Bit late getting this I know but just gotta say what a bloody great game this is. Cruising through the streets of Hong Kong at midnight whilst listening to ambient music on the radio is just awesome. Also really like the wide sweeping roads in Moscows Red Square.
This is a game i've been eager to buy ever since it's release. Does the game have customisable controls? As much fun as Midtown Madness 3 is i still have trouble using the triggers as accelerator/brake and feel a similar method of control for PGR2 will lessen the enjoyment factor, so to speak.
My friend uses the right joystick for accelerate/brake so yes.

I recently got an Xbox with this game, and I have to say, it's blown me and my dyed-in-the-wool Grand Tourismo friend away.
I absolutely love the trigger arrangement, and the fact there's no stupid 'handicap catchup' system in play. Pure, hardcore driving till 3am is what it's all about.
Consider me converted, GT4 is going to have to be something special to beat this...

You need analogue acceleration/breaking for this game really. Could get away with it, using the right stick. Not sure if you could assign face buttons, if you could.... would it be worth it?
Well the face buttons are analog too, but I imagine that the triggers are the buttons of choice for this sort of use.

Which buttons might these be? :suspect:
Personally use the triggers myself, didn't for the first game for some reason but I've come to realise you def need the analogue brake.

The triggers have show up the biggest problem with the PS2 controls for driving. The inability to "left foot brake" while still on the throttle. The PS2 buttons are pointless as analogue, only the steering wheel gives you the posibility to do it on GT3 (which is why it's my prefered method of control).
I can't believe I missed out on this game for so long....

You also need the analogue accelerator too - just try and floor the Stingray in the wet without slamming into a wall! Feathering is the key to Platinum times...
I've got the analogue accelerator, haven't got the stingray yet

In that case be prepared to tap into a deep and prolonged vein of cursing that you never knew you had ;) To say it handles like a boat would be too kind, but you'll need it to get Gold/Platinum... It does get easier after a while though, honest!

A, B, X, Y are analogue but only few games use them as such IIRC. Pointless having buttons as analogue, as GT showed on PS2 - you need to push it ******* hard to get anywhere. 151 different measures of pressure? I could manage about 3.
For some reason I prefer using the analog buttons (X/Y etc) for Colin McRae 3 & 4, they work quite well in that game (at least, for me). I think the reason is I used a PS pad to play Colin 2, so I was just used to that control method for a rally car.

Didn't realise that.. I thought the PS2 buttons were described as pressure sensitive rather than analogue as such?

That's it, but who's splitting hairs? Same difference more or less :D
On Thursday I finallly completed all to silver  . Not sure if it's worth the time to try platinum though. I think the cone challenges may be beyond me.

Without a doubt, i just have trouble using the triggers as accelerate/brake.
I bought this game last night and thankfully there is an alternate method; Right stick for acc/brake and the triggers for the gear change. It goes a little way to replicating the same feel i'm used too with GT3 on PS2 although using analogue triggers to change gear isn't ideal.
Good game though, I haven't delved deep enough to see if it's a GT3 beater but I guess that's another thread altogether, much like which pad for driving games PS2 :dork:

I love this game too but the American Muscle Car series almost drove (hohoho) me to distraction.
Describing most of those cars as skips with truck engines would be too kind..
I've nearly finished it, what do you have to do to unlock the other cars ? I have mostly gold medals, do you need all platinum to unlock the TVR ?
All gold = Mecedes CLK-GTR
All plat = TVR Cerbera Speed 12
The Merc has a slower top end than the Porsche GT1 but better accelaration and handling. The TVR blows away every car in the game, but unless you're playing against other TVRs driven by similarly skilled people, it's not really woirth it as you'll win by miles! Plus you also get accused of cheating, as lots of people have used the Action Replay to get it.
The Ultimate series cheats like a mofo :p

Haven't played this in a while - must dig it out.
I like the one on one races - take the opponent's back end out on the first bend and you're away :)
...kind of. Over at the Bizarre Creations (http://www.bizarrecreationsforum.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3285) website.
At least we know it's coming, and in the not too distant future.
What's this DLC they speak of?
DownLoadableContent - hopefully some new tracks and perhaps even a city or two, as well as new cars.
Not that it matters much, most races will still be Ultimates on KGB Corner :searchme:

