View Full Version : Lord of the rings collectors editions - how much are they worth?

I've just seen on ebay and other places the collectors edition of FOTR (with bookends) going for a lot of money, some with a buy it now price of £85  Are they really worth that much? Will the Two Towers one and (eventual) ROTK ones be worth a lot aswell? I'm just thinking that maybe I should try and pick one up (FOTR is OOP now though isn't it?) as a future investment!
Would they devalue a lot if they had been watched/were unsealed?

cheers

yes! they only produce a certain amount. R2 FOTR you cannot buy in the shops anymore hence the high price :(

But they were selling them off for next to nothing in HMV and places, and they had loads of em. Why would anyone who wants one not have bought it then?

A Two Towers set without the poly stuff inside all cut up will probably be worth a bit ;)

ROTK box set is virtually unavailable to order now three and a half months before it’s even released! Allocation must have been ultra-strict. Was still buyable at Play yesterday but not anymore. Looks like some peeps will have to pay B&M prices for this puppy come Xmas time. That or order up the R1.

They're welcome to them: overpriced, meretricious guff... the golem statue was like something advertised in a Sunday supplement ("beautifully hand crafted..."

The bookends... woof!

It hasn't even been announced properly yet so I doubt they would have sold out. The ordinary extended version hasn't even been put up for order yet at Amazon, so I wouldn't worry
;)

Check around - All the sites have it as unavailable to order where previously it was not.

But high street stores weren't even taking orders for it. I don't see why New Line would change it's release strategy and make it online only.

I bought my FOTR for an ungodly £47 off ebay, and I can't see them falling in the near future (next few years) really. I've already got TTT (for £25 in music zone sale). It's now £17.97 at music zone, and that's the cheapest I've seen it. I'm seriously considering buying another one for future sale/ trade.

Never said that - I said that anyone who missed out ordering on-line would have to get it in a store or from the States. Unusual to see something like this sell out on-line so far ahead of release. Can’t believe that EIV wouldn’t just order up another 50k to meet demand as they’re not a company against making a bob or two. Maybe that’s what’ll happen.

hmmm i never bothered picking up TTT box, maybe i should keep an eye out, they were flogging them for £25 in my local woolies a month or so back, wonder if they've still got any.
that said, i'd sell mt FOTR box in a heartbeat for £85 :p it is just the box that's OOP not the extended set right?

There's no way the ROTK set has sold out online already. They're not that
limited.

You could get the last two sets online right up to release date and well beyond.

In R2 EIV might have withdrawn the set because they want to make changes to the spec or product codes. Play have it down as 'unavailable' and not 'sold out'. They always put 'sold out' if it has actually sold out. There are still a couple of sites taking orders though, but it's far too early for many to even list it.

If you go for the R1s, all three sets are available online in many places.

Just do a search at *********************, there are plenty about and at regular prices so no need to pay inflated ebay prices.

For a start DVDSoon have them all including pre-order for the ROTK set. PlayUSA have them all also, and have both the FOTR and TTT sets in stock ready to ship in 24 hours.

30????? Jesus....They have been on the market for nearly 2 years, they are not that rare. Something like this, this thread probably makes more hype than they have ever had. I see people losing money eventually, after this year, we got the Trilogy super set with Busts, Book, HD picture etc. Anything else will be obsolete.

I saw several of both sets in stores in the US last week at normal and indeed below retail prices. Bizarre.

If things were that simple, we'd all have been enjoying Duke Nukem Forever and Half Life 2 a long time ago!

On-line retailers who had ROTK EE on their websites were taking a guess at the Dealer price, as EIV have not announced the release as yet.

I assume they have taken them down as their pricing may be wide of the mark.

jonathan.e

RRP will be the same as the other 2 sets - £49.99.

You may well say that, yet the 2-Disc FOTR and TTT by EiV were RRP £24.99 and yet the 2-Disc ROTK was RRP £26.99... So they may "bump" the EE up as they know people will flock to buy it (well not me as im going R1 for UNCUT Extras (FOTR:EE), plus Easter Eggs (FOTR:EE+TTT:EE), plus nicer packaging...)

Nimak mentioned the Salo DVD as being worth £150 due to it being rare. You can find it at HMV for £19.99 so anyone paying £150 for it is stupid.

Retailers need to know the dealer price in order to set their own retail price. ROTK (2 Disc) dealer price was higher than the previous 2 releases, may be the same case with the EE.

I bet you can't find the Criterion release in HMV, which is what they are willing to pay stupid amounts of money for...

The Criterion cut of Salo omits a 25 second section during the first weding ceremony where one of the masters quotes a poem. this is restored on the R2 DVD. So the R2 DVD is the uncut version of the film. What is the point of paying £150 for the Criterion dvd?

James45

because it's limited, OOP and ultra rare and the R2 is widely available... have you missed the entire point of this thread?

The existing R2 Salo is the full uncut version while the Criterion is cut by 25 seconds, other than that they are the same film. Some people are too stupid for words.
