I remembered years ago hearing about this and had completley forgotten about it, until I stumbled into Blockbusters yesterday.
Thought to my self this must be pants, haven't heard a single thing about this in ages.
Was I wrong.
Absolutley fantastic movie, can't remember a film that has as many laugh out loud moments in years.
Robin Williams is two words that usually make me not want to see a movie, but he was excellent, stole the show.
Don't know how this was overlooked for a cinema release, but I recommend this one highly.
The stepfather song is inspired

I loved this movie too, Ed Norton, Robin Williams, Danny DeVito and the woman from Being John Malkovich / Three Kings are all great. Excellent story, superb black comedy.
I have the R1 which has some very good extras (DeVito commentary and loads of deleted scenes) - unfortunately it's a snapper release though.

It didn't get a cinema release because
A: Film four went bust before they could release it.
and
B: It made about $6.76 at the U.S. Boxoffice.
Mr Stanton did like this film too.

My friend brought this back from the US to watch a month or so back, and it IS fantastic :)
'I'm Rainbow *ahem* Randolph!!'
And some of the songs are fantastic, 'we're gonna get you off that crack oh yes we will, we're gonna get you off that crack oh yes we will'
I'd recommend it to anyone, well worth looking out for :)

I saw it at the cinema in the US and thought it was great. Much better than Panic Room which I saw the same day. Although, that's comparing apples and oranges really.
Another fan here.
Very funny black comedy, though I feel it loses it's way slightly towards the end. Agree with joconner, though - an excellent turn from Robin Williams (who normally, I can't stand!)
Can't understand why it received such a poor critical reaction

It's very funny but with a wimp out ending. The commentary on the R1 disc by DeVito is not very good, but the deleted scenes make up for it.

Never listened to the commentary. I have the R4, does the R1 have the Easter Egg?
Camino_real agree with you that the ending was a bit weak.
I recall watching the film and thinking how well it was directed and being totally unsurprised it was Danny DeVito. He really should do more stuff. He's top.
Another big fan right here. Complete surprise, very, very funny. A great watch with friends one night, very cheap R1 dvd too!

Just watched this after renting it out, I thought it was a very decent film :) There were a few genuinely funny moments-
One of them was the outline of Moochy after he was killed on the road
Overall, the ending was very weak- and I think it would've been funnier if it had a more serious and realistic tone overall. It's definitely worth a watch though
Loved it to bits, especially some of Sheldon's songs:
He slams the door,
He stomps his feet.
He sends me to bed with zilch to eat.
But my stepdad's not mean he's just adjusting.
