Is anyone else finding the offline game incredibly easy? I did 100% Rookie which was fine, first difficulty it's gonna be easy. Tried Pro - no difference.

Went onto Champion - just done a 4 min rally race - I won by nearly a minute. :|

I thought that might happen too :) I wasn't going to bother with round 3 at first as I got in late last night and was feeling tired, but I thought I should at least get one score registered, even if it was crap - then the competitive bug struck!

Was a good competition but definitely too tight on the deadlines. We should have at least a few days between each round. The next one should be good fun if we get 64 racers, although I definitely prefer individual racing for setting times - you need to concentrate with this game!

It's just your l33t driving skilz mate :D

I've only done about 2/3 of the Pro level so far (mainly to unlock that Jackknife Ascent), but every race has been pretty easy so far... Is there a harder level after Champion? Looks like the RS2 guys have a different definition of difficult compared to the PGR2 crew

Sorry about that guys, that was a bit rubbish of me really.

Will aim to do better next time - serves me right for not looking at the round durations.

I'd be up for one with a longer window to complete the races.

Probably a good idea to run from Friday-Friday? (7 days each)

Thinking the same thing mate, I accidentally started my career on Pro and have easily completed every competition with ease, on my first attempt - except for one stage where I had a monumental crash! I wish you could share replays on-line, it was like something out of Burnout 2.

twicenightly can you pls include the Northwest 2 Rally (britain) that's a great track and looks amazing.

A m8 gave me a link to the film Climb Dance (http://www.softlab.ece.ntua.gr/%7Esivann/pub/Course%20de%20Pikes%20Peak%20%28Ari%20Vatanen%29.mpeg) - 67MB btw This is a award winning video from 1988 of Finland's Ari Vatanen setting the record time for the Pike's Peak Hillclimb in Colorado with a time of 10 minutes, 48.34 seconds. He drove his Peugeot 405 nineteen miles with an average speed of almost 65 mph. So the same car we just used for the XSN. Bits to note are the sheer drop offs, the one handed driving when blinded by the sun and the rear wheel hanging off the edge for one brief second. Top drive

when the season starts and you look at it on the xsn website you'll see it has a 4-digit code (something like XAB5 or similar).

When you go to XSN on the game on the Xbox you put in this code to race.

PGR is still a challenge offline though. The game is very good, but that initial WOW factor seems to be the whole game, there's nothing under it. Online when you have a close game it seems to lag more regularly - with PGR I rarely see any lag even on closest races. Plus it's a more social game - you can chat and race. Can't with Rallisport.

Morton
27-05-2004, 15:43
Agreed, PGR2 is definitely a very social game. It's the best place to make 'friends' as opposed to something like Pandora Tomorrow.

+ Matt, haven't you only been on Xbox Live for a couple of months? It's not like a lot of us who have been playing PGR2 since early November. Saying that though, I'm still not bored with PGR2.

Yeah since February time. Still though PGR2 has had over 120 hours online and I'm still enjoying that, yet something like Rallisport has bored me already. I think it's just set very high standards for all over driving games to match.

120 hrs?! Pah, you've only just started! ;)

I'm very suprised that you're bored with it in less than a week, there are so many tracks!! You can't have raced them all sufficiently yet.

Is it the style of game or the fact you can't talk that's bored you?

I'd say style of game, yet I loved the original. You can't talk in Moto Gp 2 and that's not a prob. Well you can but in the same way as Rallisport.

It's just yeah you have lots of tracks, but there's no challenge in it for me offline. Online I could keep it for, but I like "proper" racing ie with collisions, and you can only have 4, although I appreciate the courses aren't really equiped for this. Elsewise you're playing ghosts which I can do offline really, it's the collision on - ie avoiding other races, taking a better line that makes it for me. I like to race other people as well as their times.

Just think I was perhaps expecting a little more from this. Like I say I do like the game, just online it's not as slick as I'd hoped for or as it is with PGR2, and offline it could be called Rallisport No Challenge 2.

-- And the host can't lock car class? How nuts is that

I got a digital camera today so I'll be able to post my times (hopefully). I don't know much about digital cameras, actually that isn't quite true - I don't know anything. I didn't buy the camera just so I could post pictures in this thread but this thread did remind me that in the original Rallisport Challenge thread at the time of the X-box launch (2002) I posted that I was planning to get one soon.

So for anyone who remembers that thread or wants a challenge here are my best lap times using the Ford Escort Cosworth on North Hill Circuit (Ice Racing). Best lap 31:92. I had to reduce the picture size because the file size was too big.

I'll post my times for Rallisport Challenge 2 later.

One of the things I'm finding bad about XBL is how a game is popular one minute and a ghosttown the next.

