I dropped down onto one of the bridges and I could see the torchbeam on an adjacent bridge. I hid behind a pillar and the merc starting doing a sweep and I was bricking it. Then I either nipped to the opposite side of the corrodor or he became more casual and he passed by. I sat there waiting and he came back and started firing! Not at me though, randomly at the roof  He turned and went the other way and I was trying to follow him but he got away.

Is it me or are some of these maps really buggy. I've fallen through the scenery a few times esp on that last one where I was hanging off the bridge but midair on the "safe" side.

I wasn't using a mic either which was a shame because I wanted to tell them how close I almost came. They got annoyed at that too :(

I finally got to playing the PC demo by hosting games myself. I don't know how well the others were doing for connection speed! Is there any way to see who's playing, team layouts + ping etc when you're in game? (The same kind of info you see when you press F1 in UT2004).

Other than that it plays cool. Bit tricky to get the hang of, and I haven't successfully used the microphone yet, hopefully will get the hang of it all soon though.

Okay update.... this game is absolutely great fun. I had someone on my team earlier who was also using a mic, and it enhances the game so much more.

I'm getting the hang of sneaking around the mercs now, but I have real trouble neutralising the devices. It seems to take ages for the Use option to appear.. anyone else have this problem?

Also, for other PC users, how does grabbing / knocking someone down work. As far as I can see, I have 3 'action buttons', Q, E and Shift.. Q I haven't used for anything so far, is that what I use?

camaj
27-03-2004, 05:06
On the XboX you use the main action key to grab from behind.

I made some kills in the end and got a bit more into it. I also pluged the mic in. Never done a voice game before so I didn't want to jump straight in. Sadly the first lot were the ones that I should have used voice for.

I forgot to mention too that there was a girl (sounded female anyway) on my side who ended up shooting me dead. I did shoot another team mate once but nonfatally. Also I was setting up a mine when someone came up behind me. I got killed and it was only after I died that I realised someone else had died too.

What was annoying though was thinking you were clear and then having someone grab you and spining and still not seeing them  They were all americans too

I played the MP demo with a friend, i was merc, i killed him 3 times, twice with my grenades.

Then I went spy and boy does it suck. I could hardly get in a window before I got detected even when I shot the laser detecting things, then i did not know how to disable the objective. I shot him lots but it just electrocuted him for about 1 sec and then he would shoot me again.

I really am not sure if I should get the PC version as well, I got the xbox version to play at uni, but now it is holidays I can play the PC version.....

Bah.

It is a lot harder for Spies when you first start playing. Mercs are much easier to pick up and play, due to the FPS familiarity of them. I played the first SC plenty but when you first start as Spies online it's quite tricky to get the hang of things. I'm getting a bit better now, and it's getting much easier to give the Mercs the run around. It's great fun just hiding around a corner and watching them run everywhere looking for you after you've set off an alarm :D

Totally, there is definitely an art to being the spy plus you have to learn the different routes in, out and around the levels.

Mercs have the run of the floor in each level, it is the nooks, crannys, rafters, vents, pipes and tunnels that the spies need to make use of.

The Warehouse level is bar far my favourite level, so many routes and dark spots. However, the Museum is the Spies worst nightmare, well lit and full of motion sensors and laser trips. Extremely tough.

What makes it for the spy is going up against real intelligence (or lack thereof ;) ) in the Mercs. I didn't like SC too much because you couldn't make even the slightest, minute fart of a sound without the AI being imediately alert, hunting you down. And the worst thing -once they had spotted you they could always find you in the dark with out problem. The darkness just didn't work all the time.

This doesn't happen on-line in SC2 with real people. They can spot you but if you move and sit quietly in a dark corner they can't find you. Darkness really is your friend. Mercs can literally brush past you and not see you. It's awesome.

This is also the first game where I'm loathe to give my secrets away too. I've found routes and paths that my friends haven't found yet, if I disclosed them that's the advantage gone when they're the Merc. :D

I've really got the Hospital level sussed now. Just been playing it on home LAN, but there's only 3 of us with good enough comps to play it, so it's 2 vs 1 atm. My best achievement so far was winning when I was the only Spy vs 2 Mercs :)

Just finished the single-player campaign. It's maybe slightly too short (I got around 20 hours of raw playing time out of it I reckon), but the gameplay, design work and animations are absolutely stunning. I really thought the story was interesting and I got immersed in it.

I'm not a fan of stealth based games at all, but I found Splinter Cell 2 fantastic on the whole.

Best bit so far for me is on the 7th level....

Where it's pouring with rain, dripping off everything, take out the blokes faffing with the bike, then you overhear about the lightning and night vision.... absolute class. It's so good, I actually feel really odd, like I should be wearing a coat or something. Fantastic.

The v-syncing prob seems to be fine after level 1 as well. :)

Options - Friends - Highlight Friend - Send Invite.

You might not be able to send someone an invite if you have a pending invite from them. Cancel their invite and you should be able to send them one.

You probably didn't join Taranatar's game quick enough and he closed the room.

BTW Sorry for not joining you Taranatar - was already in a room of 4. Such a shame you can't have more in a game.

What is suprising in this game is the patchy voice comms in both the lobby and the game - the lobby is actually quite bad. Considering you could hear 16 peeps in one RS3 lobby clearly I'm suprised.

camaj
28-03-2004, 04:36
Thanks morton, I figured it out in the end. Mainly by joining sessions. You can always leave a game to join another if you choose.

There was a lot of break up with us too and playing as the merc was really jerky and I found that I'd run alongside stairs instead of up and down them :brickwall Pausing my d/l seemed to fix that.

I did okay I though, I'm still working out how to play. I've been so close to a merc but couldn't grab them. I'll try the manual again.

Also I was thinking about what you said earlier when I first heard about the game. That is half the game is being good and the other half is knowledge of strategies. If you let people in on your strategies you've lost a large advantage. So I was wondering if you (or someone) would like to start a 2 player clan with me or maybe we could start a forums clan. The only problem is who ever I team with would have to keep ideas within the group.

Any thoughts?

Re: Voice comms.

Lots of people seem to be noticing this, apparantly it goes balls up when someone joins/leaves. Once you have your 4 people, try unplugging the headset connecter then plugging it back in. That's the (temporary) solution some people over at the Ubisoft forums are suggesting.

That's the guy, you were asking him whether the both of you should do something so he sounded like someone you knew

LewisR and I played against this right stuck up pair of northerners so we left and I was even thinking of going back into the dashboard to invite the guy we played earlier when he popped back. He gave a great game and we ended with a really tense game, where I think LewisR must have passed me by a few times. I think it got my heart beating faster than a good jog :help:
