Ok, wondered if someone might help me. I'm looking to import something from the States at the price of $1200, the shipping cost will be $370. I know I'll need to pay VAT, but do I pay it on the value of goods only, or goods and shipping costs? and are there other charges I need to take into consideration.

I appreciate your help.

You pay on shipping cost as well.

If item cost is under threshold then p&p isn't counted, but if it is over then you are charged on item cost and p&p cost.

Look here (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=259962) for some help.

I know that is for DVDs but the information will give you a good idea of what to expect.

Total Value of package= $1570USD (inc shipping)
Value in Sterling= £857.92 (@ XR 1.83)

VAT @ 17.5% = £150.14
Duty @ 3.5% = £30.03

You may also have to pay the courier a nominal customs deferrment charge.

Hope this helps.

That shipping cost is  Whatever it is, paying one third again in shipping seems excessive.