I was also wondering why so many seemingly bland games get so much attention here, PGR2, Toca2 and Rallisport2 have all been given enough attention but are any of them special? Do you really want to own 3 driving games? :searchme:

I've nothing against X-box Live but I worry when i read things like "but it is on X-box Live where this game realy shines" etc. I suppose it is human nature to flock to the next big game and abandon the older ones that were raved about. Games that are designed mostly for X-box Live are bound to suffer from this. Fortunately, PGR2, TOCA2 and Rallisport Challenge 2 all have a very good single player game or other offline game modes. In answer to your question I think all three of these games are special (I know I'm repeating myself from an earlier post) but all three of these games have improved from their original counterparts. Yes, 3 racing games on one platform is probably enough which is why I think any future racing game on the X-box will have to be something really special. Of the three I think TOCA 2 is the most underrated. The graphics are much better than before, the variety of racing types has increased, the cut-scenes seem quite natural but the main things are loads of tournaments, cars and a great collection of real world (and made up) courses/circuits to race on. Rallisport challenge 2 (and all rally games I suppose) is all about shaving seconds off your time whilst trying to keep your concentration over the distance.

I've got PGR2 and Rallisport and I think they offer different things when offline in single player.

With PGR2 you can take part in proper racing on courses through streets against a few other cars

When you feel the need for something a bit different there's Rallisport, where you race against the clock and across hills and through snowy fields, etc.

I think they are both great games and will keep them both for certain.

Yes, I want to own 3 driving games. They cover street racing, track racing and rally driving, 3 different styles of racing.

Owning all three I would never describe them as being bland. PGR2 is definitely special, Toca 2 less so and RSC2 is too new to say but so far it's very enjoyable.

JohnMac said it though, any new driving games are going to need to be extra special to get a look in however Burnout 3 and Crash'N'Burn should offer different types of gameplay.

Matt - "ie avoiding other races, taking a better line that makes it for me. I like to race other people as well as their times."

Rallisport as a sport does not offer this, so the game was never going to. The on-line collision game really has to be taken less seriously than say PGR2. It's effort enough to keep the car on the track without worrying where the opposition is.

...Probably need to add more or review what I've written but it's too late now. Time for bed.

Yeah I get that, the first one though I had a lot of close races in split with friends, which we played most. I was expecting the same sort of thing but online. Dunno where it went wrong, I think somewhere along the lines my expectations got a bit clouded with what the games is. Shame.

Northwest 2 latest: 4:06.325 (Cordoba)

That time isn't on my Leaderboard stats screen because when i tried to save the replay (first time I've tried doing this) the X-box froze so I had to reset. The time was saved on the in-game sats/ghost car though. Sadly that time will never appear on my Leaderboard screen so I'll just have to beat it.

I think I can get a time under 4 minutes because that 4:04 time included hitting a tree on the last corner head on, so I had to reverse before heading for the finish. My 4th checkpoint time on that run (which isn't far from the finish) was 3:36.366.

So frustrating! I know I can get down to the early four minutes but I keep making stupid mistakes!! What's everyone's split time for the first section? Mine's 44.340 I think - have had so many problems with that left/right then hard left though....always get wedged on the benches!

From memory my best time at the first checkpoint is about 42.4?? but for my fastest stage time (4:04) it was just under 43 seconds for checkpoint 1.

I drive with the default settings and the only shortcut I take before the first checkpoint is the last turn where it says "don't cut" I go between the house and the lamppost.

Just been practising offline, managed a 43.87 or something like that for the first checkpoint, and a 4:03:?? in total. This course has lots of tricky sections where sometimes I can fly through, others I just impale myself onto a signpost or fall off the road and go bouncing off hills!

What impresses me about this game is the feeling of the different road surfaces. You can easily tell the difference between gravel and tarmac, from the road noise to the controller vibrations. Race Driver 2 doesn't have the constant controller rumbling and I do think it makes a big difference, especially when it's done as well as RC2.

Well done M@rtin. I think I've reached the point where I'm not going to get a brilliant time on this stage during this round of the competition. The funny thing is I know I can get somewhere close to 3:55 but I keep making stuipid mistakes when I know I've had a good start. My best first checkpoint time is something like 41.8.

Uridium
31-05-2004, 10:12
Just had my best run yet and got a 4:06 which I'm pretty chuffed with. Like JohnMac says, I know I can do better but it's the consistency over four l-o-n-g minutes which is the problem. Also that very last hairpin left does my nerves no good at all!!!

Here are a few pictures (not that well taken I'm affraid) that show how things can start out well and completely fall apart.

This first picture (http://www.john-mac.com/rallisport_challenge2/gb_northwest2_cordoba.JPG) is just to show I was using the Cordoba when I got the course time in all the other photos.

checkpoint 1 - 41.783 (http://www.john-mac.com/rallisport_challenge2/gb_northwest2_cordoba1.JPG)
checkpoint 2 - 1:12.100 (http://www.john-mac.com/rallisport_challenge2/gb_northwest2_cordoba2.JPG)
checkpoint 3 - 2:19.650 (http://www.john-mac.com/rallisport_challenge2/gb_northwest2_cordoba3.JPG)

Edit: I didn't use the default car setup for this one but I don't think it affected my time all that much because I've got 41.8 with the default settings. The change I made was to Basic Tuning, moving gear ratio one notch towards short.

Nooooooooooooooooo!!!

