Arch Stanton

Mr Stanton's must have Jackie Chan films

1: Project A / A 2( coming next year from HKL )
2: Police Story 1, 2, 3: Supercop ( Disney own the rights to 3 but the H K disc is pretty good. )
3: Drunken Master 2/ The Legend of Drunken Master ( R1 or nothing if you want this. )
4: Drunken Master
5: Operation Condor: Armour of God 2 ( AVOID Armour of God 1 )

Plus there's loads more that are worth a watch.

That's from Who am I.

I always recommend Thunderbolt because no one else does ;) ... Its a Gordon Chan film (highbinders) and one of HK's better directors.

So are HKL yet to release Chans best films, if at all ?.

cirrus888
23-10-2001, 23:41
Well drunken master 2 seems to be what everyone wants but that belongs to disney. Police story is already out and project A is coming out soon ... so HKL has a few great Jackie titles in thier catalogue.

I personally want Gordon Chan's Fist of Legend more than anything else but I don't want a dubbed and edited version.

Shingster
23-10-2001, 23:42
They've released Police Story, which could well be his best film. They're releasing Young Master, Police Story 2, Project A 1&2 & Wheels On Meals, so there's a lot to look forward to.
Dimension have the rights to Drunken master 2, so HKL won't be releasing that one. Dragoons Forever has not been slated for R2 release by anyone yet as it? That's as damn shame as this is probably the best "3 brothers" film.

My top 10 Chan (In no particular order) would be:

Police Story 1,2 & 3
Drunken Master 1&2
Project A 1&2
Young master
Dragons Forever
Wheels On Meals

If anyone is tempted to get Thunderbolt, I suggest getting the DVD distributed by Funny, from PokerIndustries, as the HK one is P&S.

Sounds like a dodgy label if you ask me ... if its only pan and scan then you might as well get the cheap VCD version of it.

Funny distribute it in Taiwan, which means it's been dubbed into mandarin, but apart from that, it looks like the better version by a mile. It maintains the OAR & the pic quality looks better, judging from the review posted on the Asian DVD Guide (http://www.asiandvdguide.com/).
It's definitely NOT a dodgy label!!!

Is that the ritek version? dubbed in mandarin? I mis-read your original post because I thought you said it was pan and scan.

There isn't a HK version of fist of legend available on DVD?

(Cough) I've certainly recommended Thunderbolt in the past (seeing as it has a FTO in it....somewhat implausibly dicing with a Skyrine:D )
Thunderbolt is available from www.amazon.de
According to www.bulletsnbabesdvds.com there's a review due there shortly also

Wheels on meals is available from www.amazon.de and www.dvdboxoffice.com

Get the spanish version of Thunderbolt if you want it on region 2, PAL and with cantonese language and english subtitles. All in a perfectly acceptable anamorphic transfer, as stated by someone that owns it (not me). I think the German version, however, should be the same. Best bet is, you do the maths dvdgo.com (http://www.dvdgo.com/cgi-bin/DVDGO.storefront/3bd5fc8e01f9844c274ed45fd47a070f/Export/products/00831)

The Asian DVD Guide list the Taiwanese distributor as Funny, who seem to distribute a few more Chan films in Taiwan. There's one review of it posted there & it features side by shots of the Funny DVD & the Chinese Thakral P&S DVD, (which is the one DDD & Coolashop sells). Looking at those shots I'd say the Funny DVD blows the Thakral one out of the water. Poker Industries sell both versions at the same price: £16.83 delivered.

I don't think FOL has ever been released on DVD in HK, only VCD, which is very weird. I own the Ritek version myself, & I think the transfer's good by Asian standards & the Mandarin dubs pretty good too. The extra footage is a bonus as well. Do you have this version Cirrus?

The Spanish version isn't listed on the AsianDVDGuide, you ought to tell them to include it MrVampire. The German version is listed as not having English subs.

cirrus888
24-10-2001, 00:37
No I don't have the Ritek version of FOL because it is dubbed in mandarin and I can understand cantonese so that would be a bonus for me.

The Funny Thunderbolt is also dubbed in mandarin and I would never knowingly buy a pan and scan DVD so I guess I will be waiting for another release of that film too.

Shingster
24-10-2001, 00:41
Maybe the Spanish version is the one for you then? The Norwegian/Swedish release is also listed as Anamorphic & Cantonese, so maybe you should give that a go?

cirrus888
24-10-2001, 00:45
hmmm ... the only reason why I have not bought any of those ghibli releases from Japan is because of the high cost ... are these spanish and swedish versions inc P+P cheap?

Shingster
24-10-2001, 00:56
DVDOO have what looks like the Dutch version for £13.37 (I think they do free delivery to the U.K)here (http://www.dvdoo.com/dvdoo/film.asp?Command=2533). The case is the same as the Norwegian/Swedish version. Altrnatively there's the Spanish one at Mr Vampire's link, that's listed as 24euros + 11.72euros = £22, Ouch!! (the 11.72euro P&P is for up to 4 DVDs though).

If you've never used DVDoo before & you're tempted Cirrus, they're well regarded & here's some translations of the Danish terms on the site:

forventet leveringsdato=date of arrival
pris pr.stk. = price per item
køb = buy

ny kunde=new customer

Hmm The skyscraper fights wasn't on Who Am I ? was it?

