Hello

I currently have a Toshiba 28" Widescreen TV with built in Dolby Digital surround sound.

Now, although fairly good, i'm guessing it's no match for a dedicated AMP with speakers and Sub Woofer?

With a Budget of around £600, what would I be prudent to spend my money on? I'm just looking at my options and see I could have this Tannoy Speakers set for £300:

Are Tannoys Overrated, are there better alternatives that are cheaper?

I was also looking at the Yamaha DSPAX620 Dolby Digital & DTS Amplifier for £329.99:

Again, I would be greateful if you could tell me if thats is a decent Amp for the price, or are there better ones around?

theres nothing wrong with that amp, but I`d consider either the Marantz SR4200 or SR5200, or if you can stretch a little more, pick up the Pioneer VSX859RDS whilst they are still available:)

I've got a very similar setup.

The same amp, which is a great amp btw, but I don't know nowt about the others Justin has suggested.

As for speakers I've got the Tannoy mX4's, mXC and the mX1's for rears.

Haven't got and don't need a sub...whetever thats because the tannoys produce enough, or the room size I don't know:)

Differences are the mX3 in you packadge, have front firing ports and one less driver. The mXR's are again front firing, and have a different responce range.

Thanks guys, Tannoys sound like a good idea, and I might well go for the:http://www.homecinemaheaven.com/prod_info/speakers/speaker/mxav4.htm without the Sub (My Budget can't stretch to £550) Any chance of a deal on them for a first time buyer Justin? ;)

There is one Problem, the Room where this stuff would go is only 13x10.......is that actually big enough to make the most of a setup like that?

This is probably a stupid question, but here goes anyway.....I've got a 32" DD 5.1 TV, which came with 4 speakers (2 fronts, 2 rears) and a (separate) subwoofer, whilst the TV acts as the centre channel. Obviously the speakers that came with the TV are not very good......but would it be possible to swap them out with something like the Tannoys and obtain better sound - or will this just not work ????

I now a separate AMP is best...but just a thought ...what would it be like direct through the TV.

probly not very good.

It would all depend on the amp part of the TV. You would need a ~100W amp to drive say my Tannoy mX4's...and the ones in the TV are probably more like 30-40W.

Or sommit like that anyway!...ie not enough power:)

How big is your room? If you're planning on using the Tannoy's for music they'll sound pretty bad in a smallish room, as floorstanders are prone to do. If it's a small rom I'd be tempted to go for stand-mounters and a sub. This is more applicable to listening for music than AV though....

the Tannoys are a good buy though. As is the Yamaha amp.

13 x 10, quite small really.

It will mainly be used for films though.......and PS2 games

Is it worth spending £380 on a Speaker system in a Room of that size?

Your bound to say that as you have the set up already in place.

Resource, where in essex do you live? You REALLY ought to go to reighly (sp) hifi in chelsmford and get a listen to some speakers before going in a buying whatever. I know there is an element of cant be bothered but i got them to do it for me, no charge, and they set up what i thought would sound good. It DID sound good, then they got me to try out what they would recommend, and it was MUCH nicer.

I actually live in Woodham Ferrers, but I used to live in Chelmsford.

They don't seem to actually stock much there though...and I wouldn't be buying from them

"Thanks for the demo, i'll just go online and buy this stuff cheaper now"

You are probably right though, best to have a demo.
