I loved this show when it was first shown in the 80s, although my memory of it is a little hazy, I remember it alongside Blackadder as one of the funniest shows on TV.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/guide/articles/h/hotmetal_1299001525.shtml

It was co-written by David Renwick (Jonathan Creek, One Foot in the Grave) and its portrayal of the tabloid press is perhaps even more relevant today than it was back then. There were two series if I recall correctly, both very funny.

But... I've never seen any repeats *ever* and there's obviously no sign of a DVD release since nobody ever seems to remember it! Any idea what happened?

I remember it....was very funny. The bit when Geofrey Palmer asks Robert Hardy 'where am I going to be? In the lift?' ..next thing you see is him sitting at a desk in the lift!!

Also the part when they are trying a new page three 3d technique with this blonde bird jumping up and down topless!!

She used to be a co host of the late late breakfast show with noel edmonds..the press made a big thing of it at the time...Julie Evans I think her name was!

There are loads of funny tv progs from the 80's Id like to see released on dvd!

The bit where Greg Kettle gets hold of a list of people with "Aids" and prints it in the paper was brilliant

(it turns out to be a list of people with hearing aids)

I just can't believe they've never repeated this show - it was absolutely brilliant.

If I remember correctly didn't this very funney series acctualy cause some complaints?

Maybe that is why it hasn't been repeated or released on video or DVD. :searchme:

Excellent show - one of the two decent comedies ITV has made in the last 15 years or so (the other being The New Statesman of course). I guess it's been forgotten a bit due to Drop The Dead Donkey taking over the reins of journalist/news comedy.

I'd love to see a DVD release but I'm not holding my breath.

I remember this, and really loved it. I'd love to see it again.

I'd also quite like to see Whoops Apocalypse, which I never caught at the time, but I'd like to see if it works better as a sit-com than as a film.

Nerdy geek fact: Co-writer Andrew Marshall was allegedly the inspiration for the character of Marvin in HHGttG

was around the classic time for itv that had Spitting Image, Hot Metal & The New Statesman all on top biting form,

at least things have improved these days with the likes of club reps and tv's naughtiest blunders :|

I remember it a bit. Apart from the page 3 wobbling experiment there was also the hack(s) that his in a wardrobe to catch a celeb at it. Seem to remember him going through a box of condoms with a pin to try and create sme news!

Very hazy memories but I know I used to like it.

I have whoops apocalypse on original vhs (channel 5!!) but it isnt the full series, just a chopped down 90 minute version. The bit with the lady newsreader and the bingo numbers is missing!

How come I only remember the nudie bits from these progs!!?
:suspect:

I used to like this, yeah. it was on sunday nights if i remember rightly. and the titles were the words HOT METAL slowly melting. And the theme tune was really crud - "PAPERS! (news news) PAPEEERRSS!! (news news)".

Yep, classic show! I have got the theme tune lying around here somewhere...... Its on one of the usual websites IIRC.

Funny how the one bit I remember the best was the 'wobble vision' Page 3 gag with their 'advert' with the people wearing 3d glasses that slid sideways back and forth!

 Yes I think it was they were going to run a story that about a "royal baby in 9 months time".

Also vaguely remember something about a werewolf and old Bulgarian castle/dracula style theme.

Agree it was a very funny series, though if I remember I think it was repeated shortly after its initial showing. I think some of it was quiet topical as well so it would lose something if repeated now. Certainly the odd episodes of Spitting Image I have seen look very dated, though at the time it was very good and the leading edge of satire.