I stopped at midnight our time as I thought that was it and I'd done enough.

How annoying! On my last run I was 3 secs up at the 3rd check point but had a wobbly 4th sector and only scored the 3:57.130. So a sub 3:55 is definitely possible.

Ah well. Nice one r1skbreak3r. GoldDude, 0.064!!! You can't get much closer than that.

What were both your split times? From memory mine were roughly;

1st - 0:44.80
2nd - 1:14.50
3rd - 2:20.00
4th - 3:30.00

Wouldn't it be great it you could have a replay which over laps with someone else, like they do on the TV coverage. Showing exactly where you lose and make up the ground.

It's a bit strange that the XSN times only count on your Local scoreboard and not the Live ones. :searchme:

M@rtin
04-06-2004, 12:48
I reckon I could've maybe knocked a couple more seconds off my time but it would have to be a 100% perfect race... My split times were roughly:

1: 43:2
2. 1:12:5
3. 2:18.4
4. 3:28:2

I have got low 42's for the 1st before, but the other three were the best I've had.

Anyone know how the top speed stat is calculated? I've had 137 for a couple of seconds, and a brief 138 but it never seemed to register... maybe you have to maintain it for a certain length of time? :searchme:

If it is a Rally like Northwest 2 you can pick from the first 4 rally cars (the first available class). Similar with other race types: the first four Hillclimb cars for Hillclimb. That's why you can easily beat the best time in the previous round in Pro career for Northwest 2 using a more powerful car. Although you'll often find that having a better car means you need to change your driving and even learn the car's limits for that course.

You only get the co-driver during the Rally stages and there are even advanced pace notes you can enable but they take some getting used to. It can be distracting trying to keep one eye on the road and one on the map in something like hillclimb, especially at night.

I'm near the end of the Pro career but in a couple of rounds I'm finishing 2nd or 3rd.

Deffo keeping mine.

Like most people I breezed through Amateur (Liggur : I think you are missing the chance to unlock some cars if you miss Amateur...not 100% sure though) and pretty much the same on Pro.Next level is more of a challenge though and while I have only tried a few different modes on Live so far,I have had great fun with it

I don't think you miss any unlockables which ever level you start at. Lots of people start straight at pro. You may unlock some things slightly quicker by doing amatuer.

I'll definitely be keeping Rallisport Challenge 2, the question is whether I really need to keep hold of the original Rallisport Challenge. I suppose the main reason I've kept it after Rallisport Challenge 2 was released was just because I know some of the stages really well and I have some great times/points on them - still a great game. I haven't started Champion Career yet on Rallisport Challenge 2 but as I don't have X-box Live I'm not in a rush to complete the game. But I got Galleon, Red Dead Revolver and Thief: Deadly Shadows on Friday so RC2 is having a well deserved rest.

GAME don't do the 10-day returns anymore.

Told that in no uncertain terms when I got my PGR2 LIVE pack.

That's incorrect.

Game WON'T do a 10 day return on: Consoles, PC Games, DVDs, Xbox Live subs or peripherals.

PGR2 is so much better than rallisport 2 i cant describe it in words. ime currently just going through the motions of completing this and it seems almoast a chore instead of fun :( maybe ive just played too many rally games and am becoming bored of them? easy way to find out is by booting up in win 98 and giving cmr2 on the pc with the ff wheel a blast (but dont have the weel here :| ) thinking about it, getting all silvers on pgr2 was a bit boring. sorry ill shut up now (well after saying that rallisport isnt a bad game its just not as good as pgr)

OT:

I'm getting a little bit annoyed by the AI of the Computer drivers on PGR2. They seemed to have been programmed precisely the same way as the ones in Ferrari F355 Challenge - they bump you off the track all the time, but don't lose any speed or time themselves if they crash.

Certainly the American Muscle car class was a complete chore for me.

Bump - last week of the challenge. Most of you entered got a DNF in the last couple. Good for me as I am now 5th overall  But it would be good to finish it off properly :)

Edit. PS. It took me a while to find the thread again with searching disabled !

I agree, how hard can it be for them to regionalise the competitions so that it actually finishes on the right day in your time zone.?

it would be much better to have a one race challenge, like links golf, stop us all using the quit button after an awful lap :)

Final bump with a day or so to go. Only 4 of out of 17 have done the last race so far. It's actually a really good hill climb. The twilight time of day makes it one of the most photo realistic courses so well worth a punt. It's also 6 mins plus so requires a fair degree of concentration for a longish period - bit like "The Ring" on PGR2 in that respect.

The patch is finally out on Monday, scoreboards will be reset too. Check over on the xblracing.com site headlines for more details.

Finally, we'll have clean scoreboards. :)

Woo hoo!!! The patch is out, and look what I got!! Silver paint job for being in the top 25 for this track, I think I was 14th.

The patch solved the glitching as well as improving collision detection and you can now talk to all the people in the race instead of just the people in front and behind.

So theres a huge leap between Rallisport Challenge and Rallisport Challenge 2?

or is it mainly Xbox live? Which is obviously a big difference.. I don't have it though myself..
