View Full Version : CD-WOW.net (US) prices up

The prices at the US site of CD-WOW have gone up today by a considerable amount. Some examples:
Bulletproof Monk (R3) was $6.95 , is now $8.95
Once upon a time in America (R2) was $12.95 , is now $15.95
Coupling Season X (R1) was $12.95 , is now $15.95
Walt Disney Treasures: The Chronological Donald (R1) was $21.95 , is now $27.95
Simpsons Season 1 (R1) was $23.95 , is now $30.95
This is bad, since their prices were usually below their UK/HK counterparts :(
Maybe something to do with the low USD exchange rate?
edit
Note: these prices are including a $1 price reduction (with the use of a voucher link).
/edit
When their HK prices went up, the explanation was along the lines of those prices were for the benefit of Hong Kong residents, not us in the UK. Perhaps it's just an extension of the same policy?

They’ve gone up even more - The Disney Treasures are now $28.95! All of those were $21.95 less than 2 hours ago. I know because I was gonna cancel elsewhere and order at CDWow. X Files RR have also shot up by nearly $10.
Infernal Affairs 3 ordered @ 11am today for $13.95 now $16.95.
CDWow losing a lot of goodwill recently.

That explanation doesn't really make sense - by increaseing the US/HK prices they are making themselves less attractive to the "US & HK" customers. Also, when I was ordering Family Guy S3 from the US site last night, I noticed that the default country to deliver to is the UK.

Have sent them an email asking them to re-consider. There’s no justifable reason for such a massive price hike.
If you feel inclined I’d suggest emailing them with your POV.

Was just about to order some more Criterions...they've jumped up $7/$8 overnight  :(
...they might be trying to stop us using this loophole, but how is this fair to the americans?
...not happy...but have more money in the bank!
Sounds like a good day for DVD Pacific.

I've also send an e-mail, asking for the reason of this increase. Let's see what their response is...
The increase to the HK price made a bit of sense but agree that this makes them look expensive compared to other HK shops. However, that excuse cannot hold for US prices as they are not shipping "locally" anymore. Why make yourself uncompetitive with the rest of the competitive US market? Unless, of course, they sell little to the US and it's really only the UK exploiting this price difference . . . kind of expected this to happen though but hoped it wouldn't.

I've just received their answer (they ARE fast in customer service):
Thank you for your e-mail.
Unfortunately due to recent exchange rate fluctuations we are no longer able
to maintain a separately priced site.
This is why the prices have now been brought in line with the rest of our
sites.
Sorry for the inconvenience, and I hope that you will not hesitate to
contact us again with any further enquiries you might have.
Kind Regards.
As I expected...

Oh well, time to look elsewhere...running out of options though!
Glad I got my order in for LotR: Two Towers extended edition yesterday - $26.95 now $33.95, a price hike of almost £4 from £14.39 to £18.12.

JUst finished my CD Wow Criterion fest in time then ;)
DVD Pacific's prices aren't far away (cheaper in some cases).

So many films, so little time...
Just went to order a couple of CD's and
$2US increase.
Their site is very quick now so either they have installed new servers or there is not as much traffic.
I just got some vouchers form orders on the hk site
Can you only use these vouchers on the uk site ?
I can't find anywhere to enter them on the hk or .net sites ?

Hilarious email in light of the recent massive price rises:
Thought of the Week: Bargains are Good
Dear Member,
This week we realised that paying less for your goodies is a good thing.
You feel better for saving cash, you can spend your change at the local and you feel you've got a real bargain - it's good for
the soul, err or something like that.

So they should ignore exchange rate fluctuations and sell DVD's for a loss on the US site to UK based customers...well that makes good business sense:cuckoo:

Get her.
Do you believe everything you’re told? Exchange rate fluctuations could explain a dollar or so price rise - Not $3-$10 across the board.
As you’re so trusting, I have some timeshare options I’d like to sell you.......

You can keep your share options, the point I am making is everyone is quick to complain, what about CDWOW recent reduction of all the Criterion titles as well as the lower prices of Region 1 new releases.

What’s "recent" is their raising of all prices, Criterions and R1’s. With the addition of accurate values declared on shipments, the fuss with the BPI and the decline in customer service (2 unanswered emails in the last 2 weeks) it seems as though they’re going out of their way to alienate existing customers.

Well on the .com site the majority of the Criterions are prices GBP17.99 and GBP14.99
Perhaps you should go and have a look:wave:

 You’re easily pleased. It’ll take more than $6/$2 off RRP to get me excited.

FACT: CDWOW have reduced the price of Criterions and R1's over the last couple of weeks.
Go check your facts before posting in future.

All prices have risen not gone down. :cuckoo:
Make sure you spend that $2 saving wisely and don’t go blowing it all at once.

Obviously you cannot read or reseach. Three weeks ago CDWOW reduced the Criterions from GBP21.99 to GBP 17.99 and from GBP18.99 to GBP 14.99.
The fact that your ego is too big to admit that in this case you are incorrect makes any further discussion pointless.

More fool you for using the UK site when the prices have been lower on the US site. I find it hard to believe they were selling a $40 list price DVD for $41+ and a $30 List price disc for $35+.
The point is prices have been raised across all sites in the last couple of days to reflect the average to poor prices on the UK site.

More fool...never ever ordered from them...I get my DVD's for free:lol:
I find it hard to believe you don't check your facts before you post:thumbs:

Hardly a slanderous accusation David!
You should have reported this thread BEFORE it degraded into a slanging match, not after you carried on arguing to a point where everyone is **** off. I'm certainly not stepping in and sorting this mess out, you're as big a part of it as anyone. Next time report a thread before it comes to this. We don't mind stepping in to help out but we certainly won't waste our time mopping up a mess that could easily have been avoided.
david2002 - please bear in mind that if you intend to post as a CD-WOW representative you should make that clear in your posts and DON'T post as if you don't have any ties with the company.
It is misleading and when it comes to light it doesn't look very professional.
