The video I saw of this showed some really bad slowdown in 2-player split-screen mode - could spoil it a bit :(. Also, there didn't seem to be much car damage happening...

But it does look very nice from the screenshots, though...

There some really good info on the game over at the http://www.xblracing.com forums. One of the mods there is actually invoved in producing the game. Various snippets are things like leaderboards ghosts are downloadable ala PGR2. For Live you can have 2-16 cars ghosts, or 2-4 cars with collision. By ghosts it means your opponents cars are just outlines of the cars and totally transparent "inside" the outline and no collisions. Worth reading the threads for.

It'll probably find it's way on the PC eventually. The first one did not long after it was released on the xbox. About 6 months or so I reckon, unless it's going to be an xbox exclusive but I don't think this will be the case.

Overall 9.9/10

Best. Rally. Game. Ever.

Love it to bits, maybe even more than the woman in my life! Hmm maybe if it could give me sexual pleasures then yes but those graphics are so slick and sexy! If you ever want to show off your xbox get this game. Being a driving game fanatic I can be quite critical sometimes and when I fired this one up watched the intro and drooled a bit, I simply couldn't wait. Then there I was selecting my car tuning it and ready to go. 3..2..1..GO! Stunning. Then i came to the 1st bend. Disappointed, or so I thought. I took me around a 30mins to an hour to get used to the handling but I dont know how I wanted that car to go round the first corner, it must have been because sometimes I think I'm a driving god and then when I lost total control was disappointed? Anyway been playing for ages now and completed the amateur career and I just cant put it down. Moving on to professional career now and hope its a bit more challenging. I was always winning by a min of 20secs per race in the amateur career, bit too easy. Some of the stages are simply breathtaking and you might crash simply because your admiring the scenery and replays are cool. Watching your car power slide round hairpins in super slowmotion is sooo good. Cant check out multiplayer yet, I'll do that when I purchase the full game but this is soo much better than TOCA 2, but then it is a whole different kettle of fish...

buy it.

9.6/10

oh yeah its widescreen and dolby including custom tracks.

Cheers
Johnny

Played this last night and seems pretty good - at least the cars have a bit of weight about them now, unlike the first one.. :gag: Great graphics and the handling is definately weighted towards arcade rather than sim.

Good fun! :D

Is it just me or do the cars look and feels massive..? There's no way two lanes of traffic could safely traverse some of those 'proper' tunnels (not those shed efforts in Sweden)..

As gta15 the manual control slow-mo replays are fantastic... :dork:

People are getting worried about the narrow tracks ruining the racing, I had some absolute classic four player split races on the first one, I cant see as this being too much different. Of course there won't be the split. There's gonna be bumping but shouldn't derive from it too much.

I doubt I'll bother too much with wireframe either but I dunno.

i found the bumping pretty fun especially if damage is on high and you end up crashing them into a wall :)

A few races we had we used the wireframe cars but imo theres no problem with the track sizes.

I got this today and it is awesome. Even the Crossover races are much better than I thought they were going to be. The level of detail in the different environments and the handling of the cars makes Rallisport Challenge 2 one of the most enjoyable racing games to play. I'm a big fan of the original (played it before Halo on X-box launch day if I remember right). I used to play on Normal difficulty but I didn't notice a difficulty select option when starting my profile/career. Are the Amateur, Pro, Champion (etc) classes now part of the difficulty selection or have I missed something? Already on 300 points out of 420 in Amateur class after 15 events.

Definately one worth buying.

Had about 6 races on xbox live, won 3 as it happens

Pretty easy to get used to the handling actually, especially after playing pgr2 quite a bit recently.

Tried two modes so far: rally and rallycross. 4 players and no slowdown what so ever. The width of the tracks haven't caused any problems so far, none of the races have been that close to tell.

I wouldn't trade in TOCA 2 for this even though in some ways TOCA 2 did seem to be influenced by the variety of racing in the original Rallisport Challenge (Ice Racing for instance). But between PGR2, TOCA 2 and Rallisport Challenge 2 any other racing game is going to have to offer something really special to warrant a purchase against these. I don't have X-box Live and I think all these three games offer great value for money even if you intend to only play them offline.

DB2k
21-05-2004, 19:54
I dumped TOCA2 for this. I am glad I did. This is a fun game. I think my driving skills would prefer the tracks to be a little wider in places (bridges"!"!!) as I dont fancy trying to learn all the courses..