Unforunately, that's the one thing they don't mention. So it's a 'Cup half full/empty' situation. :D
I doubt it will be a new City, it took their teams a year to do each city, they're not going to do that much work for free - unless of course they charge for the download.
It's more likely to be cars so that you can spend those extra Kudos tokens earned on-line.
Ultimates on KGB corner? Haven't done that for a while, the guys I race with usually let each player choose a car and track in turn. Works well and keeps the variety. (although I usually choose the 360 Spider :D and Lothian wotsit road long etc...)
I hope they do a Marcos LM600 car for download, that would be sweet.

there was rumours that paris was allready built into the game! dunno how true it is tho.
apparently some ppl took the game apart and found paris locked inside or something lol :).
if there were doing city's london would be brilliant to get.

I agree, if they did do a city it would probably be chargeable. There are always those rumours though, esp. when there are music tracks already on the disk that have Paris and LA in their filenames...

I usually end up doing this (or variations of it) when playing with friends, but when doing an optimatch you do notice a lot of people on the same handful of tracks.
Any of you lot up for a race this evening? I usually go on after 10pm, gamertag is r1skbreak3r, feel free to add me to your friends list

I've completed all courses on silver and it's given me new cars for my troubles but I don't seem to be able to select them when doing the Kudos challenges. I assume these cars help make getting gold & plats easier?

Weird.
I've been playing PG2 off the HD ever since I first got it and I've completed all the tracks up to silver like previous mentioned and now the game crashes and freezes within 3 minutes of loading it up.
Legal Opium? It is on Live. I even dreamed about it last night. :searchme:
I may be slightly controversial in saying this (and I haven't played on Live) but in terms of the one-player game I still prefer the original Metropolis Street Racer (PGR2's Grandad) on Dreamcast.
I enjoyed the way you only had a few garage slots and the kudos you earned was linked to which cars you had earned it with so when you wanted a new car you had to choose a car that didn't have too much kudos associated with it.
And the special races that earned you extra cars, garage slots, etc for coming first if you had the right car, class, or if you entered at the correct time of day depending on the city!
I got my DC last April and played MSR continously to completion before I brought Project Gotham. I was seriously disappointed as although the racing is on a par the rest felt dumbed down.
PGR2 is a definite improvement and I'm looking forward to it when I get Live but the MSR 1-player is where its at for me.

Well I have just ordered this from amazon along with the live subscription for £50 as mine runs out at the end of the month. So hope to have a race with u lot some time next week.
That last race is driving me  only need that one for all gold. Really bugs me when cpu cars drive into you and you spin all over the place and they continue unaffected.
I don't like Nurburgring, I think they should have just stuck to city street racing IMO as I think thats what the MSR/PGR series is all about.

I saw you online earlier mate but by the time I'd put PGR2 in the Xbox you'd gone offline :(
I agree with Nurburging. It's too big on the game, and if they wanted a track for track racing, there is much much better out. Maybe could of used the test track?
Yeah, been on it trying to grab those medals :D Yaffle sent me an invite on PGR but whenever I tried to join it said server no longer available.

" Racing on Par" MSR had lots of slowdown - although losing the real timezone setting was a real shame as that and the radio was so cool in MSR :) .
Of the series, I prefer PGR1 in 1 player game mode and feel it has the best graphics as what's the point of adding more detail if only to drop the frame rate to 30 fps and cause all sorts of motion blur.
All top games in their own right though:clap:

I used to get that problem with certain people until I changed my router config to add the xbox IP address as the DMZ. It fixed it instantly, so worht a try if you're going through a router...
As for the Nurburgring, it's a difficult track if you're not used to it, but you do get a sense of accomplishment when you get it right! I do hate it at times though, it's definitely my weakest track and I rarely get a clean race, messing up at least 2-3 times... It's good for cat and mouse games though ;)
M@rtin I got your game request. Sorry, but I was in the middle of doing an arcade car challenge that a mate at work sent me. Next time hopefully
Thing I hate most is if a CPU car skids off it seems to get back on the track and away again faster than you could ever manage. Also do they deliberately barge you sometimes? I'm sure they do!

