View Full Version : What is your Favourite Robin Hood Movie?
 Hello Toxophily Fans,
I am a toxoliphilite (archer). I have been practicing Archery for 15 Years and I have been teaching archery for about 12 Years, I'm a qualified instructor, But ever since I firt mentioned I was involved with Archery I get questioned about Robin Hood!
I don't shoot Long bow in fact I consider them a bit of a joke. ;)
But I have to admit ever since I was a Boy I loved Robin Hood tales. In fact this week I bought Robin Hood Prince of Thieves Special Edition AND The Adventures of Robin Hood. So I was wondering;
What was your Favourite Robin Hood Movie? :searchme:
I know Robin Hood has been done on TV but I've always considered the movies better.
My favourite is The Adventuresof Robin Hood (1938). The story is fun, entertaining, adventurous, romantic and dramatic.
The Casting is first class with Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland as the perfect Robin Hood and Maid Marion. The rest of the cast especially Basil Rathbone and Claude Rains are also perfect.
Special Mention should go to Alan Hale who portrayed Little John in no one but THREE Robin Hood Films (1933, 1938 & 1950).
The Music is Fantastic, perfectly matching the moods of the characters and a story in it's self. (composer on Nazi hit list left to do film days before Hitler took control of his native Austria).
All in all a Fantastic film.
What do you think?

I second that! The fox that played Robin Hood did a better job then Kevin Costner did.......
Another vote for the Disney cartoon version. Maid Marion has never been foxier ... :help:

I enjoyed both Prince Of Thieves and Patrick Bergin's Robin Hood. I'm not sure why Kevin Costner was ridiculed because of his accent, as Errol Flynn's Tazmainian accent was just as bad.
The Adventures Of Robin Hood was a very good film but not as outstanding as it's made out to be (IMHO). For me it was Basil Rathbone who made this movie as enjoyable and stole Flynn's thunder. The same thing happened of course with Prince Of Thieves, I guess the bad guy role is more interesting.
I hope Fox release the Patrick Bergin film soon as my old laser disc is only in 4:3.

Yeah, the Disney one is fun. It's story structure is a bit on the weak side, though. It's more a series of set-pieces than a real story.

Robin and Marian is probably my favourite Robin Hood film, however, my favourite RH in all formats would be Robin of Sherwood (in particular the first 2 seasons with Michael Praed as Robin).

Of course it is (and just what is a 'Tasmanian accent'?), but I've never seen this version (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=9283#Robin)...but I will ;)

Hi John
Maybe I should have qualified my comments. What I ment was that Kevin Costner is more often than not pulled up about his accent in Prince Of Thieves. Critics have said that he should have tried to put on an English accent whilst ignoring the fact that Errol Flynn never tried using an English accent in The Adventures Of Robin Hood.
What I ment by my comment was that the lack of an authentic from either actor didn't spoil my enjoyment. So I don't see why Costner should come in for the flack that he did regarding this movie.
 Hi,
I never consider the accent unless it is totaly out of place. :nono:
I was not considering the Disney Film. I guess I was only thinking about live action, but animated is OK if that's your favourite well so be it.
of course almost every Robin Hood movie has parts nit pickers can use, but if it works why fix it?
Bye!

But that was my point; Flynn worked hard to iron out any trace of an accent, and IMHO he succeeded. It might not be English but you can't pinpoint it to anywhere; and in any case, what is an English accent? Any attempt to replicate 12th Century English would render any dialogue unintelligable; Boorman gave his Arthur a Cornish (but which part of Cornwall ;) ) accent. Worked for me. What should Robin's be? East Midlands, East Sussex?
I think what takes most viewers out of the moment is the sound of an accent which is patently not British (and I say that because I enjoyed Connery in the role) in the story of a great English legend that is Robin Hood.
Could David Niven have played Wyatt Earp with any degree of reality? Having said that I quite enjoy the hokum that is Dodge City, Flynn in a cowboy hat, indeterminate accent and all.
Some weeks ago, I read that the argument had flared up again as to where Robin Hood did actually come from with Yorkshire claiming him as his own (arguing - with some justification - would he seriously have decamped to within an arms length of his enemy the Sheriff of Nottingham).
Now Barry Rutter's Northern Broadsides could follow up their dialect version of Richard III with the Legend of Robin Hood: "Nae then me owd fettler; move thi sell off'n yon trunk o' wood afore ah knock thi off!"
I'd pay good money to see that.

So many films, so little time...
Coming in to this a bit late, but I'm predictably going to state that I think the best of them all is "The Adventures Of Robin Hood" from 1939. Glorious technicolor, Claude and Basil, Errol Flynn at his most graceful, Olivia De Havilland in a wimple.
Having said that, I have a lot of time for Richard Lester's "Robin And Marian". I don't like the script much but Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn have seriously steamy chemistry and Robert Shaw is an interestingly messed-up in the head Sherrif of Nottingham. Fabulous score by John Barry too.
As for Mr Costner, his Robin Hood is mildly diverting at best. Personally, I liked Alan Rickman's bits and none of the rest of it, but he seems to be acting in a different, more entertaining movie. It's not a performance, it's a pantomime turn and very amusing on that level but I don't think it belongs in the film and it fatally unbalances it.
Has there ever been a porno version?:o

Can't belive no one has mentioned "Robin Hood: Men in Tights"
Mel Brooks at his best, with characters such as "The Sherrif of Rottingham", "Will Scarlet O'Hara", "Latrine", "Blinkin the blind servent" and the Moors "Asneeze" and his son "Ahchoo".
The scene with Blinkin are brilliant, espcially when hes "reading" a brail verson of playboy and when he's in a perch looking out for strangers.
PS Cary Elwes, the only ENGLISH actor to play Robin Hood.