Anyway.. liking it .. very pretty. Lots of scenery.. the birds are a bit of an afterthought tho! ;)

Still.. a very enjoyable game. Will be going on LIVE later i think..

Lol, I was up and on Live, saw you on my friends list, I don't have the Xbox Friends thing :p

This game is great. So far, I've completed the Amateur and have almost finished the Pro section.

I've played once on Live and it was great but wanted to get some better cars before I played again.

I ended up playing this most of the day. The graphics really are something else :D

Just completed amateur. Took 2 hrs according to the stats. Came 1st in every race first go apart from one where I was second and redid it to get 1st for completeness. Good game. I like the ice racing which is good fun.

Does anyone remember when the X-box was first launched there was a Rallisport Challenge thread on here where you had to get the best time on one stage or circuit in a specific car. The one I remember most (checks records) was the Ice Racing, North Hill Circuit using only the Ford Escort Cosworth. You could change the car settings however you wanted but you had to use that car on that circuit in time trial mode. On the 15/4/2002 I got a lap time of 31.92 on the North Hill Circuit with the Escort Cosworth. It helped me in the game as well because I got 5330 points for Ice Racing Open in Career mode using the same car.

With the UK release of Rallisport Challenge 2 maybe we could do something similar. The format of this challenge probably sounds a bit redundant to those with X-box Live, but not everyone is online. If there's a stage or circuit that people find difficult, some friendly competition might help to turn it into one of the easier ones. Or maybe there's somebody who thinks they can't be beaten on one stage and would like to challenge us.

The manual seems wrong or unclear in it's description of how the career selection works. It indicates you select the difficulty when you create a career. But there's no selection on that screen. Only once you select the career is there a selection of difficulties along the centre of the screen. Maybe once you've picked or started one of these you can't alter it.

really not impressed with the live implementation tho. you CAN only talk to the person in front and behind. No idea why but its really annoying. :cuckoo:

Im still not sold on the track width either, however i do not mind the wireframe concept in multiplayer. Although when you have several wire frames in front of you, its hard to see what the track is doing... :(

beautiful graphics, and good sound. I just wish the LIVE implementation was more PGR2 instead of (I think) moto gp..

Great game, had a go at a couple of hill climbs on Live and the wireframe thing didn't seem as bad as I thought it was going to be.

On Rallisport Challenge there was the difficulty settings you couldn't change once you had made your profile. This difficulty setting affected the points you got in Career mode and the driver AI. It looks like the difficulty setting no longer exists and they have just incorporated increased difficulty into the driving classes as you advance. You don't have to start on Amateur or even Pro but each class adds up to the total points you can earn and you would have to do that class eventually to get maximum points. So even though it is very easy, Amateur class is a good way to learn some of the stages and circuits, to unlock some stuff and to get 420 points on the board.

I'd be up for XSN. It's one of the reasons I got this game as the rally single car aspect fits nicely. If it's like the way we do the golf (Links) it's probably worth setting a competition up soonish with 7 days before the start. That way it gives enough people time to sign up. Then end the competition 7 days after that. If you get enough people signed up you can always start early.

Nope - see previous msg. I think a private one means you have to send invites via gamertags. But I think you can password protect a public tournament so that only people who know it can get in. Mr Speed is your man for instructions as he sets all our golf ones up.

Career Points: 620 (Amateur 420, Pro 200)
Events Completed (Amateur 21 / 21, Pro 10 / 36)

You can definitely notice the jump in difficulty from Amateur to Pro. I'm still getting 20 points for each event but there have been a few stages where I didn't get the fastest time on one stage. I wasn't too keen on the night-time rally stage in Sweden (SS4 Heden) that I was just on. You have to concentrate on the Sweden stages more than the others so trying to navigate at night is even more tricky.

I'm done too. A few more attempts and improved a bit more. The final 2.5 secs I would need now would take too long to get. Good result to get down in the 1:14's guys

Agreed, 1:14 is an excellent time for Jackknife Base. I'm not on X-box Live so I can't see everyones' times and I think I'll stick with the three times I've posted above. I suspect for Ridge you'll only be able to shave a couple of seconds off 1:03. But you should be able to get a good 10+ seconds off my Ascent time of 3:51.

Thanks for the update reecie. Excellent time there Matt.