Yeah and it's made worse by the fact that the CPU cars seem to follow a pre-defined route which creates a rather bizarre situation where everybody thinks nothing about writing off their Porches and Ferraris at 135mph.

No worries, I ignored invites for nearly two weeks when I was chasing all the Platinum medals :) Still working my way through the arcade mode - I've done the races, just got the timed runs and cone challenges to do, but the incentive isn't that great! I tend to try one per session, to warm up before I go online...
Argh I don't like this, I am not a big fan of racing games, I get bored going around the same track in a crappy car and I always crash at corners....
Also i can't hear the radio because of the engine, is there a way to just listen to the radio?

pretty sure you can alter the volumes separately in the options menu, so turn up the music and turn the effects/engine down.
i hope you guys will still be playing this when i get a job and can therefore afford live and broadband, had a months free broadband trial and the free live trial and just played this online constantly.
was surprised at the driving on live, being used to the crazy CPU cars which i ram at every opertunity to get rid of them, i was thinking i better not barge anyone off, but most of the drivers i raced were worse than the cpu ones. personally i like my driving smooth and fast. what do you guys drive like on live ?

I like to try for a clean race, a bit of blocking is essential, and bumping often can't be helped (no matter how much people say you're being dirty - Dan I'm looking at you :p).
Some people don't have a clue though, just drive head first into corners to try make you crash and therefore gain a lead. If I'm hosting I tend to kick those jokers. It's PGR2. Not Destruction Derby.

sounds like a lot of the people i raced, good job they couldnt hear what i was saying ;) and its good to hear you take action against them
Tbh mate once you get a good friends list and people you know, you have so many total class racing. You have to expect a fair about of rubbing though. And I have a mic so they can hear what I'm saying :D

I can't see myself not playing this for a long time, it's still my most played game on Live. Like matt said, just join a few races and add the good drivers to your friends list, then you just end up racing with a few good friends and have a laugh as well as good racing.
BTW, saber - if you're crashing at every corner then you're not braking enough or braking too late. Use the dark tyre marks on the corners as braking indicators - take the line that they follow round a corner, and start braking when they start. It's better to brake too much and go round slower than you could, than going round too fast, hitting the side and losing all your momentum. Also download a few ghosts if you have Live and watch what they do - it's best to pick the hot lap/timed run ones for that as they aren't spoiled by kudos whores...

After playing it some more and discovering the tire marks and using them as guides I am now much better.
I wonder if I should save up my tokens for the l33t ferraris and stuff, or buy the best car I can for the class I am currently racing in.
Depends how you are playing it. My friend did a few series and then did some arcade ones to get enough tokens to buy some ultimate cars and then raced online with those. I did each series in turn always buying the best car each time at the start as you easily rack up enough tokens. I ended up finishing to silver much quicker than he did. I also had the best car in each class available to race online quicker. FWIW here's the list of "best" cars from one of the mags which did an in depth review:
Recommended cars (most to least important):
Compact Sports: Focus RS (6), Clio V6 (1)
Sports Convertible: Boxster S (6), S2000 (1)
Coupe: BMW M3 (7), Audi S4 (1)
Sport Utility: Cayenne (all)
Pacific Muscle: Skyline (7) Evo (2), Subaru (1)
Roadster: Cobra (all)
Classics: 275 GTB (all)
Sports Coupe: TVR Tamora (all)
American Muscle: Corvette Sting Ray (13), Camaro SS (1)
Super Cars: Delfino (13), TVR Speed 6 (1)
GT: 575M (all)
Track Specials: M12 (14), Stradale (3)
Extreme: F50 (10), XJ220 (4), GT2 (2), 959 (1)
Ultimate: Enzo (9), Koenigsegg (9)
A strange list as they have included one unlockable in it (Delfino).
The number in brackets is the number of Kudos events the car is best for.

The best thing to do is get the best car in the class as per Reecie's list.

For the Super Car class, don't stress trying to get Platinums from the start. Complete the tasks using the TVR to at least Steel standard.
When you have completed the KWS upto Steel standard you will unlock the Delfino - then you can revisit amd whup the Super Car class with ease.
I think the Delfino beats the Speed camera challenge by about 15mph!

