View Full Version : Movie Discussion Club - this week watch Halloween
Just had a (probably crap) idea - but it could enhance dvd watching.
Basically we all agree to watch a dvd during a certain week (we could use the poll feature of the forums to decide from, say, five films).
During the next week we could all post into a thread discussing various parts of the film etc. Also during this week would be the vote for the next film. This process could continue untill interest drops.
Its just an idea but I thought that it would be good as I never usually get to have good discussion about the films I watch, and I would really like to learn more the concepts behind them (I am quite far from a movie buff).
If you are interested in this then post in with a few film suggestions and we will try and kick things off in the next week or so if enough people are interested.
EDIT - Halloween is the film for this week! I will start a thread next friday for discussion.

Been over to www.criteriondvd.com at all ?
They do the same sort of thing - buried away in the "discussion" part of the site - and it seems to work well.
In agreement - the vast range of knowledge contributors to this site have (well, all aprt from Brookey ;)) would certainly enliven a few old favourites out there :D

Err, no. But I know of different book clubs that are based on the same concept - thought it might be good here.
Hi everyone, just clocked in for today!
I would agree this is a great idea, the criterion discussion part of the site would only include criterion discs. But if we did it here then any DVD would be surggested! It could be made a sticky for 1 week only and we would post our comments. Mods? What do you think?
The only problem would be certain people would be left out because they don't own the particular DVD being discussed. (would be still intresting to them to see weather it's worth buying)

I was only referring to the Criterion site as an example of the same idea in action...

I'm up for it!!!
err.. suggestions?
anything in my sig really!!
recent releases or golden oldies?
I think this is a goad idea but as it means you could discuss the film without worrying about Spoilers.
As for suggestions how about one of the following
Battle Royale
Evil Dead 2
Halloween (which would be a very topical choice and would also give me an excuse to go out and buy it)
No, I think we should start with...
Battlefield Earth, The Avengers, Wild Wild West...
:D :D :D :D :D :D
Deaks.
My 3 choices would be between:
American Psycho
Aliens
A Clockwork Orange
Michael Brooke

I think it would be a lot more interesting to discuss titles that aren't discussed every five minutes or so - American Psycho and Aliens in particular pop up here all the time!
Halloween is a good suggestion, because there's a huge amount to talk about.
It's a good idea alright, but how many people are we talking about all having the same disc?
I'll happily give Halloween a nod, too.

It's a good idea in theory, but until Holiday on the Buses is released on DVD, I'm not sure I can be bothered to take part.
Sounds like a good idea to me. And as Halloween is just around the corner maybe we should try some horror or thriller for the first week.
Lets get this going,
I think to start with let craigb pick 10/20 films then the mods can set up a poll allowing everyone to vote what the discussion will be about.
OK so where are the mods then? we should get this going! (maybe there still deciding on weather it's fesable)

I'd be up for this & Halloween sounds like a good start.
It would be better to stay clear of new releases methinks - better value to bank on things that people might have already, or at least be familiar with - given the amount of things that people here buy, getting through backlogs of new purchases is an issue.
Where  :p :D
There! can't you see? :D
Halloween seems to be a popular starting point - any other suggestions?

cool, then Battlefield Earth it is....
Just bumping this to see if people are still interested in doing this?
Not sure whether we should just go with Halloween to try and get things going and then take it from there? What do you think?
craigb - that sounds pretty damn sweet to me - Halloween it is.........I think there should be advance decisions on the films in weeks to come - a FIFO queue if you will so everyone has the opportunity to get hold of the film in one form or another....

I posted this exact idea over a week ago at the site suggestion forum and it was greeted with one response from Cap'n Al who didn't like the idea and now I see a 20+ thread here saying what a good idea it is:( .

I would have backed you up on the idea - but I don't read the suggestion forum :(.
We will make it Halloween for this week (and start the discussion next Friday or so).
Until then, keep the suggestions coming for the next film.

I'll certainly take part as I bought Halloween a few weeks ago.
I don't have Halloween so here's a suggestion for the one after - Chasing Amy. - Sorry I've become obsessed since reading the screenplay...:D
I don't have it either but I will either rent or buy it this weekend (my g/f has been on at me to see it).
Just a quick bump up.
Watch Halloween (if you can) this week and I will start a discussion on it next friday.

Those who don't own it, or can borrow/rent it should note that it's on BBC1 on Monday night - SO NO EXCUSES!!!!!!!

But if it's panned and scanned by the BBC then you still haven't really seen it.

MMMMMMMM But which one to watch. The TV edit or the Cinema.
Think I will go for cinema in 5.1 as I just got a new sub and it should sound cool.
I'm up for this, bought it on R1 and watched it for the first time and really enjoyed it. Got the new R2 edition which is supposed to be a cracking transfer so another excuse to watch a scary movie !

I think this is a great idea! and would love to help make this an original feature of this forum! Sure it's been done before, but it would certainly benefit the members!
I will highlight this thread to the other guys and we can discuss the feasability of it!
Perhaps a sticky thread each week with a poll could go up on a Monday, after suggestions had been made over the weekend. The film could then be announced on the Thursday...and then the discussion could commence. After each week passes and a new film selected the previous thread could become 'unstikified'..:D
OK, guys...myself and a few others on the team have discussed this concept! In general we all agree that the concept could work.
I would like to set up a thread....
If those interested in the idea would like to make a few suggestions with regards to how we could go about this, I will read over them and hopefully set something up asap.

ps...not Haloween...I have'nt got it...:D....lol
I'm well up for this idea. It would be really interesting to have regular debates regarding movies.
I havent seen Haloween so I think it would be a great start (I was also looking at the DVD is Tesco's today, but £22 seemed a bit pricey...)
When do we start?
Mark
Ok....guys here is what I propose:
Here is a mock-up thread...not good at things like this...so if anyone has any suggestions feel free to air them! :)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Movie Discussion Club (sounds a bit geeky I know) :D
- Warning Spoilers included -
Several members have expressed an interest in developing a thread where an in depth discussion can be lead on a selected film. This thread aims to satisify this need! :)
Each week a film will be selected from a poll generated from the suggestions made by the threads contributors. This film will then be the basis of discussion for the thread. It is intended that you should view this film, and then as members can discuss the issues raised by one another...be it issues with the plot, direction....the special effects..etc..etc..The intentions being to hopefully give us all a greater insight into the film!
I propose that on a weekly basis a poll will be set up, on a Saturday, the film with the most votes as of Monday will then become the film for discussion. The thread will then be available for people to contribute to! This thread will remain 'sticky' at the top of forum. After the week has passed, and a new film has been selected the previous thread of discussion will be released from being 'sticky' and the new one will replace it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If this ok, I will set up a poll tonight once people have made suggestions for this weeks film!
Regards
Paul
