Just saw this for the first time last night, and was mightily impressed. Now, where is the best place to get it on DVD from? Tartan would seem the easiest, but if there's a better version in France....hmmmm, anyone able to help me?

I thoroughly recommend the R2 French release, which you can get from most French sites for under £15 delivered.

Try Amazon.fr (http://www.amazon.fr/) or Cinestore.fr (http://www.cinestore.fr)

The picture is anamorphic and pretty much flawless while the French 5.1 soundtrack is particularly good. The English subtitles are easy to read and not burnt on like the Tartan release.

The menus can be viewed in English and the extras are good alhough you do require a reasonable understanding of French for some of them.

AFAIK the best version available in any region.

POSSIBLE SPOILER!!!
Whilst on the subject of La Haine could someone explain how the scene with a certain famous tower was filmed? Did Kassovitz use special effects or where the lights meant to go out at that specific time?

cheers,

If you look at the outtakes/deleted scenes you'll hear them commenting on the time and that it should be going off any minute and it was done in real time. Not much money for special effects on that film anyway!
The scene with the camera floating out the window in the cité was just a camera attached to a flying helicopter!
