Is it just me or does anyone else out there find Requiem for a Dream to be a really BAD piece of film making????????????

I wouldn't necessarily call it bad as Darren Aronofsky's reasoning behind filming it the way he did is sound (watch the extras on the DVD for the explanation) but I did find the film unengaging and had no sympathy for any of the characters. Redeemed as it was by a semi-naked Jennifer Connelly I couldn't figure out why her character had to resort to prostitution and couldn't go and work in a shop or something. As for Jared Leto, well, he was very weak IMHO. The only actor that came out of it really well was Ellen Burstyn but as my girlfriend (who is an actress) argued it is not that difficult to play a mad person.

I did find all the camera tricks wearing after awhile especially the repetitive use of hip-hop style cuts for the drug taking.

Not one I would watch again in a hurry even with the excellent time lapse shot of Ellen Burstyn cleaning the apartment.

I really liked it, it's just a gripping style fest. I don't care about what it means or what it's saying about drugs or how accurate or deep it was, and acting isn't something I really understand anyway.

ROFLMAO :D You watched the film you said? (I'm teasing btw...)

In a nutshell, Marion had to do what she did because the drugs supply stopped and the only man with drugs left was Big Tim. Big Tim would not sell the drugs though, he would only exchange them for "pussy" as Tyrone puts it. Therefore the Cold Turkey Marion resorts to performing for Big Tim so she can feed her addiction.

To answer the original question: I've very much liked Requiem For A Dream. Would definitely appear in my Top 10.

I agree, I thought it was amazing. Completely engaging even without sympathetic characters, which is a pretty neat trick. I thought it was stylistically astounding. Can't wait to see if he gets Batman.

I found the characters very sympathetic. Bursteyn's descent into addiction hell is not only tragic but also totally realistic, I speak from personal experience.