When Chan goes to Holland, he slides down a MASSIVE skyscraper and nearly ***** himself in the outtakes. So funny.

I really like any film he does as he got such comedic value. Any fight that involves props being exchange at high speed is amazing to watch.

KeyserSoze

The skyscraper fight is Who Am I and a quality fight it is.

Wheels On Meals is hands down my fav Chan movie, while all the other kids wanted the A team van, I wanted the yellow food mobil.

bazkeane82, could you check a few things for me ? Is the opening scene where JC and Yuen Biao are carwashing and get in trouble with the policeman intact ? Also are there outakes at the end of the movie ?

If its the scene where Yuen Biao throws a bucket of water over the policeman then yes its there, there were no outtakes at the end of the movie but i think there is some on the 2nd disc, not checked it out yet.

i actually enjoyed gorgeous especially the fights with the small guy called Alan and seeing Tony leung play a gay character was funny, yeh it had its cheesy moments but a lot of Jackie chan movies do , Qi Shu was also :n0rty: in the movie.
I was suprised to learn the the Uk r2 version of the film was cut by 20 mins , anyone know what exactly was cut?

Wasn't wheels on meals originally cut because of a scene where they break into a car with a coat hanger? Or is that another movie?

I bought both of the Armour of God films for around £13 from YesAsia.com. There both digitally remastered in both video and sound (new 5.1 mixes on both).

Despite already owning the HKL release of the first, AFAIK this was the only way to get a decent copy of the second.

There is no such thing as the best martial arts film. They get boring after a vewing or two (if lucky). The only martial arts dvd I have is Fist of Legend with Jet Li and I hardly ever watch that, even.

Strange generalisation  , realistically you could apply to that any genre. There is no such thing (for example) as the best sci-fi film ever, or the best horror film ever as films progess onwards.

If you mean as a whole that martial arts movies aren't entertaining to you, then fair enough....personally I could watch Iron Monkey (Donnie Yen), Once Upon a Time in China trilogy, Drunken Master and Ong-Bak many times over.

No-one's mentioned First Strike (Police Story 4?).
It was the first Jackie Chan film I saw, and his skill blew me away. Maybe not the best of his films, but the scene where he fights using a set of step ladders (and jumps through the rungs!) is worth watching it for alone. Oh, and jumping off a cliff into (actually) freezing water with only a t-shirt on; and getting into a first-floor window from the street in about 3 seconds; and fighting on stilts... The man is amazing. Shame about the recent tat like The Medalion and The Tuxedo. Jackie Chan does not need CGI :(

The IVL Police Story boxset (with the first three proper PS movies) is worth getting. Each movie is the uncut asian version with remastered picture and sound, much like the Armour Of God set. There's also a remastered Project A set floating around. And I just got the new HKL DVD of WoM, so I'm a happy Chan fan at the moment! The new R1 release of Thunderbolt looks pretty sweet too.

Weird. I've watched quite alot of my collection alot more than twice.

Finally got round to watching my HKL Wheels on Meals today. Fantastic film. I hadn't seen the scene where they were washing the van before

I'm pretty sure the scene where Sammo goes to the cathedral (or whatever it is) to meet the butler isn't on my HK DVD either.

Dragons Forever
Drunken Master 1 & 2
Police Story 1,2, & 3

Young master

Job Done that, he's been in a lot of good films, but not so many "Unmissable" ones. :dork:

Disney sadly have the UK/US rights to Police Story 3, releasing it as the cut & dubbed 'Supercop'. The IVL box has the uncut, original language version so it's worth buying for that alone! It also features a 121 minute version of Police Story 2 that runs for around 15 minutes longer than the original Hong Kong cut (and by proxy the HKL DVD, which with PAL speed up clocks in at a mere 101 minutes).

The new HD transfers for each film are really good, with lots of detail, and are a stark contrast to the overly-processed HKL efforts. PS 2 is also cropped and matted quite noticably on the HKL version (watch the outtakes reel in the extras then watch the one at the end of the movie) whereas the IVL edition is properly proportioned. The remixed 5.1 dolby/dts audio tracks aren't very good though, so it's great that the original mono tracks also accompany each film.

There aren't many extras. Each film has old & new trailers plus a photo gallery. PS 1 has a short reel of Jackie outtakes from many movies; PS 2 bizarrely has the interview with Benny Lai that HKL did for their DVD; PS 3 has a new interview with Stanley Tong. The set also comes with a neat little photo book.

Each disc has a Chinese or English menu option so you don't have to worry about deciphering menu selections, and the discs are region 0 to boot. CD-WOW do the set for a very reasonable £24.99...

I concur with Niceguygeoff - the IVL boxset is a must-have for seemingly pristine audio/video versions of all three films. The extra material does not hold a candle to the HKL versions but is interesting, nonetheless. At £24.99, this is a bargain, if you love the movies as much as I do. Furthermore, if you REALLY love the movies, it is probably also worth purchasing the HLK versions of the films for the extra material alone. They must be very cheap from numerous sources by now. :dork:

Niceguygeoff
06-02-2006, 15:09
Yeah, the HKL editions are still worth getting (or keeping :)) for the extra bits and bobs, although the presentation of the movies in the IVL set really is superb. I watched PS 2 again earlier today and was stunned by how good it looked - even the 5.1 remix isn't too bad - and now I'm hankering for the other major IVL Jackie boxsets: Armour of God and Project A.