As for car collecting, the first time I went through on mostly silver, buying 1-3 different cars per class to see what was available. I then went back and did Gold then Platinum, filling in the car gaps as I went. I've now got all the cars and about 150 tokens left over if they decide you need them to get the downloadable stuff.

Sorry I had to duck out from your room this afternoon mattkbishop.
I was well annoyed, leading by 5 secs on the last lap of that flipping long Sydney track when my Mum starts knocking on the front door!!
I tried to finish the race but she'd knocked 3 times. :o
That was one dirty room though, the first race was like a destruction derby! No-one used their brakes! I was pummellled from about 2/3 to last in 3 corners! (I don't think you were one of the culprits though :suspect: ). Every time I made a place up the git behind me would 'ride me' into the bend/barrier.
Lockstocked enjoyed it though - it was more his style. ;)

Wasn't me mate :D I tried to kick most of the dirty buggers, bumper cars is no fun. Bumping is inevitable, I don't do it deliberately (blocking them from passing is ok IMO until they're by side, then don't deliberately push them off). Much prefer good clean racing :)
Still havent played this game  Might have to visit gamestation tommorow .
M@rtin - sorry about the other night, you kept joining and getting cut off almost straight away, dunno what was happening :(
Yeah I know, it seems to happen on PGR2 from time to time. All I get is "Game session is no longer available", whereas you see me join, but with no voice icon, then disappear immediately. I've heard that it could be a router problem, but I tried a few things like setting the xbox up as the DMZ, port forwarding, etc and it was having none of it!
I went on Race Driver 2 instead and got rather annoyed with it!! Damn that game is unforgiving, get onto a run-off area and it takes you half a race just to get back on the track :brickwall
I played Rallisport Challenge 2 today and that is really excellent, I think that's a must for Live play!

Who's got all platinum then? My hands hurt today after playing non-stop at work all weekend and getting 0 work done. Only done all silver, is it worth going all through it again, I can see some of the later cone challenges being a bit nails.
lol, someone's spotted easy prey ;)
No I'm not Dan. I only really get gaming time at work these days, so lives out of the window. (I hope my boss isn't a member) :p
I've just got the last one to do for all gold and it's driving me
I'm a bit bored with the single player part of the game, can't really be bothered to do all golds or even all platinums.
Done it on all gold, you get a crap car IMO for doing it but it's a good challenge. Platinum passes the line from difficult to frustrating IMO.
Dan - Live a bit later then? :D
Edited for PCness ;)
Done all Plats, took a while but it was worth it! The CLK is one of the best cars IMHO, the handling is superb and you can use it in normal races, unlike the TVR. If you do manage to get through Platinum it will make you better online :)
ARGH!!!
Platinum is CRUEL. That first speed challenge is doing my absolute nut, I downloaded the ghost and it's still impossible.

You wait until you get to the Maranello 575 cone challenge in Tokyo.
That is possibly one of THE hardest challenges I've done on a Video game. Nightmare.
:)
TBH the first Speed Challenge is probably one of the hardest in the game, if you can do that you can do the rest of them.
I recommend not leaving the cone challenges till last, the two that will really do your nut in are the Coupe one in Stockholm and the Grand Touring one in Hong Kong (I think that's the one you mean Morton?).
The first requires you to do two perfect laps with enough slides in between to get the required score, the second one is slightly easier as you only need one and a bit perfect laps before just stopping, banking the points then making a dash for the finish before time runs out!
One level that really had me stuck was the Grand Touring overtake on KGB Corner - I still can't drive that track well, I prefer twisty tracks like Edinburgh rather than the open, high speed ones...
EDIT: This page (http://www.greenbank.org/pgr2/movies/index.html) has some good movies that give you an idea of how to do some of the harder levels. The Compact Sports Speed Camera is there, the Grand Touring cone challenge, and the American Muscle Hot Lap which is rock hard - Stingray in the rain, in Chicago... need I say more

I borrowed toca off a mate and wasn't overly impressed. Seemed to have very little feedback and the cars seemed to be placed on rather than in the scenary. They also gave the sensation of pivoting around a central point whilst turning. But it does seem popular currently so what do I know :searchme:

I'll give someone a race if they fancy it ?? will need to work it round Halo 2 time though.