So it is Jackknife Ascent up next, I've got 3:51.578. But I got that time before improving on Ridge and it included a poor Base run within that time. So I think 10 to 15 seconds or more can easily be taken off that time. However, it is much harder to maintain the same level of concentration on a longer stage, even if it includes 2 of the 3 stages you know very well. Good luck, I hope to have a few attempts this evening.

No m8. Once started you can't join plus it was full although Deathchef hasn't taken part in any rounds so far. It will finish 8am tomorrow (26th) so look out for another starting and join that. The next will hopefully have 16 players.

Edit: In the meantime get your XSN access set up.

dan13l, I think we are on Jackknife Ascent now but we might still be on Jackknife Ridge for a few hours, I'm not sure. Why not just take part and post your times as I've done until the next competition, it will be good practice. You can only use one of the first 4 Hillclimb cars (the first class), try the 405 T16.

I received my copy last night, very impressed so far.

So with the XSN tournament you can race the same stage as many times as you like before the round deadline? And the fastest time is the time that gets recorded?

Is there a restriction on what cars can be used?

That's right yes, you can look at the XSN website and see all the details of each others races too, such as what car they used, top speed, average speed and the number of attempts. It's really good!

Cheers twicenightly, I was worried that it was a 'one shot' deal. In which case it could prove very frustrating.

Is that set by the Tournament Commissioner?

I find it unusual in normal Live play the host can force all the other racers to use a certain camera position. Force manual/auto Gears, force car etc... but camera. Odd.

I suppose it is harder to drive in car/bumper view as opposed to behind the car but I think it's more of a preference.

Can you imagine if you were forced to use the 1st person/rider view on MGP2!! :gag: :D

I see that when you look at your friends list on this game it says:
What game they're playing
Whether they are playing or not ("Idle")
Whether they have voice on or not
How long they have been on

If they are playing Rallisport then it shows what track they are on, what position they are in and even how far around the track they are. If they aren't racing it shows them as "Idle" or "Watching Replay"

Is it only this game that does this as I don't remember any other games giving all that info?

dan13l
25-05-2004, 14:51
I thought Links did the same thing, doesn't it tell you what hole they're on and that sort of thing.

JohnMac
25-05-2004, 20:07
Jackknife Ascent: 3:45.528

Unfortunately, on the last easy corner before the end of the stage I crashed, then had to reset my car but I still beat my previous best time. So I think a time below 3:40 is going to be essential to win this round. I think it is even possible that a time closer to 3:30 is possible because my Jackknife Base time still wasn't that good.

the only way to play racing games is bumper/first person view!! behind car sucks big time, no sense of speed!!!! :)

Just had time to do one go (and a pretty rubbish time) before work. I think it would be better to have a couple of days perhaps to do each round as I was out all last night so had no chance of playing. Still it's the taking part that counts :) It would be better if it was like links so you could do the rounds in any order when you wanted rather than having to wait for a new code.

Sadly I think the deadlines were too tight - not everyone managed to compete in yesterdays Round. Deathchef didn't manage any of them :(.

We got tons of people for the next one. May I suggest:

Season for 64, with a password so no worry about all slots filling up:

5 rounds - one for each event, Hill Climb, Rally, Rallycross, Ice Racing, Crossover.

Limited to the first car class in each event.

And the early tracks which everyone will have.

Thoughts?

twicenightly
26-05-2004, 09:24
Can you do all those events individually then?
If so will our rankings for the events like rallycross be based on times, scores or positions?

Perhaps a couple of days per round or something? I found it a bit tight on the last event last night, only having time to pop on and do a few attempts

Didn't know you could have as many as 64 people  That's excellent! Be great if we get that kind of figure playing!

Matt KB
26-05-2004, 10:02
You can do each thing individually or with friends. Obviously with friends will make it ******* hard - I did the first hill climb with Martin and, well, it was difficult with two people. Perhaps have collisions turned off for the next one so a lot of us could all get together to do some of them.

The different modes are: Round Robin - got to meet up, arrange a time for people to race, then it goes knockout. Very hard to organise IMO.

Season - wot we dun.

Team Season - errrr like Season but in teams.

You can indeed have up to 64 people. I'm thinking a week for each event, spanning a total of 5 weeks. Giving everyone plenty of time on it. I'm happy to set it up or someone else can, I really don't mind :D

A week per event sounds like a good idea, then people will all have a chance to have a go.
I would set it up now but I'm not near an Xbox so can't see the best courses so if anyone wants to set it up I'll join too.
