Using Ninpo reduces your Ninja rating at the end of the level so I always tried to avoid using it except in the most difficult of circumstances.
The Level 7 Alma boss is one of the hardest in the game. You need to know all her moves off by heart and have a fair amount of luck before you can even hope to beat her.
Probably not a good time to tell you that you'll have to fight her again later on in the game.:D

Does the ninja rating do anything though

Quickie question: Is there a language option to keep the voice acting in Japanese, with english subs (I know some US NTSC games have this option, but dropped it for PAL releases).

Yes.
Is this games as hard as i've heard.
I was tempted to pick this up from Game the other day, but don't have the time or patience for really hard games.
Zelda and Prince of Persia are more my level :D

I didn't find it as hard as it's reputation suggested, the first boss is definitely very tough considering how early you meet him and it does take a bit of perseverance, but I completed it and I've now played through again to almost the end on Hard level.

Without a doubt yes, but very rewarding when you do get past a boss/tough bit

Yep - the lift does still work. I think Goblin is saying that at the bottom of that liftshaft you end up in the water. If you dive down there's a tunnel which runs to a cavern with aplatform on that doesn't work , in which is a save point. I've been to the cavern but couldn't remember seeing the save point.
Yup. When you come up the lift, kill the 3 ninjas, do the library and get the Ki upgrade. Go back down the lift, swim through the tunnel and save. Then you are free to take a run at Alma.
Damn she is hard. I managed to kill her once, but used all 5 great elixiers and 4 standard elixiers. Not good.
She usually dodges my fireballs so I am just using the ice storm when she is on the deck.
PS. don't forget, once you have defeated alma, go and pick up the war hammer and then go back down under the alter all the way down to the grail room, kill all the zombies and get a life of the gods upgrade.

I just hope this update appears elsewhere other then just a Live update! I think it will. :)

How many chapters does this game have? I've just defeated the darth Vader type guy (you know, black suit, mask and heavy breathing :) ) and picked up his sword. It was only at the last moment that I noticed equipping the sword had drained my health to almost zero. Is it worth equipping this sword for tough battles of should I stick with the Dragon Sword and Vigoorian Flails (I don't like any of the other weapons!)

I'm pretty sure it's 15 chapters (could be 16, I lost track a little towards the end!). I never bothered using his sword, though I believe it's reasonably powerful, it does have that neat litle energy drain attack thing where you can suck health from your enemies though. Like you I stuck to the flails and the dragon sword as I think they're the best, though the wooden sword can be very impressive once you work out it's secrets!
Currently struggling through level 5 or 6 on Very Hard level, trying to get the holy grail, so many battles between the save points that it's getting frustrating!

?? Time for you to spill all in some spoiler tags I think! ;)

Right here we go. The wooden sword can be upgraded LOTS, after about 7 upgrades (the last one costs about 40000 so it's not cheap) it becomes a weapon called "Unlaboured Flawlesness" which looks like a giant cricket bat with runes carved down the side.
It's very powerful but very slow, however it's effectivness depends on your health level, when your health drops below a certain level it becomes more powerful. Then if your health gets to level where it starts flashing red the runes on the sword sword start to glow, at that point you can kill almost any enemy in the game with one hit, even the bosses only take a couple of hits! Though obviously fighting like this is risky as you only need one hit to kill you!
It also has some fairly powerful ultimate techniques, smart bomb style attacks that take out lots of enemies.

A bit of Ninja Gaiden news.
Apparently a patch will be released in early August to make the camera fully controllable (and add a few extra weapons & stuff).
Good to see a developer listening to constructive criticism and acting on it.
(sorry, now see that goblin has already posted about this; still, good news)
Just ordered the the PAL version of this. An earlier post seemed to imply that an option to change location to US in the game would restore the beheadings. Is this actually the case? Does the lack of them affect the gameplay much?

Didn't want to start a new thread. As the game is starting to become cheaper, I might finally go for it, but I'd like to know about the above ... I've read on another thread that the decapitation move (swallow dive?) is quite effective, so it sounds like it would affect gameplay.
Also, if I went for the US version, will it still work on an unmodified PAL XBOX with Live functions? I didn't think it would, but it seems to work with other games (can't recall specific ones as examples, but will edit it in if I do). Thanks for clearing that up!

I believe the game plays exactly the same, you just don't actually see the decapitation, the enemies just drop dead with their head still attached!
Also, I'm pretty sure the US version wont play on an un-modded X-Box so you will have to get the UK version.
I started playing this again recently. I managed to easily reach the Chapter 7 boss but I had no Health Elixers, may as well have had a corrupted save for all the use that is.
Was that patch to make to camera controllable ever released, and if so, how can I get it without having Xbox Live?
just bought this again as i miss it, probably best game i've played in years, started over on hard, my god it's a bit rough, up to the village so far in chapter 2

Jeez, I mus have got REAL lucky then, cause I beat her in one go.
Dodged her ranged stuff and then went in with a few diving swallow attacks which really carve her health off. When she dived at me, I dodged her and laid the smackdown on her when she was grounded. I must have only used 2 normal elixirs during the whole fight
hardest boss in the whole game imo.

I'd best not say how many times I had to do the first boss then :suspect:
The first boss has got me stuck too! I'm sure it's because I'm awful at the game, but I can't seem to get past him...
Gone back to this now, got the downloads, does just starting the game normally "enable" the new packs? Because I went to new game and I thought the camera was mobile now?

All the bosses require a strategy to beat. If you go in with brute force you'll get your ass kicked time and time again. A basic rule to beat the first boss is patience and timing - keep your distance and stay in block position. Wait for him to lunge at you, side roll out of his way and whilst he's commited himself to a combo attack from his side. Then back off and repeat. Remember to study all of his moves so you can time your counters better.