I was playing this for the 1st time on live yesterday. Something strange was going on in nearly all the races i played. They made 2 people be the same colour 1 chose a slow car the other person a fast. The fast cars crashed into slow cars. The first slow car that crosses the line wins.
Does anybody just race?
The game your on about is called Cat and Mouse. People do race yea but sometimes it's just fun to do things like that...
Start up your own room and let people join you. At least then your in control.

nice, quite a bit of interest, hopefully get some games in :)
and thanks Matt that sounds good might even leave a game of halo 2 (if i can take the stick ill get), although i better hurry up and unlock some decent cars, are there any in particular that you race a lot? currently trying to go through the game as quickly as possible getting all silver medals to get the gt1 back :)
Some are more popular than overs but we pretty much take it in turns picking and usually race all of them, although if someone hasn't got one of the cars we'll make adjustments.
The Caterham in Roadsters is particularly good fun, I'd leave most of the Ultimates and SUV unlocked till the very end. F40 is another popular choice, personally I like the TVRs in Sports Coupe and Super Cars but like I say we race them all.
As for cat and mouse, if I wanted to compete in the Retard Olympics I wouldn't be playing PGR2 :p Feel free to look me up Lance for proper racing :)
I love tha game, dont play it half as much as I should. I borrowed a projector from work a week ago, had 84 inch PGR2. Was like driving a real car, absolutely immense. :) :)
I've only been on Live for a few weeks having got my xbox for christmas and can say that PGR2 is by far my favourite game.
Feel free to call on yatia for a game if you want an easy victory ;)

I tried PGR2 online once. The other racers were determined to smash into me and not race properly. I was quite annoyed. If they want to play Burnout 3, they should play Burnout 3.
Played this on live for the first time last night. Very, very impressed. Got some good races, although as a beginner (only got PGR2 yesterday) I finished towards the back of the field too often for my liking. Weird to talk to strangers whilst gaming but I'll get use to that.
As for PGR2 the best bit has to be racing round Edinburgh.
Xbox live tag is ianmb is anyone wants a game.

if anyone wants a game ime on now!
go on you know you want to :)
Just bought this at the weekend and ended up playing it on Live 'til about 4 in the morning!
What a great online game. Apart from normal racing I ended up doing a bit of Drag Racing, and had an immense game of Last Mini Standing...which was a hell of a laugh. :)
Love this at the moment, I have halo2 and SCPT but just cant stop playing PGR2.
Played cat and mouse last night for the first time, real good laugh after several tough races.

How do you play 'cat & mouse'?
you need 8 players
race on the nurburg ring.
4 teams of 2 players a team
one person in a Mini and the other in a fast sports car - try to match the colours.
then the minis race around the track, and hte super cars either push them to get them faster, attack the other minis to slow them down, or defend your team mate.
Its the best game ever.
So it's the first mini to win?
I haven't unlocked nurburg ring yet though :(
Looking forward to a game tonight :)
btw, my gamertag is ChrisBravoTown
yeah the minis do the racing so people in sports cars shouldnt cross the line until the first mini goes over.
ahh doesnt matter - ust get someone else to host it.
In case anyone was interested, I have a Pal copy for sale in the Classifieds for a tenner inc ;)
Bloody good game this :)
KGB Corner is a good track for Cat & Mouse too. Basically any fast track that the ultimates can catch up quickly to the minis works well.
You can also earn tracks if you win the online race. Find someone with the Nurburgring unlocked and get them to let you pass the finish line first.
If any of you guys are on tonight, feel free to send me a friend request, and join our game. :)

I'll probably be on, as ChrisBravoTown :) Just got the game so I'm not very good...yet. :)
Got your friend request mate, but i'd moved over to Rallisport as i was having connection probs on PGR. Probably be on again tomorrow though. :)
No probs. I managed a few games before thinking I'd attempt a medal or two....I did about ten in the end, very addictive and I had to drag myself away.
