for sure it was a joke dude, and im familiar with the name of the film - I was intimating a selection without naming the film......to be honest a thread like this begs for daft answers since there isnt any such thing as the greatest film of all time, even for one person - "Dude Wheres My Car" is just a valid choice as any other.....actually all of that sounds a bit arsey - I appreciate were just having a bit of fun here :)
cool man this is just for fun
cool :) im gonna have to go ahead and say Pulp Fiction then - there are films to better it in certain departments, but nothing like it for covering so much ground in so many genres. imho of course :D
Well you are all wrong coz One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest is the best film ever made :D
Just a shame I don't have it on DVD yet, can't wait for the SE coming next year
Just Call Me Wanda

The greatest film of all time isn't a film but a trilogy and it's called:
Back To The Future
But if you want a film and only ONE film it has to be:
Aliens
Just Call Me Wanda

The R2 ain't bad - very good quality anamorphic transfer. But if there's an SE then wait for it.
The R2 ain't bad - very good quality anamorphic transfer
You are kidding right?
I bought a copy and it was full of artifacts, the picture was so dirty - even the video looks a lot better
WTF!?
This on my fave film, I don't think so!

A 30 year old, low budget film - what do you expect?
Well let me just point you in the direction of the North By Northwest (made in 1959) DVD and you'll get an idea!
Obviously you haven't seen how much Hong Kong Legends have cleaned up some of the prints on their DVDs either
And anyway, it's my fave film, I'll be as petty as I like about the DVD release ok? :D
I'll go with Cuckoos Nest, with Amadeus right behind it.
The previously mentioned Midnight Run comes in at around #6 in my all time list. Yes, it's that good, no matter how dodgy that poster looks!
However as a long term Poster here (albeit one who no longer has much spare time) I can say that Blade Runner is the Forum's Favourite film by a reasonable margin.
Defeats me, all the same!
You are all wrong - couldn't be any wronger the greatest film of all time is The Seven Samurai
'nuff said, close the thread MODS!
Die Hard is a modern masterpiece.

Of course you are correct, of course, OF COURSE!!!
But if you translate Shichinin no Samurai into Dutch it becomes, Voespogle der Huffendorfen gespoel, if you then translate that back into English it becomes "THE" Seven Samurai. FACT - honest:rolleyes:

Well, there's no "seven" in the original either - so just how pedantic do you want to be? :D
Given that Japanese, like Russian/Slavic languages, doesn't use articles, it's perfectly legitimate to add a "the" or "a" when translating into a language that does.
For instance, Criterion have just released the Czech film Obchod na korze, which they rightly translate as The Shop on Main Street, on the grounds that omitting the "the" would look strange to English readers.
Incidentally, where do you stand on titles that bear no resemblance to the original? Kumonoso-jo literally means something like "Cobweb Castle", not Throne of Blood!

Well, there's no "seven" in the original either - so just how pedantic do you want to be? :DI ain't trying to be pedantic - it just bothers me that my favourite film often gets a 'THE' stuck on the front despite my efforts to re-educate! (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1689&perpage=35&pagenumber=4) :rolleyes:Given that Japanese, like Russian/Slavic languages, doesn't use articles, it's perfectly legitimate to add a "the" or "a" when translating into a language that does.Ok...
The only time the English title has been The Seven Samurai - I believe was on its original truncated US release or thereabouts, and for no other reason than the distributors thought it more phonetically pleasing.
However, this subtly changes the focus of the title.
'The Seven' - refers to the group collectively (like Sturges did in his remake.)
Rather than what Kurosawa intended; that of seven individuals. For instance, Criterion have just released the Czech film Obchod na korze, which they rightly translate as The Shop on Main Street, on the grounds that omitting the "the" would look strange to English readers. It wouldn't only look strange - but it would change the titles meaning...
Tell me - is the movie about people who 'shop' on Main Street or is the movie about 'The Shop' on Main Street? From your statement I believe it's about the shop. Correct?Incidentally, where do you stand on titles that bear no resemblance to the original? Kumonoso-jo literally means something like "Cobweb Castle", not Throne of Blood! :D
Whatever just don't call it 'The Throne of Blood' ;)
Anyway!
I'm off to watch The Star Wars (http://uk.imdb.com/Title?0076759)

Based on empathy with the characters I'd have to go with Shawshank Redemption - I'm moved every time I watch it.

STARSHIP TROOPERS
Theres so many to choose from but for me possibly one of these:
Apocalypse Now
T2
Alien
Toy Story
The Matrix
GoodBye Mr Chips (1939 version)
The Seven Samurai
I'm going to stop now because this list could go on for ever.
It is, of course, "The Wild Bunch", closely followed by "Dressed To Kill".
Of course, if you're talking "most important film of all time", it's "Birth of A Nation" or "Citizen Kane".
Don't know if u can really claim a film to be "Best of all time", but If I had to take only one to a deserted island, it would be:
The Prodigal Son
(or possibly Enter the Dragon)

for me there is no best film of all time
but top three fims
Halloween 4
Aliens
Raiders Of The Lost Ark
I think the best film of all time is... Robin Hood Prince Of Theives.

When Harry Met Sally. i don't know why they still bother making romantic comedies. Why don't they just stop and think for a bit in their planning meetings and go,"look, I know we've got this idea for making a film, but honestly it won't be as good. Why don't we just re-release WHMS?"
And Cool Hand Luke. And Police Story.

"The Wizard of Speed and Time",
closely followed by:
"The Return of Captain Invicible" and
"Weird Al" Yankovic: UHF
2 of which are "soon to be released on DVD"
Apparently Mike (Jittlov) has every intention to finish "The Wizard..." and put out a final version (source news:alt.fan.mike-jittlov), and UHF is "in the works"
