I'm happy to confirm that the Criterion RoboCop, but only the Criterion RoboCop, is not region-coded.
Good luck finding a copy, though...
so even though it says that it is region 1. It is infact R0. i need this confirmed as I cant return it if it is R1. And I can t play it..
Thanks M8

Definitely Region 0 - where does it say it's R1?

Amazon.com:)
Amazon (as good a company as they are) are hopeless when it comes to details like this - they list all of the Criterion & Anchor Bay releases as R1, yet a vast amount are not regionally coded.
You can buy Robocop with confidence though :)

However, it is NTSC so although its R0 it wont play if your dvd player cant play NTSC (R1).
EDIT: Just looked at the box and although it doesn't say NTSC (at least not in clear view) it is as I cant play PAL encoded software.
HHmmmm
I have a Sony 735. not chipped or anything like that.
Dammit I dunno..
If I get it chipped I know it plays NTSC then. And I know TV will take it.
I have a PRON DVD which is region 0. would that be NTSC.
anyone know if it does NTSC

Not sure mate.
There is R0 PAL and R0 NTSC. If you cant play any NTSC software its not gonna work :(
Shiri is R0 NTSC also.
My friend has the up in smoke tour on R0 PAL and I cant play that :(
I think I know someone who has a copy.
I'll borrow it and try it.
Thanks for advice Silver

OK, just to clarify:
The region code and the video system are two entirely separate issues. R1 discs are almost invariably NTSC, because Region 1 purely covers NTSC-using countries (the US and Canada), but R2 discs can be PAL (Europe) or NTSC (Japan), and the same is true of other regions. But it would be perfectly possible to produce a R1 PAL disc - just a little pointless, as no-one would buy it!
As for non-region-coded discs, the only clue as to what video system they feature is the nationality of the distributor. In the case of RoboCop, it's on the Criterion label, so it's obviously NTSC. Most Criterion discs aren't region-coded, though it's important to bear in mind that there are exceptions - but I'm happy to confirm that RoboCop isn't one of them.
Incidentally, going from negative reviews of the new MGM disc, it seems as though the Criterion offers the best picture as well as the best overall package.

All Sony players will output NTSC as NTSC (no pseudo PAL option), so if you say your TV plays NTSC you'll be fine.
