Are you sure that's what it is?

The "Coming Soon" films seem to be things that are due to be released soonish, Firefly is going to be a few years away I would expect.

Although, a search on IMDB doesn't reveal any other films called Serenity, so maybe it is.

edit: Your update proved you right then

I was also (and still am to a certain extent) suspicious of all the excitement surrounding the word "Serenity". However, a search on Google News turned this up:

http://comingsoon.net/news.php?id=3609

which adds a few further bits of information, suggesting that the "Coming Soon" bit on the Universal site does indeed refer to a Firefly movie.

Given that it's got King Kong as "coming soon" as well, that theory doesn't really stand. :)

If you listen to the audio soundtrack of the episode 'out of gas' on the R1 DVD, one of the commentators hints at possible story thread when he talks about them saving a storyline for "possibly another format" which I take to mean film.

They mention this when...
...they are talking about the origins of Inara - why she's off flying about the outer rim when she could be safe on the core planets. Is she running from something

although further info on the firefly sites suggest that the original scipt has been shelved for another idea - so I think we're none the wiser

according to

CHICAGO (thefutoncritic.com) -- Universal Pictures has greenlighted "Serenity," a feature film based on the short-lived FOX series "Firefly." The studio snagged the feature rights to "Firefly" from 20th Century Fox Television back in September (read the story).

Production on the project, budgeted in the mid-eight figures, is set to begin in June for a 2005 release date. Joss Whedon, the show's creator and executive producer, is on board to write and direct the project, which will see all nine original cast members - Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, Ron Glass and Alan Tudyk - reprising their roles.

Whedon told Daily Variety the title shift is designed to give the franchise some distance from the TV version. "It was important that people understand that the movie isn't the series," he said. "The movie is bigger, more epic than anything you can do in a series." He also added he went out of his way to make sure the script was accessible to audiences who never tuned into "Firefly." "You're not going to bring people into a movie if you're explaining all the time what happened before," Whedon added.

Details about "Serenity" weren't released however Whedon specified the feature is set about six months after the TV show left off.

Superb news!

Fingers-crossed it's a big sucess which will lead to further movies or another tv-show.

I wonder how many of the unanswered plot-threads he will address in the movie?

....Oh & what rating will he aim for? ..... Maybe an R-rating which would allow the GOOOOORGEOUS Morena Baccarin (Inara) to show off her prostitution skills :norty:

I just hope this doesn't mean it'll lose any of it's original spark - I'd hate to see it dumbed down too much
:nono:

I smiled at the casual reference to 'mid eight figures' in the above quote. A different way of putting it I suppose.

As for the rating - I'd guess at a 12a when it's finally done.

Wonder if Jayne still has his hat.. :D

"The man they call Jayyyyne!"

This is superb news! I hope it's the springboard for a new series.

When firefly was first shown I caught a couple of episodes and quite liked it, then I got the DVD box set :notworthy . By the time I finished watching all the episodes I was cursing Fox for cancelling it.

I've not watched anything that had so many laughs, tears, excitement, thrills, scares and such fine acting in one TV show in years.

Jayne's one of my favourite characters. Along with his sidekick 'vera'.

Classic quote from 'Heart of gold'

ZOE: No-one's forcing you to go.
JAYNE: Good, 'cos I don't know these folks. Don't much care to, either.
MAL: They're whores.
JAYNE (instantly): I'm in.

Agreed, Jayne gets the best lines. I also likes the shot of Jayne peering into the infirmary in the pilot episode (can't remeber part 1 or 2) - quite moving.

Nashie - if you've a multi region DVD then get off to dvdsoon now! (http://www.dvdsoon.com/show-title-details.xml?uid=100721) 31% off atm

Just don't get stung by customs as I did - £8.00 for a £21 dvd set - and £4.00 of that was the extortionate Royal Main admin charge.

Jayne rocks!

Although River is the better shot.

But having to wait until 2005 to find out what the guys in the blue marigolds are up to is annoying.

I have to agree - this show was outstanding, TVTome had some bad reviews on this but they seem mainly due to the shows being broadcast out of order in the US which caused some confusion.

Yeah but Alan Tudyk chracter was always my favorite. He also had the best lines and was the most likable.

Haven't seen any of Firefly but will certainly be getting the boxset -- anything touched by the hand of Whedon is worth watching IMHO (with the possible exception of Alien Resurrection...)

The R2 is probably a safer bet though; out next month and £27 from Play (although obviously not for those who hate NTSC>PAL conversions...)

I hope the UK box set has the same excellent packaging as the US one - four skinny DVD cases in a sturdy cardboard slipcase. Takes up about 1/3 the space of other equivalent box sets, and much nicer than a horrible fold-out digipak.
